I can say that I have successfully listened to Beethoven's Fifth
symphony without irony. YES, I did think,"NO BODY'S HOME", at
the beginning, but I did NOT think about "A Fifth of Beethoven"
at all. So that's a small victory of some sort. I wonder if I'll
remember "NOBODY'S HOME" forever. Probably, huh?

Did someone say: ICE CREAM BAR!!!!?

I still can't listen to the New World Symphony, more than 20 years after
Annie Haslam recorded that horrible "Goin' Home, Goin' Home, I Am Goin'
Home" song. And I'll always remember that "This is the symphony that
Schubert wrote and never finished," which a friend brought home from
music history class at Crane. But the most lasting misassociation,
actually, came from my own imagination. Ever since the first time I
heard the little alien tune in Close Encounters, all I ever hear when
it's played is:

Can you listen to the Ninth without thinking about ultra-violence and
a bit of the old in-out?

One must walk before running. I did listen to the "Thieving
Magpie" without any thoughts of long underwear, false eyelashes,
or bowler hats recently. I wish I could recover the Brandenburgs
without thinking of Lincoln Town Cars or Wm F. Buckley, jr.

You know, Bill, there's a whole newsgroup whose sole reason for
existence is for people to test their newsreaders by trying to post
there...

It's called "rec.org.mensa".

Yeah, but I *know* that I will get a constant but low amount of spam
from posting here, and I was impatient and didn't want to wait till I
found an article I could reply to wittily.
