It was raining and Kevin and his buddy were jogging home to Garner by
the side of the road when the culvert whined. Realizing culverts
rarely whine, the pair stopped to inspect the oddity. Inside were two
beaten and sopping wet puppies, resembling beagles. It took a lot of
coaxing and cajoling, but the boys got the male and female out, Kevin
wrapping his windbreaker around the future Wonder Dog. The year was
1995.

I've always thought Buster would speak with a Jesse Helms' North
Carolina accent, for he was courteous, charming, and he hated/feared
black males, the hair on his neck rising right before he barked and
growled. We figured a black guy beat and abandoned the pups.

Buster came north with my brother four years later, the only thing
from his dying marriage that he insisted on taking. Smart man. Buster
checked the joint out and decided it was suitable. He was housebroken,
and realized he had an entire forest to explore and poop in. He had my
number: I was working on something when Buster barked right behind me.
Peeling myself off the ceiling, I watched as Buster trotted over to my
door and sat. I opened it and Bus went out, did his business, and
often came right back in, for I knew where the Bones box was and
wasn't stingy with them. He also took a fancy to my Graham crackers
and when I came into the kitchen for breakfast, Buster was sitting in
front of the cupboards, looking up at the shelf where the Honey Maids
sat.

I think he'd sit and be petted forever, going from one tired hand to
another, also mooching anything you were foolish enough to drop. This
included a "Suicide" Buffalo hot wing I dropped one evening. Kevin and
I watched him closely for the moment he'd start to throw up and got
him outside in time.

The last few years were ones of decline, but just last week Buster's
right side "froze up" on him, as if he'd had a mini-stroke. He'd
needed help going outside this summer, though sometimes he didn't get
to the door in time -- I swear he was embarrassed.

Now the vet says it's time. Goddamit.

Goddamit, indeed. I'm sorry. Fourteen years is a long time, but no
matter how long it was, it wouldn't be long enough. It never is.

Godspeed, Buster the Wonder Dog.

Damn, Chris, I'm so sorry. There aren't good words for this. He will
be missed here.

How can one say...no words?
I believe they have souls, and we meet again.
Really i do. the love *never* ends.

Chris can look forward to that. He can also look forward to Buster
meeting the hypothetical black guy again...

> Really i do. the love *never* ends.

Poets go on about love=pain, and Buddhists about
suffering=attachments.

Yeah, well, that's life.

I know I look forward to this based on personal
experience of events transpiring a few hours
after the death of my 16 year animal companion.

No I won't elaborate.

>He can also look forward to Buster
> meeting the hypothetical black guy again...

I doubt the dogs dislike for negros was based
on a previous experience. Most dogs don't
like black people. It's visceral and transcends
the boundry of an intellectualized political
correctness blinded to animal sense.

> > Really i do. the love *never* ends.

I'd say love AND pain, and momma and a train.

>and Buddhists about
> suffering=attachments.

Love stinks.

>   Yeah, well, that's life.

Life is like a box of chocolates, that someone
opened and ate the good ones, then licked the
rest and carefully replaced them.

So that's why most black people don't have dogs. I always wondered
about that, back in the days when I wandered about the South, stopping
often at the cabins and farms of poor black folk and poor white folk.
On farm after farm--no black people had dogs. Ever. It was weird.
And white families that had black maids or cooks never had dogs
either, for obvious reasons. Even today, in the suburbs and the dog
parks of America, nary a black person to be seen walking a dog,
playing with a dog, having a dog in the back yard.

I understand that there are no dogs in Sub-Saharan Africa, and this is
clearly the reason why.

Thanks for the insight.

\It's just that dogs mistrust and dislike beings who don't resemble
their pack. If your dog has pretty much only seen white people,
he/she will growl at black people. I have plenty of black friends who
have dogs (I wonder if they growl at white people?). And then there
are the Obamas...

The Obamas are using secret CIA mind control rays to make their dogs
love them.

That's because all blacks worship Cthulhu, and Cthulhu's favorite food is
dog. White people beware - if you have a dog, you WILL receive a visit from
the Old Ones.

It's hard losing a long time companion of any species. I'm sorry that
this is happening. Putting a friend down is one of the hardest things
you will ever do, but you have to put their best interests first.
