A civilization creating another universe to push their's through
because the physical nature of the one that they live in is
changing( over umpteen bazillion years) and killing them is cool, alot
of science handwaving helps in this book.
Got through a bunch of John Ringo stuff, like this guys stuff
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Scalzi and Niven and Pournell's
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Escape_from_Hell_%28novel%29 got me and apparently others into re-reading Dante.

_A Darker Geometry_ by Martin and Benford, part of Niven's Known
Space "expanded backstory" in the Man-Kzin Wars series, describes the
Ones Who Pass similarly. Their universe is Big Crunch-ing around them
so they try to find a way to escape into ours. Hilarity ensues. May
not be considered canon by purists.

I got turned off to him by reading some of the _Paladin of Shadows_
series without knowing the context.

John has vast reserves of Awesome, and occasionally deploys them. He also
has a blog, Whatever, that in internet time is about three aeons old, and
he wields the Mallet of Loving Correction in its comment threads.

There is, but only for the last couple years or so. It took them a while to
get back to it.

With or without bacon, or both ways?

Anything invented between your 15th and 35th birthday is new and
exciting. Anything invented after that day, however, is against nature and should be prohibited. [Douglas Adams]
