Could someone please explain the difference between a church and a cathedral.
What are the differences to look for on the exterior of the building?

That's actually quite an easy one: there are no external differences; a
cathedral could be any church as long as it is the seat of a bishopric of
archbishopric. Church is like a box of chocalates: it's not the packaging which
makes it important, it's the filling.
