That's a shame. It sounds like Dr. Pinsky is becoming a classic
example of the kind of "professional psychologist" psychologist Robyn
Dawes has criticized in his book House of Cards. Dr. Pinsky seems to
be making a number of proclamations based on no real evidence at all
and worse, of people he has never even examined.
I hope he isn't claiming that he can do this because of his years of
professional experience because what research has consistently shown
is that years of experience as a clinical mental health professional
has no relationship to the ability to make accurate predictions about
people. In other words, there is no real evidence "seasoned" mental
health professionals are any better at helping people or predicting
human behavior than novices who have been educated in the basics.
Tom Cruise and Angelina Jolie are obviously complex human beings but
why engage in all this speculative diagnosing? The least Dr. Drew
could do is show them the respect of refraining from making
proclamations about them based on nothing more than second or third-
hand reports or observations of their behavior from afar.
Psychologists who are truly scientific in their approach are humble
enough to realize that there is no way we can say what precisely
caused people to behave as they do as adults. Fortunately, the forms
of therapy that have been shown through reserach to be effective don't
require that we gain such an understanding.
He already had some firsthand testimony from Tom Cruise, who has said
his father was an irresponsible jerk and a bully.

But in the case of Angelina Jolie, it seems like pure conjecture.

That is not a proper way for a mental health professional to make a
diagnosis. Dr. Drew realizes that and apologized. Had he not, his
peers would have taken him to task for that and I think he knew it.
The fact that someone portrays their father as a jerk and a bully
doesn't mean that this was a cause of his getting into Scientology. As
you're probably aware, Scientology has been known to turn people
against their parents so for all we know, the causation could be
reversed here. I said some pretty horrible things about my own parents
in auditing sessions that I now regret and no longer see as true, as
I'm sure many others have.

I'm sure he's watched just as many interviews of Angelina Jolie where
she may have shared about a heroin problem, but again, this ought not
to be a basis for conclusions.

I didn't say it was. I said it came across as more credible than his
way speculative comments about A.J.

No it couldn't. Tom's mother left his father when he was twelve years
old, and they were estranged after that. Tom didn't get into
Scientology until many years later. He already had a longstanding
resentment of his father, and he said so quite clearly. Just read the
article.

See previous thread, or Monica's description. He said Tom Cruise might
have gotten into Scientology because of childhood neglect or abuse.
There is no evidence that this kind of thing causes cult involvement.
There are plenty of people who lose parents who never get involved in
cults.

The interview where he described his feelings about his father took
place AFTER he had gotten into Scientology. He was describing how he
viewed the events of his child, retrospectively from the POV he has as
a Scientologist. There is no way to know how he felt about his dad
earlier because he wasn't interviewed about it earlier. He says he
always felt a certain way but we can't know that because his present
involvement could very well have changed his perception.

Perhaps he did'nt want us to see this gossip comment:
[..] Katie Holmes reportedly sent Nicole Kidman a gift basket filled
with expensive baby clothes. Tucked among the miniature cashmere
sweaters was a note that read, “Help!” [..]

A minor bit of the whole post, and not the topic of the thread.

Now that's strange because I just watched "collateral" the other day where
Cruise plays the bad/not-as-bad-as-it-looks guy where he complained of
exactly that: that his father was a bully and left when he was twelve.
Coincidence? Maybe Dr. Drew should start analyzing Cruise's films to make a
better diagnostic :-) "Interview with the Vampire" may be a good start...
