College? Loan applications? Living with roomies? Getting a half assed job and
climbing up the social ladder? How do you people deal with this shit? What's
the typical plan?
God, if I knew who short-sighted me in the 'How to live in the real world'

Most of us cope by posting lots of inane followups to a.r.k. At least,
it works for me.

Yayy! Collidge is Phun!
Loan applications?
Boo! Loans are bad! Pay for school as you go, preferrably by having your
employer pay for it (YES, YOU CAN FIND ONE WHO WILL) or get grants and/or
scholarships (YES, EVEN YOU CAN GET A SCHOLARSHIP! I spent HI-school playing
`Bosconian' and `Tutankhamn' and barely graduated, but I got a scholarship!
Without which, I would'n' gone to collegg).
Repeat after me, I will pay for school from my job, my employer's education
benefits, grants, or scholarships. I will NOT take out loans and graduate with
debt. DEBT IS VERY, VERY BAD.
Living with roomies?
Boo! Roomies suck!
> Getting a half
>assed job and climbing up the social ladder?
Get used to the half-assedness. There's no ladder, there's just a cliff. It
takes about one megadollar to get to the top of that cliff. Until then, it's
hardscrabble. See that business man guy with his suit and his Lexus? Think he's
got it made? He's one paycheck away from being in default on his mortgage, his
STUDENT LOANS, and his Lexus lease. Nevermind the maxxed-out credit cards and
the heart disease.
> How do you people

By ignoring it. You can buy stuff and make plans for buying other stuff. You
can travel. You can take cool college classes about electrons and the Yanonmamo
and Sanscrit.
>What's the typical plan?
Be an asswipe for the rich or live in a box under the freeway, you decide
what's right for you.

They were trying to spare you. HI-school REALLY WAS as good as it gets! Until
you're 40, then you start paying off like a slot machine! CHA-CHING!

Try explaining the fiscal and socio-cultural benefits to your
development as a human being joining the local gang would grant you.
Then walk around in a bandana and purple lipstick for a week. Answer all
questions with "The time comes for the dogs of blood and pestilence to
walk the path". Light candles often and place them in the dishwasher.
Explain as "Lightin's it up for da homies". Wink often.
KA-CHING!

NO! Seriously, there's scholarships that have nothing to do with
scholarship or athletics. Your financial aid office will have a big
book of them. Rich people set these things up to reward corvette-
lovers, descendents of lion-tamers, there's one for every kind of
ethnic group, hobbies, diseases you might have, if you pick a weird
major - there'll be some kook who wants to pay for your schoolin' in
it, etc. You won't get every one you apply for, but if you can get
book money, hey. Everybody thinks,"I'm dumb, I don't get no
skullerchip!" so the money sits there. Also, if you get scholarships,
you can put that on your resume, like anyone will care, but the page
is made less blank by that.
Loans must be repaid and repayment begins sooner than you'd like and
the payments are bigger than you're going to want. Debt is bad,
unless you get to own a house at the end of it.
Life lesson: College is expensive, let someone else pay for it.

I have no joke here, I just like saying, "LISTEN VERY CAREFULLY TO
THIS MAN."
No way in hell I'm borrowing another cent for school ever again.

Heh. A few years back I dated a man with spina bifida. He had a very peculiar
sense of humor - he was in the marching band. Steered the wheelchair with the
left hand, played trumpet with the right. Did that for 5 years. Loved it.
Anyway, he was looking for a scholarship to college. Found one for people 6'4
and over. Went to the scholarship office and said, "I'd like to apply for this
scholarship." They asked him, nervously, how tall he was. He said, "Well take
me outta this chair, lay me end to end, and let's find out!"
He was 4 feet tall.

I went to a CHEEP state school and got a scholarship that paid for more
than half of it, and the string attached was that I had to stay in the
state, which I was doing to go to the cheap school ANYWAY.
And THEN I skipped over the border and went to the fancy expensive school
only then I was a TA so the rich kids' daddies PAID for MY KRAFT MACARONI
AND CHEESE, which, admittedly, I cooked a lot of on a hot plate while
living in a basement.
And now I have a big fancy degree and a good job and NO COLLEGE DEBT.
Not a cent! KA-CHING! So long, SUCKERS!
This is the part where I grin and a pointy glint of light appears on my
front teeth.
Anyway, I think that this is the correct order in which to do things.

Unless you're a STOOPID DUMB HEAD like me who went to the CHEEP school for one(1) semester
and dropped out due to the fact that you twook four classes and only passed algeBRA with
a D-- and faileded all the rest of the classes including Psych, which requires you to be
a total HEAD CASE to fail.
Of course now I'm scouting for bands putting out new albums who need cover art for their
SEE DEEs and such.
Also, if anyone is looking for STRIKING, STUNNING semi-abstract art for whatever reason,
you could get ahold of me and maybe get a price quote cuz I'm PO' and need to pay for my car.
This has been a useless sob story.

Me 2! Only in my case it was by accumulating scholarships left'n'right...
There -are- some out there that you get by passing tests, and I got a few
of them. Which I guess kept them out of the hands of -seriously- deranged
people, considering some of the tests. I finished up with an NSF grant,
which I had _not_ expected to get and only applied for for some other
money-related reason I can't remember now (extension on filing returns?
let me check 'have applied for NSF grant' on some other form? It's lost
now...)...
>Anyway, I think that this is the correct order in which to do things.
Yes. Get into your debt after you're -out- of college, the way _I_ did!
