Modern medicine has eradicated smallpox. It has all but
eradicated polio. It has all but eradicated mumps, measles,
rubella and tetanus in areas where the luddites and snake
charmers haven't blocked it. Of course one has to give credit
where credit is due. Alternative remedies have wiped ... oh,
wait ... damn ... nothing ... never mind.

What an excellent and well-written blog!

Common sense and an understanding of the scientific method is not always
easy to find on the Internet, a medium overwhelmed by unthinking cranks.

The links at the right side of my blog are to other skeptical and
scientific blogs.

Assertions, speculation, and testimonials do not substitute
for evidence. Alternative treatments should be subjected to
scientific testing no less rigorous than that required for
conventional treatments.

Nicely written, quiet and powerful.

However, I question this:

"Locational Processing Assist consists of the Scientologist pointing
to various objects and asking the subject to acknowledge them. The
idea is to reorient the person's attention from any pain in their body
and into the environment. Scientology claims this process is an
antidote to being drunk."

So far as I recall the 'Locational' was... well... it was to locate.
For example you would use this on a child when the family moved to a
new location. Or the child went to a new school and etc. I think
also you would or could use this Locational to get somebody
comfortable with a new thing, like a motorcycle or something. "touch
that foot peg. thank you. touch that mirror... etc."

I just don't remember that the Locational had anything to do with
pain.

But then again, I don't remember the name of the Assist for pain,
perhaps it was the Locational.

'Introductory Demonstration Process and Assists Pack'. This thing had
them all as I recall.

This claim is made in scientologycourses.org:

"There is an interesting use of Locational Processing as a way to make a
person sober. It can make a drunk person sober in a very few minutes. As
society currently has no technology for handling the drunk, who is an
embarrassment to his family, his friends and often to himself, this
process has social value and may serve as a line of cooperation and
assistance to the police."

OK. So it does say:
"A Locational is done by directing a person’s attention off the
painful area of his body or his difficulties and out onto the
environment."

Well, OK then. But maybe this is all that new tech stuff :)
