media. People tend to think that if you're not something, then you
must be the extreme opposite. Like if you criticize any aspect of the
US gov't, people say "why do you hate America?" Amy Gutmann,
president of UPenn, gave an awesome lecture on this issue. You can
get it for free on iTunes U, for one...I highly recommend it.
There is a lot of overzealousness in here because a lot of people are

Your example is poor. George Bush is a politician, he doesn't run any
sort of JOINABLE organization. Nice try clam girl. And you speak of

I'll propose you another example. Instead, use Islam. You believe in
washing your hands frequently and in ultimate cleanliness. That's
great. So you go to alt.relig.islam and speak about how great
cleanliness is. Well then you encounter some anti-islam people who
call you an islamic moron with a germophobia problem instilled by your
parents, or WHATEVER. Then you feel you have a leg to stand on when
you sit there and say "I'm not Islamic". Does this make more sense to
you?
It doesn't matter if you're a part of them, what you're saying is
fucking stupidity. You're not promoting anything positive by being
anti-psych. That's the only place the example above fails. The anti-
Islam people really don't have a leg to stand on as cleanliness is
obviously good, just like you don't have a leg to stand on as
Psychiatry is obviously good. Otherwise it wouldn't be legal. It
wouldn't be supported by Scientists of other areas of education. It
is widely respected for a REASON.

I have, both in fact. The hospital I was forced into overall was a
great thing, and it helped me wonders. It put me around people who
were in similar mind-states as myself combined with a few group
counselors. It helped everyone open up and speak their heart.
Picture this: You were in a terrible time in your life and you
attempted suicide (more for attention probably than actually seeking
death, FWIW). Your family intelligently puts you into a mental
hospital. You're around complete strangers whom all feel the same -
and thats all you really know or care to know about them. You're
introduced to your roommate, whom you grasp to emotionally and they do
the same. Then you have group counseling sessions pretty much ruling
your day. Everyday. There are of course movies at night and snacks
and its a decent living situation. Art classes doing various things,
peaceful things. It's very therapeutic. Don't get me wrong - I
didn't like it at the time. It was some place I was forced to be and
that alone made me want to escape. I was a violent little guy and
attempted to stab a guard in his neck with a pencil to grab his keys
and hopefully get the fuck out. I was restrained then and a few other
times physically and put in restraints by several grown men. I was
only 13 or so. I was never beat or anything ridiculous, even after
stabbing the guy in the neck. Obviously, I'd be rich if they did me
wrong.. or dead.
