Almost all of the supposed magickal lore that's presented on this
group and others of a similar nature is a modern synthesis of
true magical lore and the physical science paradigm.

Magick as a kind of technology, often requiring physical objects
and processes to manifest itself. It became something apart from
nature and the self, a tool to be utilized like a hammer or a
loom. Manipulation became the purpose of magick, of people and
things.

The rest of the 'magical lore' you'll come across involves appealing
to one supposed 'supernatural being' or another to do magick for you,
which is just Christianity (etc.) in new-age clothing.

Originally, people knew that magick was the way the universe
worked, that they and the rest of creation _were_ magickal.

What is the _real_ first step towards learning magick?

People who lived in the distant past didn't have anything we
don't have, and the ones who knew magick found it where we can
find it: Within.

The key that opens the door to magick is basic meditation.
Described in a thousand books and a thousand websites. Here's
one approach:

The obect is to gradually become acquainted with what could be
called your magickal self. Your inner self. The part of you that
creates your physical life. Your beliefs/spells, maintained
in your conscious mind, direct these inner, multi-dimensional
processes, but they are not the processes.

In a place where you are comfortable, with no distractions, sit
or lie down and close your eyes. Look within and free yourself
from ideas/concepts/thoughts. Try to sense the endless river of
creative power within you. It is like a deep musical chord.

This river is composed of the incredible energies of your being
made phsyical.

Don't try to stop your mind from thinking, turn your attention
away from it and look within.

Do it as long as you feel comfortable, short sessions at first,
but don't time them. Be patient. Concentrate. You are not your
beliefs, you are the being that _has_ those beliefs.

If necessary, simple warmup exercises, mild calisthenics, and/or
breathing exercises and the mental chanting of a simple mantra
like "I AM" can be used to rid yourself of bodily and mental
tensions and distractions. These would be preparatory exercises.

Just keep it up. You will guided to the next stage by your own
inner knowing.

Don't get hung up on words. The above could be stated a thousand
different ways with different words for all the key concepts.

Apparently, learning to spell is preceded by staring at one's naval until
the voices in ["sid's"] head start mumbling vague things to post on usenet.

Aaand you're wrong again.

It'd be just the bee's knees if you actually tried to know what the
fsck you're talking about.

But that would sort of put a wrench in your plan, wouldn't it?

Then, according to you no student of magick until modern times ever had a
teacher?

Sidney. The subject says steps, not step. What are the other ones?
The basic meditation exercises are going good but I need more!

Okay Jack. Thanks. I've been lazy for sure. Stand by another
version of first steps.

This is a poor excuse for shilling.

The basic shill exercises are not going so well, more are needed to progress
to the next step of "sid's" trolling.

----------------------------------------------------------------

The other first step involves getting to know your dreaming
self. The dream universe is as real as this one, the laws
are simply different. When you are awake in this universe
you are asleep in the dream universe. When you are awake
in the dream universe you are asleep in this one (although
a lot more goes on when you are asleep in this universe than
adventures in the dream universe).

Get paper and pen and put them beside your bed. First thing
when you wake up, make notes about your recalled dreaming
experiences. This is your dream journal.

Give yourself suggestions just before you sleep that the
first thing you will do upon coming awake in the dream
universe is take similar notes about your previous experiences
in the waking world in your wake journal.

Align your bed so that your head is to the north. Sleep twice
a day, 4-6 hours in the darkness and a short nap in the
afternoon, when it's light.

This alteration of sleeping habits is critical to the magician,
because it serves to re-unite the inner and outer selves. Long
periods in either reality makes them strangers to each other.

Weren't you two exchanging addys so you didn't have to expose your
treasures to profane eyes? Whenever you get around to that part, that
is. As you said yourself, all this stuff is "described in a thousand
books and a thousand websites." *yawn*

Lambchops has apparently realized that he can continue to troll arw while
also getting 'Jill' to shill for his trolling, and also appearing to have
the same 'lurker supporting him in e-mail'.
