LRH said he offered to do this trick to a psych convention, but they
didn't take him up on it.
thanks for this link, that guys utube channel has some great,
thoughtful, videos
Re that rope trick... here is how I would try to do that trick..if I
had to...
Carefully note how the swami offers the rope to be "examined". he is
holding it firmly in two places, allowing people to touch the rope but
not to feel its weight...this was a very important clue.
I believe the rope was filled with polished, perhaps hollow, cylinders
of magnetite... that when pulled tight, would mate... perhaps the ends
were conical and fit together, inside was a braided steel cable.. When
the rope would be thrown up.. the Swami would stamp on the bottom of
the rope (cable) to stop the "throw" (or the bottom of the cable went
into a pipe previously placed in the ground - A stage "pre-set" A
skinny kid is used who doesn't weigh too much... Watch as the kid
climbs down, you can see the "rope" getting thicker at the bottom as
it bunches up from being stretched down over the magnetite cores...

Comment on Youtube: "at 0:34, there is CLEARLY a bar behind the rope.
It's not even well done. The kid's left foot pushes the rope past the
bar, and you can clearly differentiate between the rope and bar on with
the spectators white shirt providing a convenient background."
There is clearly a bar behind the rope as seen at the 33-34 sec. mark.
One other comment suggest that the rope is not thrown in the air, it's
rather footage played in reverse of a rope falling.
If i'd do it, I'd have a vertical metal pole underground ready to be
hydraulicly activated. The thick rope would be hollow inside and thus
light. It would have a metal plate inside the end. When you throw
the rope up, the pole is activated and pushes up inside the rope. Now
you haven't seen the pole and can't see the pole. The only thing to
hide is the space where the pole goes into the rope, and of course,
the ground where the pole comes out. And I'd charge a lot of money :)
Something like this on the inside?

downright scientological!
yeah ray , yer right, I watched it fullscreen and I saw the pole..
just goes to show that an outright fraud is a far easier a trick if
you can control the viewing environment completely, and what people
think they are seeing.. much like scientology.
Kindah reminds me of that gorilla video...
And here is a way to make a rope stand up:

in that case, why not just let the audience examine the rope, put it on
the ground, mumble some spell then once you finish saying abracadabra
have someone activate the hydraulic cylinder and watch the rope levitate
from the ground. It's way more magic that way.
Personally, I enjoy trying to figure out secrets of Chris Angel and
those sorts of guys. Then every once in a while you get someone like
Hubbard comes along and claims to have super powers but cannot display
them for whatever reason - giving us nothing to pick apart to try and
find the slight of hand.

I'd have been more impressed if he did it in front of James Randi, who
understands the art of illusion.
