Mary Shuttleworth, Founder & Director, Youth fo Human Rights
Int'l.Mary, a native of South Africa, learned at an early age how
frustrating a study disability can be for a child. At the age of 15
when failure loomed ahead, her father took action and introduced her
to the study methods of educator and humanitarian, L. Ron Hubbard.
After learning how to learn she went back to school, where she
completed at the top of her class. This personal experience planted
the seed of her ever-growing desire to help others gain the ability to
study and enjoy the fruits of literacy.
Mary settled down in Los Angeles in the late 1980s. She has traveled
extensively throughout Africa, Europe and the USA. Having observed
first hand violations of human rights, most of them associated with
the denial or lack of education, she decided she wanted to work in the
field where she could do something about it.
Mary has devoted more than 30 years to working with children in the
home, childcare and school environments.
She has been active on national and international fronts, from
organizing local beach clean-ups to teaching inner-city students basic
moral codes. She has been involved in helping on human rights and
religious discrimination issues.
She has appeared on national and international radio and TV shows -
many of them featuring live interactions with children, parents and
educators - to help find solutions for their difficulties. Currently,
she is also writing a book on successful parenting.
Several years ago she founded a school called Mary's Schoolhouse in
Hollywood using the study technology of L. Ron Hubbard. Mary also
serves as the Executive Director of an after school community literacy
program as an addition to Mary's Schoolhouse. Young and old alike can
attend the literacy program at no charge to improve their literacy
skills.
Becoming the Director of "Youth for Human Rights International" is
Mary's latest activity. The group's stated purpose is: "To teach youth
around the globe about Human Rights, thus helping them to become
valuable advocates for the promotion of Tolerance and Peace."
Formed in August 2001 as a project of the International Foundation for
Human Rights and Tolerance, her first Youth for Human Rights
International project was to launch an essay-writing contest in
coordination with United Nations Non-Governmental Organization,
Friends of the United Nations. The contest was conducted throughout
Europe with national winners selected. The three overall winners for
Europe won a trip to Geneva, the European home of the United Nations,
to receive their awards.
Since then, Mary has expanded the activities of Youth for Human Rights
International into more than 25 countries. The booklet, What are Human
Rights?, YHRI's basic text, is now available in nineteen languages
with more on their way.

Our Purpose
"The base difficulties of our emerging world civilization are the
poverties of hope, knowledge and courage. Youth for Human Rights
International addresses these poverties head-on, enabling our young
people to know their human rights, to teach their fellows, and to
become today's and tomorrow's advocates for peace and justice." -Tim
Bowles
A graduate of the University of California Berkeley and the University
of California Davis School of Law, he first traveled to the developing
world in the early 1970s, living in the village of Jamali Sani in
rural Punjab and other places in India and Nepal. Inevitably from
these experiences, Tim gained first-hand experience of the age-old
contest for human dignity and integrity against the seemingly crushing
odds of overpopulation, poverty, illiteracy and injustice.
In the later 1970s, Tim started his legal career as attorney for the
newly formed Delphian Foundation, a not-for-profit educational
organization headquartered in the northwestern United States.
Utilizing the educational philosophy and methodology of L. Ron
Hubbard, "Delphi" is dedicated to training and inspiring students as
leaders toward lasting international peace and understanding. Thanks
in part to Tim's work, the organization has grown to become Delphi
Schools, Inc., now developing and overseeing the administration of
private primary and secondary schools and of competency-based
curricula worldwide.
Tim moved his growing family to Southern California in the mid-1980s,
where he served as general legal counsel to the Church of Scientology
International for some eight years. During this time, through court
precedent and legislation, Tim helped establish and confirm valuable
protections for free religious practice and conscience in America that
continue to benefit individuals from all faiths and walks of life.
During this time, Tim also helped establish several non-religious
social service groups that continue to expand and bring improved
conditions in important sectors, including Narconon International, a
leading drug rehabilitation organization, and Applied Scholastics
International, combating illiteracy worldwide.
Since the mid-1980s, Tim has also advised and assisted the Citizens
Commission on Human Rights International (CCHR), a human rights
watchdog dedicated to the exposure and resolution of abuse and
brutality committed by psychiatrists and other mental health
practitioners. Tim is currently a Commissioner of CCHR International.
Moving into a broad civil practice in the 1990s, Tim has been active
in the progress for human rights in the workplace, both in the United
States and abroad.
Tim has worked with Youth for Human Rights International President
Mary Shuttleworth over the past few years on several projects,
including two trips back to India and another to Ghana to organize and
produce international youth summits on human rights issues.
In taking on the position of YHRI's Executive Director in mid-2005,
Tim aims to establish and expand the organization internationally.
