A good friend sent me a copy of BBC's "The Making of Me: John Barrowman"

John Barrowman plays Captain Jack Harkness in Torchwood, but is also a stage
actor and singer.

And he's gay.

The doco follows John's journey to discover *why* he is gay. He undergoes
DNA tests, brain scans, phsysiological and psychological tests, goes back
and talks to his family about his early childhood. He talked to other gay
people about hteir memories and experiences, and expressed fear that one of
the barrage of tets mind indicate he was actually straight.

I am a fan of John Barrowman anyway, but thought the doco stood as a great
doco in its own right. If you are interested, its no doubt been uploaded to
YouTube (in two or three parts) already, and is probably available on the
BBC's site somewhere if you re allowed to view BBC content in your country
(I'm not).

Folks here have discussed sexuality in the past, and htough that people
might want to explore the latest scientific findings on homosexuality - and
see John Barrowman as himself too.

I did watch a few minutes of this programme but as I can't abide JB's oh so
pleased with himself smugness, quickly moved on. I doubt I'll be able to
resist checking out the length of men's fingers from now on and wondering
just how accurate this test might be.

Speaking from experience, no more accurate than the size of their noses
or feet....

Blessed be,
Baird

Its funny, I don't find him at all smug... but rather... well, gay.

LOL.

The idea was that if you were exposed to alot of testosterone in the womb,
your ring finger will be significantly longer than your index finger - men
traditionally having longer ring fingers in relationship to their index
finger than women. So, it was thought that perhaps gay men might show ring
fingers that were shorter in relationship to their index finger than
straight men. Not so, according to the doco.

The only thing they could find as a significant trend was the number of
older brothers. The more older brothers, the more likely to be a gay man. No
guarentee, and no explanation about gay men with no older brothers or gay
women.

Thank you so much Yowie for the finger lengths explanation as I couldn't
remember which way round it was supposed to be. Shall still be checking out
all my gay friends fingers. How do yours measure up to this theory Baird,
Joseph, Dale, Dicon..........?

snipped from another post on the same subject, you say

<Its funny, I don't find him at all smug... but rather... well, gay.>

Maybe that's it, he works way too hard at being 'perceived' gay for my
liking. Almost as if he's not a 100% sure and is desperately trying to
convince both himself and us he is. Watching him recently on the Jonathan
Ross talk show I positively squirmed at his OTT campness. As thingy said to
whatsit in Gone With The Wind " Frankly my dear I don't give a damn" one way
or the other ;-).

What really struck me was how he suddenly speaks with a thick Glaswegian
accent when talking to his mum and dad...

The reason I mentioned noses and feet is that the same theory applied to
them, at one time or another during my lifetime.

Of course.

Sorry, April. The only person in the world to whom that could possibly
matter is the SO - and he doesn't care.

During my salad days, we came in two colors - "nelly" and "butch."
Sometime during the '90s, those designations changed to "gay" and
"straight acting," which latter was redefined by "gay" men to mean
"expressing internalized homophobia." (Personal aside: I don't recall
how many times I've been told that I'm "not really gay at all...." in
spite of having been in a committed relationship, as we call 'em
nowadays, to another man who is "not really gay at all" for the past
eighteen years.)

Personally, I suspect that "nelliness" and "butchness" are beyond the
control of the individual, just as the fact of being gay in the first
place seems more and more likely to be according to scientific evidence.

Which doesn't alter the fact that, like April, I find that the nellier
they are, at least in public, the more I cringe. I hide it well, or at
least I hope I do, and as far as I can tell, nelliness in others doesn't
affect the SO at all, but still....

Blessed be,
Baird

I was 4 when my family & I moved from the south east of Engand to Australia.
Usually I speak with a pretty standard Australian accent, but according to
my husband, I slip straight back into the English accent of my 'birth'
whilst talking to my parents. The interesting thing, though, is that I don't
notice the change.

Oh I thought you were talking about the 'alleged' relationship between the
size of <finger, nose, feet> and length of the penis :-)

Now I am confused.

Unless length-of-penis has been said to correlate to the amount of
testosterone a male fetus is exposed to in utero, um, 'no'.

That's just a phallusy.

Eeek no! Never heard of it. I did wonder why you would be so secretive about
the length of your index finger compared to the ring finger, now I know why

<reproachfully> Now, Yowie, you *know* I don't like, don't trust and
won't use emoticons. In my opinion, tacking a smiley onto the end of an
insult does not magically render that insult either funny or less
hurtful - any more than the phrase, "...no offense" causes me to feel
any friendlier towards a speaker whose obvious intent was to cause
offense.

Blessed be,
Baird
