Craptactular...shit, fuck, piss and everything nice
So long as we're all trotting out medical problems... I just learned my son probably has ankylosing spondylitis, a nasty inflammatory/auto-immune disease. At best it is a PITA and in cases can be fatal, with the full range of suckitude in between. He flunked the genetic test (has the gene), and the fact that he developed symptoms so young is a baaaaad... more »

Updated back pictures
A bit gross, but it looks better than it did two weeks ago, for various values of "better". Here are updated pictures of the surgical wound on my back. The nurse did better at focussing this time: [link] or the full URL at [link]... more »

Mmm, that's good elephant!
How do you eat an elephant? -one bite at a time. That's what "The Thing" is like. It's all I think about... the thing. I don't have to eat it, but I must. My strategy: a. make it an obsession so you never sway from the objective, even in my sleep. b. tell no one about the thing. they won't... more »

Calling all scholarly and librarian type ARK folk
I do freelance work for a scholarly online journal. I'm currently working on an article's reference list. The primary source material for one of the references can be found online, but it's got a massively long URL that would be a bitch to include in a reference list. Also, the journal articles are provided as PDFs, and we don't... more »

How Tough IS Motel Management?
I've told you about my notion for a variation on a cabin-style motel. Instead of cabins, we'd have retired tour buses. Y'know, like when Willie Nelson's bus gets a fatal transmission problem, we buy the bus and rent out its parked self by the night. I imagine a widely-spaced row of buses with themes ranging from hip-hop... more »

Why are switchblades/flick knives illegal in so many places?
Mark's sword post cause me to wonder about this. Is it because they have been made to seem so menacing by Hollywood? I just don't get it. I can have my ordinary decent lockblade out of my pocket, opened, and shoved up into your chest cavity in exactly as much time as someone with a switchblade. And certainly much more... more »
