There's been a lot of negative publicity about stores selling cigs to underage folks. It's quite possible that the clerk had
been instructed to be more stringent in making sure that anyone who bought cigarettes was old enough to be buying them
legally.

Was this an in-state ID or an out-of-state ID? If it was in-state he *should* have known better.

Was this an employee who waited on you, or the owner? It does sound like he was kind of rude, complain to the store
management.

hi everyone,
well, this is not so serious of an affront, but i really had a bad day,
the kind where you can almost predict what is going wrong. anyway, i
stop by this small grocery store, actually thinking, let's see i need
milk and cigarettes, now i hope i don't fuck this up. anyway, i go up
to the counter and ask for cigarettes, and this idiot cards me. it
took me a few seconds to recover since, being 23, i feel it's quite
unexpected and especially since i've only been a few times...when i was
18, five years ago. not only that, i've been to this freaking store
so many times, so they should have recognized me. anyway, visibly
annoyed, i pull out my damn cards, and among the cards i have, two amex
cards, work id, several credit cards, bank cards, health insurance
card, triple AAA card, college id with picture (still keep it though i
graduated last year), and finally the stupid freaking driver's license.
now, i don't know any high school idiot who carries that many cards
around, but anyway i show him the license after i made sure he saw all
my other freaking cards. problem is, or his problem actually, there's
no picture on the driver's license. that's because in that state, you
don't need a picture license unless it's your first license and y ou're
under 21. shit, the idiot didn't even look at it. he goes, "i need a
picture id." "well, i don't have one. i'm 23 years old." person
behind me says sarcastically "i didn't know you needed a picture id to
buy milk." anyway, this bub goes "can't sell you the cigarettes." at
this point, i'm in utter amazement. and before i decide to walk out
the damn store, i didn't realize that i had already put down the money
on the counter, and this idiot takes it and charges me for the milk.
i'm pissed as hell, so bad that i walk out because i wanted to take the
milk and slam in on the fucking floor, but that sort of revenge isn't
as sweet. anyway, my license was a valid license, and i was wondering
if i had any legal avenue. he didn't even look at the license. also,
what are some of the seedier things that can be done to this store? i
mean, it's not a chain like the way 7-11 is; it's a small private run
store. but it's like 7-11 in what it sells.
thanks for the info,

Had many of those myself! Damn it's a bitch when that happens!
anyway, i
<snip story>
I do some part-time bartending. I got pressed into service one day
when my favorite bartender at my favorite bar got sick - and hell, it
is more fun to leave a bar with more money than you came in with so I
still do it occasionally. I am very strict about ID's. This is
liquor primarily, and it is a older crowd so I very rarely have to
card anyone - but if the ID (even for cigarettes) doesn't satisfy me -
I don't serve. Period. No discussion allowed.
Now while this guy certainly seems to have gone overboard (from your
description of the contents of your wallet - I myself certainly would
have sold you the smokes - you have to be 18 to get a credit card at
the very least!) you have to keep in mind that in states like Ohio,
where they are really enforcing tobacco sales to minors, enforcement
agents are out in force and that clerk is the one who gets arrested
and fined if he sells to a minor. Now he probably only makes $6.00 an
hour or so, and a $500.00 fine is a good chunk of change! And he
doesn't get any tips to boot!
While I have gainful employment other than my occasional stints as a
bartender - I can't allow myself to be arrested for any reason and so
I am very strict on the ID's. I don't care how old you are, if I ask
to see it and you can't produce it - or produce one that I am not
happy with - you don't get served, and I don't entertain any
arguments. It is my decision who to serve, and whom to refuse.
I am only asking you to look at it from the clerks point of view. I
think he was wrong too, but he erred on the side of caution. If you
think revenge is justified, then follow the other suggestion on going
to Paal's home page and look up the 7-11 revenge section.

Hi Astro! That sounds like fun! (I wish I lived in your neighborhood, I'd
have fun helping you pull this off)
Do this. Buy a few cans of nasty canned stuff. I recommend sardines or
sauerkruat or whatever else might stink like hell.
Wait a few weeks, open whatever you bought and put it in zip lock bags.
If you're feeling really adventurous, take a shit in a zip lock bag.
Carry them into the store. Pretend to be shopping - you know, pick up
things off the shelf, pretend to read the labels, etc. All the while you
are placing your smelly goodies (open and spilled of course) way in the
back of several shelves.
Place them so far back that they won't be seen. Make sure you place in
the non-perishable areas, like where the paper towels, canned goods, etc
are. The way those mom and pop stores are, lots of time goes by between
shelf restocking. In a few days, the whole store will stink like hell!
Of course, after this, you may want to find a better place to shop ;-)

As I understand your laws, one has to show an ID when one buy stuff like
Alcohol and Cigarettes/Tobaco [don't kid yourself it is the same here] - now
it sounds to me like this kido is either a total "newbie" or someone who has
been put under pressure [like, if he'd earlier sold smoke to kids and the cops
had been brought in and bla.bla.bla] - so, unless it was real obvious that you
was exceptionally treated bad, I don't think you have a case. And I don't
think that would be the case unless the cashier held a grudge, or the things
mentioned above.

Actually this is more a problem of media hype and gov't harassment
of small business owners. The government's War on Drugs is finally
catching up to tobacco and many merchants are running scared. My
local drug store tried to impliment a no-ID no tobacco policy, but
finally caved in to reality when customers started to bitch about
long delays while people like you dig for your ID or argue with
the clerks.
The problem is that in treating tobacco now more like alcohol but
the clerk and the owner can face criminal charges for sell
tobacco to minors, and in California the state gov't has been
running an ad campaign that makes it seem that it is illegal
not to ask for ID.
My advice is get used to it, smokers are now second class citizens.
I don't smoke, but I support everyones right to alter their own
body chemistry.

Here is one that is not on the list:
Call the US Dept. of Agriculture Office of Inspector General,
at 1-800-424-9121 and report any violation of food stamp
regulations you noticed such as:
1) People buying liquor with them.
2) Tobacco
3) Being charged sales tax on soda paid for with food stamps.
4) Customers buying a candy bar with a $10.00 food stamp and
getting change in US Currency.
