Thank you for your website and your effort to find others.
My sister “Junie” and I both were taken to a therapist who I only
remember as Linda…I was twelve at the time (I’m in my 20s now), my
sister was four. Our adopted father left us when Junie was only a few
months old. Mom couldn’t handle it. They had gone through two
international adoptions and both had failed at the last minute. Junie
was supposed to be the golden baby who saved their marriage, but it
hadn’t worked. Nobody even came to see her when mom brought her home.
Junie had colic, mom thought my sister’s crying was a deliberate
attempt to upset her. She was convinced we had parasites under our
skin. She took us to the doctor constantly, telling him he just wasn’t
looking hard enough for them, told the school nurse we had staph and
told all our family members we had scabies. I still have scars on my
back from her trying to dig out my freckles with peroxide and sewing
needles. As soon as they were healing she would say she “saw something
in it” and open the wound again. Then she took us to the doctor and
said we had sores that wouldn’t heal.
What mom needed was help. Now that I am older, I look back on it and I
am angry that our family didn’t do something besides just turn their
heads the other way. I blame them as much as anyone else.
One of mom’s few remaining friends pulled her into the RAD/AT cult at
this horrible, vulnerable time. This friend convinced her that the
problem was us. I still have never forgiven that woman for what she
did to our family.
Mom took us to several child therapists, who told her we seemed fine.
Mom said it was because we were both manipulators, that we even
somehow managed to trick all these professionals. Everyone was just
blind to what trouble we were. Every time this happened she yanked us
and went looking for a new therapist who would validate her. Finally
her friend found Linda.
The therapist diagnosed me with ODD and RAD and my sister with RAD,
she showed my mom how to do “holding
therapy.” She ignored the fact that our adopted father had physically
and sexually abused me and that restraining me sent me into panic
attacks. All these years she felt like nobody understood her and now
she had someone who did.
They told me I was hateful.
They held me down to spit on me, lick me and scream at me. My adopted
father had sexually abused me. Mom knew this and still let them do it.
She watched, and sometimes helped. I was powerless and I felt like I
was being attacked all over again, only this time it wasn’t in a
locked bedroom, it was in an office in broad daylight. Everyone in the
room was helping to hurt me, and like a rapist, they told me when I
just stopped fighting and took it like a good girl, everything would
be okay.
They taught me how to hate. They told me I was manipulative.
Eventually you realize that the world doesn’t care. Nobody cares, and
so you just take it. Go limp and let your mind be somewhere else. I
learned the exact words and expressions I needed to use to get away. I
knew what to say to make them happy. I would do anything to make them
happy, just to avoid being held down and tortured again. They taught
me to manipulate. They told me I was a liar. When my sister Junie
would misbehave, I took the blame and the punishment. When mom asked
me if I loved her, after an hour of holding me down, screaming in my
face and wiping spit on me, I said yes. I didn’t mean it.
I couldn’t mean it, at least not then. But I said it to stop mom from
hurting my sister.
They taught me to lie. One day, Linda was gone. She moved to another
state without so much as telling anyone. Linda took people for all
they were worth and felt no other obligation to us, once the checks
cleared. After all this, I think my mother was hurt the most, which
sounds strange but it’s true.
Our relationship never recovered. She lost her daughters forever
because in a vulnerable time, she listened to someone’s bad advice.
Again, thanks and just thought you should know there are two more
survivors out here.

I just received this today from Niels, a maintainer at Pound Pup Legacy, which
is a group dedicated to exposing child abuse
and advocating the needs of children who have been victimized by the more
unsavory aspects of foster care and the adoption
industry:
Our site is temporarily shut down by our hosting provider because Ron Federici
filed a complaint about us
mentioning his licensing information in the state of VA.
Hopefully we� �ll quickly be back online.
As published earlier, Ronald Three Feet Federici (who likes to be referred to
as the Emperor ) has made several
attempts to lie, bluster and bully his way into getting Advocates for Children
in Therapy (ACT) silenced as well.
Federici s fraudulent and outrageous misuse of the DMCA proved to be ultimately
unsuccessful as ACT was picked up
wholeheartedly by 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization Project DoD, a community-run
web host dedicated to preserving free
speech and the spirit of democracy.
For those of you unfamiliar with PPL, here is the main page summary from Google
cache:

abuse have on an individual and on society.
PPL s mission is to become a recognized voice in future decisions regarding

networking with organizations and persons that:

It goes without saying that Ronald Federici (and most likely Arthur
Becker-Weidman as well, although he often prefers to
work more behind the scenes) will continue to shut down all outlets that
disseminate the truth about attachment therapy and
its proponents.
This blog site dedicated to survivors of this child abuse could very well be
next. Preparations are being made, but
we need your help.
Please.

ETA: Incidentally, PPL was also the site that hosted the APSAC Task Force Report
on Attachment Therapy (Feb. 2006)
for me. This document, which is officially backed by the American Psychological
Association, is the most comprehensive
publication on AT and its associated parenting techniques to date. It is an
indispensable tool and resource for opposing this
lethal pseudoscience.
I am looking for concerned citizens to host this indispensable report on their
own server space while PPL is down. Please
comment or e-mail to volunteer.

need any more volunteers, so much
gratitude again to those who stepped up. The document is now hosted at multiple,

The dispute with our service provider has been solved. We are back online. The
licensing information of Ronald
Federici has been removed, but it has made us all the more eager to expose his
practices and those of other
attachment therapists .

I don t have my own server, but I linked to the Report of the APSAC Task Force
on
Attachment Therapy, Reactive Attachment
Disorder, and Attachment Problems on my blog recently. So, it is available on
line and, you are right, it is a great
tool for understanding attachment therapy.
In fact, I referred a mom on my Haiti adoption group to it just yesterday. She
is having trouble with her 9-year old
and someone recommended attachment therapy and all my red flags and warning
lights were going off.

Q: What is attachment therapy?
A: Attachment therapy (widely known as "holding therapy," "rage-reduction" or
"dyadic developmental therapy") is a
torturous and entirely unscientific practice that preys on orphaned adoptees,
foster kids and children who already have a
history of abuse.
Attachment therapy techniques rely on forceful physical coercion and restraint,
non-consensual touching, verbal abuse,

No, the therapist was not named, but the posting was "tagged" with the
names of other therapists. Why? What did they have to do with it?

By contrast, there are plenty of libelous and defamatory Wordpress
blogs that are tagged with my name that name organizations and
individuals I have absolutely zero to do with. What many of us have
written to the Wordpress cowards and asked is why the double standard?
How is it that my name gets linked to made up names of quack machines

Institute and names of people I never even heard of until these

Yup. That's the one. Freedom of speech will prevail, with or without
the Wordpress cowards' help. Wordpress is all to happy to host blogs
on all kinds of quackery (they also host a number of blogs on Thought
Field Therapy), but if anyone dares to criticize it, they censor. So
if you're a quack, you are welcome at Wordpress, but if you criticize
quackery or blow the whistle as a survivor, as Wayward Radish did,
best to find another blog host. Fortunately, there are plenty of them
out there.

I go by behavior, not mind reads. The behavior of Wordpress is that of
a coward, plain and simple. The relevant blog has been referenced here
and you are in no position at all to lecture me on citations and
critical thinking. Oh and by the way, anonymous coward, did you hear
about the model and what she was able to have the courts order, in
terms of her anonymous blogger who defamed her and cyberstalked her?
The courts ordered the blog to expose the blogger's e-mail so your
days of libeling and defaming me anonymously in blogs may well be
numbered. The model's case set a legal precedent, so the cowards at
Wordpress may well be forced by court order to reveal the anonymous
cowards who have been posting libel and defamation about me and
others, should we decide to pursue this.

It is not my reasoning that is at issue here. It is a decision that
was made in a recent court case. Google "Liskula Cohen" for details.
But in any case, no, this would not apply in WR's case because
disclosure is required only if the person's comments are deemed
libelous and defamatory. What has been posted about me is clearly
both. All kinds of statements of fact were made about me in those
anonymous postings and ads that can be proven false in a court of law
and the burden is placed on the person being sued for libel and
defamation to prove the statements that were made. The anonymous
coward who posted the ads wasn't counting on the possibility that a
court could order his identity to be revealed. Here are just a few
examples of falsely stated facts in those ads and/or blogs: It was
stated that I work for Sarah Palin's campaign. I have never worked for
Sarah Palin in any way, shape or form, nor did I even vote for her. A
statement was made that I was her "Science advisor". There is not even
any such position, as far as I know, but if there were such a
position, I would be the last person in the world who would be
appointed to such a position, as I have strong disagreements with her
policies on science. A picture was placed in several Craigslist and
Backpage ads of a Pigno-o-meter -- highly defamatory of my name. There
is no such device, much less did I invent one. It was stated that I
sold quack machines to my former clients. I have never, ever sold any
quack machines to anyone and for several years now I have been
debunking quack machines and other forms of quackery and have a solid
5 year track record of publications doing so. These are just a few of
many false facts that were maliciously posted about me.
There were also numerous false statements made about Jean Mercer,
Larry Sarner and others. If we decided to press this and take this to
court, you would be exposed and in big trouble.
In contrast, WR has not made any factually false statements. She has
expressed her opinions and told her story as a survivor. It is
outrageous that you would even think of doing this to a survivor of
child abuse and if your guru decides to do this, he will not look
good.

Wayward Radish states in this blog that Heather Forbes was behind this
most recent attempt to take the website down. In my opinion, that
makes Heather Forbes a cyberbully. Based on what was stated on this
blog, it seems that Heather objected to being called an "Attachment
Therapist". Now WR has changed this term. It really doesn't matter, in
my opinion, what Heather Forbes is called. It is her own words that I
have major problems with. For example:
"If one were to watch a therapeutic hold for the first time, without
an understanding behind the technique, he or she might perceive it to
be abusive or coercive” (p. 164 DSM-IV-TR in Action) and she and her
co-author go on to recommend holding therapy in that chapter.
Heather and her co-author also quote Nancy Thomas, a highly
controversial self-described parenting coach:

“The first clue is something that happened when Kaczynski was only six
months old. According to federal investigators, little “Teddy John,”
as his parents called him, was hospitalized for a severe allergic
reaction to a medicine he was taking. He had to be isolated – his

this separation, family members have told the Feds, the baby's
personality, once bubbly and vivacious seemed to go "flat." (1996, p.
29).
I noted on my blog, in response to this:
Anyone with minimal training in logic ought to be able to see the

that X was caused by Y. There are plenty of children who underwent

She and Federici both insist that they do not endorse the
controversial holding therapies so criticized. Perhaps not, but
readers can look at the restraint procedures recommended in the BBC
documentary on this topic and recommended in his book, Help for the
Hopeless Child and decide for themselves whether this is cause for
concern. Federici claims that these restraint techniques are safe, but
where is the evidence for their safety? When a claim is made that
something is safe, the burden of proof is on the person making the
claim. Where are the randomized clinical trials to support the safety
and efficacy of this intervention? Peter Fonagy stated there weren't
any and I have been unable to locate any, even more recently. These
are the questions that should be asked. The fact that no child has
ever died under Federici's care, while good news, is not enough to
prove safety. Children shouldn't have to die to prove something is not
safe. That's not how things work. Well designed, randomized controlled
studies ought to be done and to date they have not been. In the
meantime, people can read his book, look at his diagrams and use their
common sense in deciding whether these techniques could potentially be
dangerous.

Yes, that's correct. There have been deaths. They were not using
Federici's restraint technique, though. The most notorious case was
Candace Newmaker, who died in rebirthing session that was part of an
attachment therapy intensive and the therapists did prison time for it
(one is still in prison), but again, what they did was different from
what Federici does. Federici, ironically, has testified against such
therapists as an expert. This is not meant in any way to defend
Federici -- only to point out some differences, which may be why in my
opinion, his Virginia Board appears not to be taking complaints
against him seriously. A few states have passed laws outlawing
restraints in therapy altogether, but most states still allow it.
In hospitals there are very strict rules about restraints that have to
be adhered to and hospitals have to prove to their accrediting
organization that they are abiding by these rules so that patients who
have to be restrained because they are harming themselves or for
medical reasons, are safe. Everything possible is done in hospitals to
reduce the use of restraints unless they are necessary to prevent harm
(for example, a patient trying to pull out a ventilator tube because
he is delirious). I know what this involves because I used to be part
of a restraints reduction team at a hospital and they have to be
meticulous in their documentation that they are following proper
procedures. It is not possible to have these kinds of rules for people
doing outpatient therapy, though, and thus the need for a law to
outlaw it altogether. If someone is in such bad shape that they need
to be restrained to be prevented from harming self and/or others, this
should be done by well trained medical professionals, not by parents
or even therapists, who typically are not trained in the safe use of
restraints.
Probably the only way to get these dangerous restraint procedures in
therapy to stop would be to pass a law that outlaws it outside of a
hospital setting and bypass state boards who for whatever reasons
refuse to do anything about this. Federici's claim and assertion is
that his restraint technique is safe but again, I am not willing to
just take his word for this and yet to see actual evidence that it is
safe. He has the burden of proof here and I would need to see more
than an argument from authority to be convinced. The mental health
profession is very slowly changing from one where assertions of
authority to one that requires actual evidence, but some people
haven't gotten the message yet.

Step Six: Define "know-point" in the Tech Dictionary.
Step Seven: Study the early Dianetic Auditor Bulletin on straightwire
in Tech Volume One. Study Creation of Human Ability references
regarding spotting objectively and subjectively. Demo "recall,"
"spotting" and "return" and how these differ.
Step Eight: This is the processing section which is done solo. Do not
fall into running pictures or incidents. In others words, do not use
"recall" or "return," use spot" only.
Fly the ruds.
Clear and false data strip "truth," identity, time," place," "form"
and event," each to EP. Restudy the definitions in the Tech
Dictionary.
Clear and False Data Strip the 8th Dynamic," God," "Infinity," 'self,"
anyone you have identified as a god and any other wording you may have
for the 8th dynamic.
Valence split (Similarity/Difference process) each answer on the
reading questions below by alternately spotting differences and
similarities between self and the terminal to a blow accompanied by a
small blowdown F/N or larger.
Spot a person or object in this L/T [lifetime] or on the backtrack you
have identified as or who represented the 8th Dynamic to you. Valence
split to EP and then recheck to an F/Ning question on call or thought.
End the session for the day and recheck to ensure it's F/Ning the next
