Following the TV 4 News (a major Swedish channel) coverage of the Narconon-
King of Sweden story yesterday, several newspapers carry the story today
6 April 98. The two biggest national papers, Aftonbladet and Expressen, run it
as the major front page story.

"The King and Queen used in propaganda film by religious cult. The Royal Court
says: we don't know how they got hold of the pictures"
(Aftonbladet head line)

"The King does not support this activity. Their majesties do not want to
figure in this kind of context, and has also not been asked for permission"
says Court spokesperson Elisabeth Tarras-Wahlberg to Aftonbladet.

Apparently, the Scn video contains footage from an internal Court meeting,
probably up to 10 years old, according to the Court spokesperson. The King and
Queen were invited to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Narconon Sweden last
year, but declined. Then Narconon asked for a congratulatory cable message
(which the King routinely sends out to organizations celebrating
anniversaries), and got one of those, which is shown in the video.

The Varby Gard (area where Stockholm Narconon is located) chief of police,
Lars Serenander was also shown in the video. He says "Nobody said anything
about Scientology" (Aftonbladet)

Narconon Sweden spokesman Thomas Lillhannus says in Aftonbladet:
"We have apologized to the Court and to the police. The Church of Scientology
will have to cut out the scenes from the Court.
He further blames this whole thing on an american TV team from CoS, and says:
"We would never have approved this video if we'd seen the final result.
Somebody from the CoS has made a f* mistake. There are several incorrect
statements in the video."

On top of this, TV 3 news yesterday, and some papers today (I've seen it in
Aftonbladet and Goteborgs-Posten so far) tell about a new book on cults in
Sweden which will be released today, "Att leka med elden" (Playing with Fire).
It's written by Karl-Erik Nylund, a priest who's been studying cults for
years. He calls Scientology "the most dangerous cult in the world".

(It's the first time here I've seen Scientology mentioned in two different
news items on the same day.)

Did they cover the issue of the allegedly forged newspaper headlines shown in
the CoS film? Were the banners of real Swedish newspapers forged, or was it
just one of those old-style movie effects where unidentifiable newspapers flip
past with large bold headlines?

If real newspaper banners were used with the forged headlines, I think this
piece of deceitful propaganda should be thoroughly exposed; I'd like to see a
frame from the film, and a scan of the same newspaper's denunciation of the
fraud, posted to a.b.s. and preferably webbed.

Inquiringly,

As the movie goes on real fast I was not able to see the text on the

I don't know anything about Swedish law, but in the United States,
if someone produced a fake newspaper front page for purposes that
were not clearly satirical or fictional, the newspaper could probably
sue him for trademark infringement and maybe also for libel.

Movie studios (real ones) usually wind up making phony covers that just
sort of look like real ones. 'Newsspeak' instead if 'Newsweek' and so
forth. Catch the end cretis of Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey for a whole slew
of em'...

So, I'm not sure if you can do it, even in jest. As far as I know, the
distinctive name and logo of a tabloid or newspaper, or even a magazine,
is a trademarked symbol, uniquely identified with that particular
publication. If they *did* use existing paper names and titles in a
fraudulent manner, they may very well have violated all sorts of laws.

Who knows, this might even be useful as evidence in those trademark
infringement suits - unclean hands and all that.

Maybe a RealVideo file of the Scientology lies would fit nice somewhere.

In feature films, product placement will work out a licensing deal (CNN was
seen in several features before it was decried for that practice). Or a another
name will be used (ie "Newsspeak").

A documentary, however is a whole other kettle of fish.

There's a celebrity critic! The King of Sweden, no less. :-)
Operation footnuke proceeds apace. Now, what was that anon
person saying about the King, and how it proved something
about Scientology working? I hope s/he reads this; in their
mind, it must be proof positive that Scientology does *not*
work. You can't have it both ways, kids. If the case for a
workable technology is:

True=success in high circles

then:

False=failure in high circles.

(of course, anon's entire premise was wrong, but I'll ignore that
in the effort to probe their own form of "logic". "High circles"
was *their* arbitor of truth and evidence.)

Would be nice if it could be arranged :o)

Todays newspaper HD Helsingborgs Dagblad (7 April 98)

THE SCIENTOLOGISTS GAVE A FORGED PICTURE

The King of Sweden, TV3, some bigger newspapers, among them HD and the
Swedish Police are described as patrons when the Scientology movement
market their Swedish activities internationally.
Behind this disclosure is TV4-News.
'Of course we don't support the movement or their organisation
Narconon. On the contrary there is good reasons to critically examine
the different activities of Scientology' says the editor in chief of
HD, Sven-Åke Olofsson.
The Scientologists propaganda movie shown in TV4 is intended for
international use. The movie says that even the King of Sweden has
realized that Sweden has an answer to drugabuse. When the movie is
zooming in the royal couple the speaker says 'and the answer is
Narconon'. In the same treacherous way is drawn pictures of leading
Swedish newspapers frontpages or news bills shown.
'It is grotesque to try to give out an impression that mediae, the
royal family and governments in any way should have patroned or
recommended the movement' says Sven-Åke Olofsson.
In the north/west part of Skåne (province in Sweden) has Narconon had
a long struggle to establish a Narconon in Brandsberga, Ljungbyhed.
Those plans made the neightbors to protest against it. The social
welfare committee in Klippan said an emphased NO, but after several
appeals in different instances the county administrative courts
approval stands.
