From 'Piece of Blue Sky:'
"In September 1978, a confidential telex ordered Mayo to quit Florida
immediately for Los Angeles...Mayo was told that Hubbard was very
ill...While recovering, Hubbard approved the purchase of the Massacre
Canyon Inn resort complex at Gilman Hot Springs (right). There were
several buildings, including a motel and a hotel, set in 520 acres and
including a twenty-seven-hole golf course. The property was about
forty miles from La Quinta, near the small town of Hemet. The purchase
price was $2.7 million....
"Hubbard dabbled with a follow-up to the Purification Rundown, called
the Survival Rundown, but most of the work was done by his Technical
Compilations Unit at Gilman Hot Springs. After lengthy surveys, the
new Rundown was released with illustrations of an American Indian
paddling a canoe, or loosing an arrow at a buffalo. Unfortunate
choices as examples of survival. The "Purif" had been advertised with
a waterfall, unintentionally suggesting an ad for menthol cigarettes."

5.1.5. Lockheed Martin Site Investigations and Cleanup
Two properties near Beaumont were used by the former Lockheed
Propulsion Company, now Lockheed Martin Company (LMC), to perform
rocket motor and munitions research and development. Beaumont Site No.
1 is located in the Potrero Creek area, and Site No. 2 is located in
Laborde Canyon.
Figure 18 shows the locations of both sites which
are tributary to the San Jacinto Upper Pressure Management Area.
Historically, the predominant activity at this site was ranching.
In the 1950s, the Grand Central Rocket Company purchased the land and
began a remote testing facility for space and defense programs.
The Lockheed Propulsion Company (LPC) purchased the property in 1960,
and began operations at the testing facility in 1963. The Beaumont
facility is comprised of two sites. Site No. 1 consists of
approximately 9,100 acres and is the area where the majority of the
testing activities were conducted. Site No. 2 consists of
approximately 2,600 acres and is located approximately five miles from
Site No. 1. The two sites were used for the processing, testing, and
disposal of solid rocket propellant, among other products, in the
1960s and early 1970s.
LMC ceased operations at the facility in 1974. Between 1974 and 2003,
portions of the overall site were used by other defense contractors
and ranchers/farmers, and for the training of heavy equipment
operators.
Site 1 contains nine areas of historical operations and they are:
Area A – Eastern Aerojet Range
Area B – Rocket Motor Production Area
Area C – Burn Pit Area
Area D – LPC Ballistics Test Range
Area E – Low Level Radioactive Waste Disposal Site
Area F – LPC Test Services Area
Area G – Helicopter Weapons Test Area
Area H – Sanitary Landfill
Area I – Western Aerojet Range
Hazardous substances that were released onsite during operation of
Site 1 include:
munitions and explosives of concern; trichloroethylene (TCE); 1,1,1-
trichloroethane (1,1,1-TCA); 1,4-dioxane; perchlorate; and PCBs.
At Site 1, the DTSC is working to obtain a Stevens Kangaroo Rat "take"
permit from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to begin an interim
groundwater extraction and treatment system due to the detection of
1,4-dioxane in the ephemeral stream that is fed by discharging
groundwater.
Site 2 contains four areas of historical operations and they are:
Area J – Final Assembly Area
Area K – Test Bays and Miscellaneous Facilities Area
Area L – Propellant Burn Area
Area M – Garbage Disposal Area
Hazardous substances that were released onsite during operation of
Site 2 include:
trichloroethylene (TCE); perchlorate; and various metals.
The California Department of Toxic Substances Control is currently in
the process of determining the leading edge of the perchlorate plume.
They are conducting bench scale bioremediation studies for perchlorate
to determine the best electron donor; to be followed by a column study
to simulate the actual subsurface conditions; and then a remedy,
including a monitoring well array, will be designed based on those
studies.

The Otherworldly Life of Rocket Scientist John Whiteside Parsons -

Strange Angel
"After all his years working wqith explosives and rockets Parsons had
accumulated a vast collection of rare and volatile chemicals. Far too
unstable to keep in his home laboratory, he had been storing them in a
warehouse owned by the Special Effects Corporation, a Pyrotechnics
company that Parsons often leant his services to, based in Pacoima in
the San Fernando Valley. While visiting his stockpile, Parsons ran
into an old JPL acquaintance Charles Bartley. Bartley had founded the
Grand Central Rocket Company, a direct competitor with Aerojet and he
had hired some space at the special effects plant for his own
explosives work - the very space Parsons had been using as a storeroom
for his substances....

"He (Parsons) was fascienated in the occult, science fiction, and
space exploration at an early age - discussing rocket technology with
Wernher von Braun in transatlantic phone calls. The stock market crash
of 1929 wiped out the family's income, and Parsons found himself
living alone with his mother in reduced circumstances.
In high school he met *Ed Forman,* and they began experiments with
chemical explosives in the Arroyo Seco behind Parsons' house. He
slowly made contacts at nearby Caltech, finally linking up with *Frank
Malina,* a student there with an equal passion for rocketry and space
travel. Professor Theodor von *Karman* took an interest in the group's
progress, and obtained facilities and modest funding for their
experiments. Malina, and later Martin Summerfield, provided the
scientific and mathematical basis for the work, while Parsons was the
intuitive alchemist. It was Parsons who came up with the combination
of **potassium perchlorate** and roofing tar, which led to all solid-
fuel rockets in use in the 21st Century. He also proved the use of red
fuming nitric acid as a room-temperature oxidizer to replace cryogenic
liquid oxygen in liquid rocket engines."

...By the end of high school, Parsons was six feet, one inch tall,
with dark wavy hair, a fashionable moustache and penetrating dark eyes
-- irresistible to women. At the same time he was active in science
fiction circles in Los Angeles and became increasingly involved in the
occult. He became the leader of Aleister Crowley's Thelema cult in Los
Angeles, leading a small coven of acolytes. In common with others in
the intellectual milieu of the time, he also dabbled in leftist
political meetings.
Parsons was one of the founding members of Aerojet in 1943, and his
solid propellant formulation was the key to the company's first
commercial success - JATO rockets to assist over-laden military
aircraft in take-off. This product was so successful that the Pentagon
made the takeover of Aerojet by a major corporation a precondition for
the large contracts they wished to place. General Tire took over the
company, and brought in their leading politically-connected tire
salesmen to run it.
