I have scanned and OCRed the reports below. They were part of
the exhibits submitted in Cooper's lawsuit against the Church of
Scientology of Boston, Inc. filed in the Federal District Court for
the District of Massachusetts.
Note: I presume the "C" appearing at the beginning of many
entries represents "called". Cooper recorded many of her
telephone conversations with others and provided
the tapes of these telephone calls to Bast. Several hours of
the Bast tapes are Cooper's playing of these tapes she
recorded from her home for Bast, accompanied by her explanations
of the people involved and their activities.
My remarks are included in square brackets.

60 minutes to do 18 minute segment on Scientology
focusing primarily on their take-over of the Florida town
of Clearwater. Likely people to be on are Paulette Cooper,
Gabe Cazares (former mayor of Clearwater) possibly Bill
Snyder (Clearwater radio announcer) Raymond Banoun
(government prosecutor against Scientology.) The announcer
will be Mike Wallace, the producer is Allan Moraynes,
researcher is Gayle Eisen.
-------------------------------------
Prime Time (NBC's competitive newsmagazine program with
Tom Snyder) was to air a segment February 16th promoting the
Institute for the Achievement of Human Potential, a school that
uses unique training methods. They called P.C. Monday the 11th
because they learned that one of the people involved was a
Scientologist and the school was using L. Ron Hubbard's books.
We put them in touch with several people, two of whom were able
to provide sufficient information of Scientology connection to
probably cancel the segment this Saturday; convinced them that if
they would wait until 60 minutes was over we would give them full
assistance so they could produce dynamite Scientology expose.
-----------------------------------------------------
The Scientologists contacted WBZ, a Boston NBC station to put them
on the air. Program agreed but began sniffing around and found out
Scientology had bad reputation. They spoke to Michael Flynn, Boston
attorney who agreed to go on against them. When Scientology learned,
they backed out and Flynn went an alone, attacking Scientology.
Program to be aired Sunday morning, February 17, 1980
----------------------------------------
Readers Digest, with 17 million circulation currently completing
article on Scientology, tentatively titled (will be changed)
"Scientology: Anatomy of a Dangerous Cult." Story written
by Eugene Methvin of McLean Virginia and will run around May
or June.
------------------------------
Time magazine reporter Evan Thomas was doing preliminary
research for a major expose on Scientology. Temporary hold
put on article for fear of legal repercussions but article will
probably still run in near future.
--------------------------
Public Broadcast System will begin filming a documentary special
on Scientology in February or March. The company producing the
film is Image Audio, the producer is Leslie Shatz and the researcher
i!i Susan Emmanual. At the moment, they plan to treat the subject
from the "constitutional" angle, in other words, sympathetic to
Scientology's claim of harassment by the government. However, will
be feeding information and meeting with them that will at worst
balance the picture, and at best, turn into a full expose.
(2)
Jerry Renner of Religious News Service (a syndicated newspaper
service that goes primarily to religious type newspapers in America)
contacted P.C. Monday the 11th concerning a possible expose in
the future of Scientology. Promised full cooperation.
---------------------------
Ed Plowman of Christianity Today (a magazine that goes to religious
people with a circulation of about 200,000) would like to do an
expose on Scientology and/or a story about their harassment of P.C.
Promised full cooperation and will meet with him in Washington.
-----------------------------
Have been trying to get the New York Times to do something, but
the person they assigned the story to (Nat Sheppard Jr.) has been
sitting on the story doing nothing. Went to Victor Briggs, religion
reporter, who said he might be interested in doing it just from
the angle of what they did to New York author P.C. Evan Thomas of
Time magazine has a friend there and said he would speak to them
for P.C. about a major expose. (Also contacted John Crewsden,
another investigative reporter but he wasn't interested.)
----------------------------
Connie Brooke, a reporter for American Lawyer interviewed P.C.
re a full expose of Scientology's harassing legal tactics. The
story has a temporary hold on it, probably because of nervousness
about Scientology's litigiousness.
-----------------
PC plans to contact Tom Snyder's Tomorrow show (her contact
there, Debbie Vicar) after 60 minutes to see if they will put her on
for an hour to expose Scientology.
------------------
Judy Richheimer, a freelance writer was assigned by Media People
to do a story on Paulette Cooper
------------------
PC currently working with Clearwater Sun to do expose on Hubbard's
secret son, L. Ron Hubbard Jr. Am continuing to work on this.
------------------------
The BBC in London is doing an expose on Scientology/Narcanon and
will continue to follow this up. Also, Paul Burt of BBC radio
contacted PC re a radio interview in the future.
------------------------------------
3
Pierce Ackerman of Australian News Limited contacted P.C. re
story of Scientology's relation to other cults and general dirty
tricks. Will be meeting with him shortly concerning this.
----------------------
Carol Hemingway of KABC radio in Los Angeles interviewed PC re
Scientology documents but their legal department got scared. They
may redo the interview in the future.
-------------------
Virginia Culver of the Denver Post considering an expose of the
mysterious death of the daughter of a Denver man in Scientology
(the "Meister case.")
---------------------
Sherman Fredericks of Las Vegas Review Journal is interested in
doing an expose on Scientology but is waiting for a news angle.
Story will probably appear in the future.
---------------------------------------
Howie Carr of the Boston Herald American has been given
documents concerning attempts to rob the Boston DA's office
and is waiting for an overall news angle.
----------------------
Paul Langley (not the correct spelling of his name) and Jim Franklin
of the Boston Globe are interested in doing something to expose
Scientology but are waiting for a news angle.
----------------------
Pat Shellenberger of the Detroit Daily News has written an article
exposing Narcanon as a Scientology front organization and is
continuing to do exposes in his area. His next story, next week,
will probably be about Narcanon's selling certificates to prisoners.
--------------------------
American Family Foundation has asked PC to do a series of
brief articles (for no pay) for their newsletter and she has agreed.
The American Family Foundation is an anti-cult group.
-----------------------
PC considering contacting Mother Jones, a magazine with wide cir-
culation among college kids to assign her an expose of Scientology's
relation to other cults since they have been interested in this
area in the past.
-----------------------------

The article ran in the May 1980 issue. The actual title was
"Scientology: Anatomy of a Frightening Cult".

Looks like it either didn't happen or the research was for the
very long term. I don't see any articles in Time about Scientology
between 7/25/77 and 1/31/83.

Christianity Today has written often about Scientology, but I found
only three short pieces unrelated to Cooper in 1980.

I found no articles in the NY Times about Cooper in 1980, but
did find some on 4/1/72 (p 21), 1/22/79 (p 14), 11/24/79 (p 6),
and 3/10/81 (section II, page 8).

This article ran as "Scientology's War Against Judges", by
James B. Stewart, in the December 1980 issue of _American Lawyer_.
(Stewart recently wrote the best-selling book "Blood Sport", about
Whitewater.) You'll find some information about Bast in this
article. See

The Sun wrote a lot of stuff about Scientology; I'd love to go through
their archive. I haven't seen any of their stuff posted to the Net;
maybe someone in Florida can help?

Once again, would appreciate knowing if any actual broadcast resulted.

ditto - Ted Mayett, can you find out if this ran?
>Howie Carr of the Boston Herald American has been given

Howie Carr is a first-class jerk, but maybe I'll swallow my pride
and give him a call anyway. He probably won't remember any more
what he did 16 years ago, when he was actually a real journalist
instead of a right-wing raver.
> Paul Langley (not the correct spelling of his name) and Jim Franklin

It would have been Paul *Langner* at the Boston Globe. He wrote
a story about LaVenda Van Schaick in the 12/15/79 issue, which I
may post later. The Globe carried a lot of short pieces about
Scientology in 1980, but nothing that I'd label an "expose".
The Globe also ran a long article on March 10, 1981 about
Paulette's lawsuit against the Church. I'll try to post this
as well.
I believe that James Franklin still covers the religion beat for
the Globe, and Langner is a senior editor there.

Anyone in Detroit who can help locate this article? I'd like
to see it.

To my knowledge, no such article ever ran, though Mother Jones did
run an article about Scientology in Russia much later (1993).
>Book proposal by P.C. "CULT: THE SHOCKING STORY OF
>SCIENTOLOGY" currently at all major paperback houses, and

To my knowledge, PC's second book on Scientology
never got out of the proposal stage.
This activity log shows a *very* dedicated and
hard working woman. I'm impressed. It's just too bad that
Bastard found out about all this....

Many? How many? Which ones.
Come on, Diane. The "great researcher" is not normally this vague.

So fucking what? How has this information contributed to our knowledge of
Scientology and its tactics one iota?
Hell, Diane will be posting Paulette's 1984 dietary details next.....

Actually, this particular posting of Diane's *was* useful, as it
listed a number of media reports on Scientology during 1980 that Paulette
helped out with. Some of these are already online, and I'm hoping that
people who read this may be able to furnish information about others.
(See my other post in this thread.)

I found the info Ron Newman posted about Paulette's past to be of a much more
personal nature than anything Cath said in the deposition. It's interesting
that no one seems to be criticizing Ron for having posted what he did. I
understand that Ron posted it because he felt that it might promote a more
sympathetic attitude towards Paulette, but I found it startlingly personal.

Marina? I don't know. I think Dan McKinon already made this
mistake because seaorg posted from Zippo.

And if you bothered to read other posts and examine evidence, Diane, you
would not be so stupid as to assume that sea...@super.zippo.com is Marina
Chong. I know Marina well enough to know that she has *never* posted to this
newsgroup under a pseudonym or anonymously.
Are *all* your assumptions based on what you perceive as evidence this
unreliable?

Cath had not been Cooper's psychiatrist for decades. Cooper
and Cath continued their relationship as friends long after their
professional relationship ended. If you'd bothered to read the
affidavit before railing against it, Marina, you would see that this
is made quite clear by Cath himself.
Nothing involving Cath's professional contact with Cooper is
divulged in this deposition. Physician/patient confidentiality is
not breached. Cath had his own attorney present during
the deposition as well as Cooper's counsel to insure that such
a breach would not occur.
If you would bother to read the complaint filed by Paulette
Cooper initiating this lawsuit against the cult, you would see
that one of the causes of action in the complaint was the cult's
alleged theft of records from the offices of Dr. Cath.
If you bother to read Cath's deposition, you will see that his
communication with Cooper was not part of any ongoing
physician/patient relationship, but rather that of a friend talking
with a friend.
If you bother to read, rather than rant, you will see that the
material Cath believed may have been taken from his office
were *not* confidential psychiatric records. Rather, they were
notes he had made to himself regarding phone calls he had
received from Cooper -- as a *friend*, not as a *patient.*

I see you have been reading -- and believing -- Dan McKinnon's poorly-reasoned
drivel alleging that seaorg is me.
I have already denied that in a followup to his original post, and it does look
as if I will have to respond to his subsequent 1222-line load of crap, which I
was going to ignore because I thought it would testify to its own stupidity. But
you seem to have swallowed it hook line and sinker, Diane.
If you can swallow that, *what* else can you swallow, Diane?
Do you assume that everyone posting from Zippo is me?
I post under my own name, as is well known. I do not have any reason to post
under any other name.
My opposition to your disgusting behaviour vis-a-vis Paulette Cooper is well
known. I don't hide my dislike of you or your tactics, so why should I express
that dislike by pretending to be someone else? If I wanted to abuse you
anonymously (not that seaorg's post was in any way abusive) I would use a
remailer or a chain of remailers, maybe even with PGP. I *am* competent in my
own field.
If you're going to make unwarranted assumptions like Marina=seaorg how can we
believe anything you say about Paulette Cooper or any other? What does that say
about your ability to analyse the date you collect?

p.s. For the record, I see no plausible reason for your continuing invasion of
Paulette Cooper's privacy, by posting the Cath deposition, other than your
personal animosity.
How does it give us an insight into the abuses of the Co$?
How does it help the people involved in present-day litigation?
What other crap have you swallowed hook, line and sinker?

Sorry. I haven't had the time to read any poorly-reasoned drivel
lately. I must have missed the Dan McKinnon post.

I haven't seen any 1222-line posts from Dan McKinnon, Marina.
I've been far too busy trying to keep up with my load of scanning
documents and transcribing audiotapes to keep up with all of
the threads on a.r.s.
I didn't notice the header of the post I replied to -- from the
writing style of the post, I assumed I was reading something written
by you. You must admit that your writing style and that of "sea.org"
are quite similar.
Sorry about the mistake, Marina. It won't happen again. :)

I never said otherwise. If you had bothered to look at the header of

If you bother to read, rather than rant, you will see that I never
said otherwise. Of course I still wonder what the response would
be if Scientology had posted such a document.
Since you expressed an interest, I will tell you why I didn't criticize
him.
A few days prior to his post, I posted words to the effect that to fully
understand Paulette's character, you have to start with her birth in
Belgium. I was hoping the interested reader might recall her Clearwater
testimony make the deduction that she was a war orphan.
Apparently, Ron made the connection, and decided to post that affidavit.
Several weeks ago I proposed to Paulette that her whole life story ought
to be told. She replied, "Oh, yeah. I was born in a concentration camp.
yah yah yah." From her tone of voice it was clear that she did not want
the subject to be discussed. She doesn't want sympathy and she doesn't
want to be treated like a freak.
So that is why i didn't criticize Ron. If you want to, go ahead.
If you'll recall her quote from that newspaper article:
"I'm not easily intimidated, I'm frightened by a lot of people, and I
always try to do the right thing"
That statement is consistent with my knowledge of Paulette Cooper and i
don't want to say more.
When I first encountered that affidavit during *my* trip to Waltham
in the summer of 1995, I wrote to Paulette and asked her if she would
object to my posting it. She told me that it was difficult for her to
re-read it, but that by all means I should post it if I wanted to.
I am troubled by the verbatim posting of the Cath deposition. Even though
Paulette was no longer his patient at the time of the depo, the fact
remains that she once was. If I had known that my posting of
Cooper's affidavit would have induced Diane to violate Paulette's privacy
in this manner, I would not have posted.

Please note that Diane has been the

Kindly cite some *recent* cases of "abuse under what have seemed to be
temporary aliases assumed, apparently, simply for the purpose of harassing her",
particularly in these threads.
And while you're at it, kindly cite the instances of "abuses" perpetrated by
sea...@super.zippo.com upon Diane Richardson and anyone else you can think of.
Oh, and tell me why it would be reasonable to assume that *I* would adopt a
different persona to ask some polite questions of Diane Richardson and/or
comment on her recent actions.
I daresay you'll agree that I'm not being "randomly suspicious" if I suspect
that you're condoning Diane's attributing someone else's post to me?

These are some of the ~~very~~ few abuses perpetrated (not by
seaorg) upon Diane:
Xenu’s Sister:
Bitch is "awfully derogatory toward female dogs, and
I love dogs too much to equate them with Diane even in
slang."
Anima:
"You are not good enough to have piss on you."
William Barwell:
"This woman is pitiless human garbage without mercy or
sense."
And of course it is the very same people who gargle about
"the pitiless personal attack on PC by Diane that simply
is beyond the bounds of reasonable or useful."

I couldn't find Marina's reply to this because AOL sucks, so I'll answer
both of you here. Marina, from what I remember of your reply to my post,
you asked if anyone had recently harassed Diane from an anonymous account.
MasterTed immediately springs to mind. That was about a week ago.
Several people suspect it's actually Fishman, who is suspected of doing it
before from another account. I think this answers Martin as well (I'm
assuming he was referring to this). There was another series relatively
recently, nonFishman, where Diane named another person (DaveL_?) she
thought had made an anonymous post directed at her. I have no idea if she
was accurate, but someone was using an anon account to vent their
feelings.
You seemed to be offended by my post. Please take it at face value, I
didn't mean to imply anything about you at all. I'm simply pointing out
that people have indeed harassed Diane from anonymous accounts. I'm not
saying you shouldn't be offended by the accusation, or that you should.

Xenu, Masterted is simply Masterted, as Cornelius pointed out, with
convincing documentation. He is a man whose son is in scientology,
and has disconnected from his family, causing them great pain.
He had hoped to find support on a.r.s, and instead found flame wars;
and was honestly expressing his frustration. Moreover, although some
objected to his questions and speculations concerning Diane, they were
not harassing or couched in abusive language.
The idea of Marina and others assuming anonymous id's to harass Diane
seems a bit on the paranoid side to me, and I think it would be wise to
take into account the stress she's been under before accepting her hunches
as literal truth.

Mmm, her silence wasn't very quiet. In the only words she
managed to utter herself rather than through her proxies, she
revealed so much more of her character that was totally in line
with the depiction of those who knew her since their AOHell
