That's OK, Darla, I wrote an ALMOST FUNNY followup to Paula's TiVo post

Reverse psychology will not help you, my dateless friend.
I would be happy to buy you a ticket on my birthday for a hamburger
today. I don't know why they gave me the Tivo instead of you.
Perhaps they didn't want to take it all the way up to Canuckistan. Do
you even have electricity in the wilds of Nova Scotia? Send me a good

ONE OF US. ONE OF US. ONE OF US.
Anyway you can now see what is so cool about these things. It's
difficult to describe to the inexperienced why they are better than
VCRs. I think that the automation and the user interface and the tricks
like pausing live TV are actually secondary; the key thing is that the
drive can record and play at the same time. A VCR is effectively
useless while it's recording something, and when it's set up to record
something on the timer, it's a fragile arrangement that can easily be
disturbed by the other people living in your house. With the TiVo (or
any other brand of hard-disk PVR) this is not an issue, so the thing can
just record shows all day without inconveniencing anyone.
And if you got the kind that is built into the satellite receiver you
can record TWO THINGS AT ONCE, which in practice almost eliminates
program conflicts unless you are completely obsessed with TV.
Our original TiVo had a 30-gig ("30-hour", though this is a crock as
that means crappy quality) drive, and we were constantly faced with the
TiVo Guilt problem of feeling obligated to watch stuff before the disk
got full enough that it could no longer keep weird things recorded on a
robotic whim. But once we put in a second drive and bumped it past 100
gigs this was no longer really a problem. The one we have now is only
80-gig, but this still does not cause much trouble. I think there's a
threshold somewhere around 60 or 70 gigabytes, beyond which the TiVo can
actually hold more shows than most people really care about watching,
and it becomes effectively infinite.

I've been shunning TiVo for quite some time now, based on the cost of
the unit, perils in upgrading as related by Kibo, and the subscription
cost, not to mention that all this was doubled by the wacky A/B cable
service in Boston.
Then I look at two bookcases full of terabytes of DVD movies and TV
shows and wonder again about the cost. I mean, even though it was only
$8 on DVD, how many times am I going to watch Cabin Boy?

Okay okay. Consider yourself the one arkdood invited to the Tivo
party. I only have a 30-hour drive.
I love the pause feature on the tivo more than anything at this point.
I am constantly being interrupted and just plain losing my
concentration. This invariably happens in one of the few places it
really matters to know what is actually going on. Now I can pause,
rewind, yell at the kids to shut up already, rewind, slo-mo, etc.
It's great! I set the tivo up to record a few things just to check
out how the season ticket and other features work. I will probably
become addicted to the recording features in time.
I am so glad to finally be at the cool table. Who knew it was
actually a cool entertainment center?

No, I am at the nerd table. My DVD player is hooked up to a 20 year
old Commodore 64 monitor (through a Radio Shack audio mixer, to mix
the stereo down to mono), we don't have satellite (cable is
unavailable), and while we have excellent reception of Syracuse's
three VHF stations, the PBS station and the rest of UHF is AWOL.
Then again, my interest in television is such that a 30 kilobyte TiVo
would probably be sufficient for me.
