Small bits of suspense in monster movies

recent monster movie she'd made, coming across a bit like Cynthia
Rothrock minus the martial arts. I'd liked her character, tho the movie
itself was pretty thin gruel.)
In monster movies especially, there are many built-in character and plot
bits that get to be resolved in addition to the main "Who lives and who
dies?" main question. Placing these bits, from their build-ups to their
resolutions, is a way to help pace the larger suspenses.
So I thought I'd start a list:
* Is she a screamer or will she get pissed off? Or maybe one and then
the next? This is always something one wonders about any woman placed
into play.** Generally, one bets on the pissed off option (and then the
"and DOES something!" sub-option) more the older the woman is.
* Will the cop:
a) actively get in the way
b) passively get in the way
c) try to help but screw things up
d) help, a little
e) be the movie's hero ?
(I love deadpan cop procedural monster movies! I don't even know if
I've seen one; I just know I love them.)
* Who will be the unexpected love interest, and of whom or what?
** These are monster movies, not reality. They're generally sexist by
nature, unless deliberately otherwise.

mention of cops getting in the way just reminded me again of Deputy
Winston from Cabin Fever and his five pounds of dingaling meat. Best

The older you are, the newer that meme seems. AFAICT it pretty much
started in _Alien_.

Dan Akroyd as Joe Friday in Dragnet practically defines the deadpan
cop genre. No actual monster as such though. He played _Ghostbusters_
more or less straight, but not a cop and all.

Friday the 13th seems to be the perfect day to mention yet another
monster movie remake; The Tingler. Yeah, the Vincent Price "horror
movie" with the creepy little rubber Giger-ish spinal parasite. (For
the SF aficionados among us, the Tingler is reminiscent of a
Mesklinite, no?)
Watched that at home as a kid, my mom in a straight-backed wooden
chair, me on the floor. During the "theater scene", while the critter
is crawling up the chair leg, I ran my fingertips up my mom's ankle.
She damn near had to be peeled off the ceiling.
But then, women in such moobies were pretty much typecast as victims/
damsels in distress at the time.
