Articles and editorial on the church of Scientology
January 18, 1989, Bill Daugherty, Letters to the editor, St. Petersburg Times
http://pqasb.pqarchiver.com/sptimes/access/50374931.html?dids=50374931:50374931&FMT=FT
As for the Pinellas County tax situation, if this had been honestly
researched, Koff would have found that the church of Scientology, in
1981, offered to pay the full amount of tax requested as a gift to the
city that year and in years following, as a resolution to the matter.
Ron Schultz refused the gift, apparently less interested in the money
than in carrying out some purpose best known perhaps only to himself.
In fact, Schultz has taken more than 200 churches in Pinellas County to
task over taxes, exemption from which is guaranteed in the Constitution.
With Schultz's recent loss at the poll, it is apparent that the
churches of Pinellas County, along with a lot of other voters, had had
enough of Schultz's brand of property appraisal.

Don't Be Glib: Anderson Cooper's War on Scientology
January 18, 2008, Pareene, Gawker
http://gawker.com/346532/anderson-coopers-war-on-scientology
Last night Anderson Cooper, CNN's prettiest anchor, investigated that
infamous video of Tom Cruise on Tom Cruise, Scientologist. His
correspondent talked to a former member of the church and took us deep
into the world of strange symbols and acronyms and claims made by
America's favorite tiny grinning superstar actor. Then Cooper replayed
a contentious interview with Scientology's head Inquisitor into the
crimes of Psychology. Cooper even called the religion a fraud based on
pseudo-science (or at least pointed out that that is a "criticism
leveled against Scientology"). What's Anderson's beef with LRH?

EPA a bunch of liars says Tom Cruise
January 18, 2008, eCanadaNow.com
http://www.ecanadanow.com/news/entertainment/epa-a-bunch-of-liars-says-tom-cruise-20080118.html
Tom Cruise has branded the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) liars
for saying the air was clean after 9/11.
The 'Mission Impossible' star has revealed how, as a Scientologist, he
recognised there was a problem and provided rescue workers in the
aftermath of the New York terrorist attack with detoxification therapy
based upon the works of Scientologist founder L. Ron Hubbard.

Scientologists' tall new home
January 18, 2008, Stephen Beaven, The Oregonian
http://www.rickross.com/reference/scientology/realestate/realestate11.html
Following the lead of other branches throughout the world, the Church
of Scientology of Portland has bought a new headquarters building in
downtown to meet the needs of its growing membership.
The church bought the Stevens Building for $5.4 million from a
foundation created by real estate investor Joseph Weston.

Scientology vs. the Internet, part XVII
January 18, 2008, Mathew Ingram, Ingram 2.0, Globe and Mail
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080118.WBmingram20080118144345/WBStory/WBmingram
But almost as interesting is watching the church try to remove the
video from the Internet. It's another small skirmish in a war that
Scientology has been waging for almost 15 years, since the early days
of newsgroups such as alt.religion.scientology, which posted internal
church documents in 1994. Lawsuits have been filed, mailing lists have
been shut down, homes of discussion group participants have been raided
and their computers seized -- an all-out war.
When it comes to the Cruise video, it's easy enough to get YouTube to
take the clip down, because the company is already extra-sensitive to
claims of copyright infringement (Scientology says the video is
copyrighted content meant for internal church use) as a result of being
sued for $1-billion by Viacom, and so it essentially pulls videos down
as soon as it gets a letter from someone who looks like a lawyer. Other
websites aren't so easily cowed, however.

Tom in Ground Zero tantrum
January 18, 2008, Page Six, New York Post
http://www.nypost.com/seven/01182008/gossip/pagesix/tom_in_ground_zero_tantrum_409820.htm
TOM Cruise brands federal officials "liars" and takes credit for saving
the lives of hundreds of supposedly poisoned workers at Ground Zero in
a wacky new Scientology video.

Watch more freaky Tom Cruise Scientology videos.
January 18, 2008, Troy Patterson, Slate Magazine
http://www.slate.com/id/2182452/
The main thrill here is voyeuristic, but I'm trying to dignify the
viewing experience by imagining that it offers are a few small lessons
of social science, clues to the combination of total humility and
absolute arrogance that can characterize all types of true believers.

Anti-Scientology Anons Defend Pube Warrior
January 18, 2009, Candice M. Giove, Runnin' Scared, Village Voice
http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/archives/2009/01/anti-scientolog.php
Others proudly piped up that their pubes also were among the hairs
stuck to the Vaseline coated chest of their fellow Anon now known as
Agent Pubeit, who was arrested this past Wednesday after he darted
through Scientology's Times Square headquarters, rubbing the rather
vile cocktail on his skin, which also included toenail clippings, onto
some Dianetics books. The Anon was charged with burglary, aggravated
harassment and criminal mischief, all as hate crimes.

An Open Letter to: Scientologists, Ex-Scientologists, and Critics of the
Church of Scientology
January 18, 2011, James R. Lewis, Leaving Scientology
http://leavingscientology.wordpress.com/2011/01/19/an-open-letter-from-james-r-lewis/
This Open Letter is not an apology for anything I have written in the
past on Scientology or on the cult controversy. I stand by, and am
quite happy with, my body of work up to this point. Rather, in light of
new information I have been receiving on the Church of Scientology,
there are certain aspects of my scholarship that I would like to
clarify and supplement as they bear on the current controversy.

Scientology's Goons: Intimidating a 71-Year-Old Missouri Grandmother
January 18, 2012, Tony Ortega, Runnin' Scared, Village Voice
http://blogs.villagevoice.com/runninscared/2012/01/scientologys_goons_meshell_little.php
Meshell and Heather tell me what the two women from Scientology then
told Edie: "You've been declared. We need you to sign this paper that
says you've been declared."
Meshell tried to make me understand what those words meant to Edie, a
woman who had given decades of her life to Scientology. It was as if
your church, or some other organization that is important to you, had
sent representatives to tell you that you are now considered beneath
contempt, a nonperson, an evil entity. And they do this while
presenting you with a three-page list of your shortcomings and evil
deeds.
