.c The Associated Press
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - The ``long, hard slog'' in Iraq that Donald H. Rumsfeld
foresees from his third-floor office on the Potomac comes into even clearer
focus along the Tigris and Euphrates - in the tallies of attacks, in the toll
of American dead, in the cold eyes of many Iraqis.
Statistics tell one story: In recent weeks, the daily average of attacks on
U.S. forces has stepped up to 25 or 26, and even to 35 on one day, from around
20.
Those Iraqi eyes tell a deeper one, in such places as Fallujah, where 82nd
Airborne Division troops came under attack every day this week, and where the
main crossroads is adorned with graffiti proclaiming, ``Fallujah will be the
graveyard of Americans.''
``Whenever they enter Fallujah, they'll be attacked,'' one angry resident told
a reporter. The fact that he was a policeman may give Americans some insight
into the quandary their forces face in parts of Iraq.
Rumsfeld, the U.S. defense secretary, wrote in a memo last week that the United
States can ``win in Afghanistan and Iraq,'' but ``it will be a long, hard
slog.'' His deputy, Paul Wolfowitz, flew to Iraq on Friday for a three-day
visit to take another look at just how long and hard it might be.
Pentagon officials say Wolfowitz has pushed to realign hundreds of millions of
dollars in spending to meet the needs on the ground in Iraq - getting better
body armor to the troops, for example, and more armored Humvees.
But such steps will not be a ``silver bullet,'' Lt. Gen. Norton Schwartz,
Pentagon operations director, acknowledged in Washington.
There's no simple answer because there's no single enemy.
The U.S.-led occupation army faces harassing attacks from a shadowy array of
Iraqi and possibly foreign foes - die-hard Sunni Muslim loyalists of the
toppled Baathist government, other Iraqi nationalists who want the Americans
out, terror bombers who may be driven by Islamic fanaticism. In Shiite Muslim
areas, the Americans have an uneasy, sometimes bloody coexistence with the
armed militias of clerical factions.
A ``win'' doesn't appear at hand on any side.
Even in a string of spectacular suicide bombings that left considerable
physical evidence, investigators apparently are stymied. ``We do not have a
case,'' Schwartz said.
Whole regions of Iraq are relatively peaceful, enabling the 101st Airborne
Division in the northern city of Mosul, for example, to shift troops from the
city to the Iraqi countryside. But even there, division commander Maj. Gen.
David H. Petraeus says the Americans are ``in a race to win the hearts and
minds of the Iraqi people.''
Those hearts appear hardest in an arc of territory stretching from north of
Baghdad to the west, and none are harder than in Fallujah, the Euphrates River
city 35 miles west of the capital. Hit-and-run guerrilla attacks by roadside
bombs and rocket-propelled grenades have bloodied the Americans there
repeatedly in recent weeks.
The U.S. command in Baghdad says it has changed tactics in the past two months,
since a brigade of the tough 82nd Airborne was added to the western zone,
backed by a borrowed battalion of heavy tanks.
``We're taking the fight to the enemy'' by doing more aggressive patrolling,
command spokesman Lt. Col. George Krivo said. ``The level of presence is a lot
higher. You can conduct many, many more operations.''
Many more operations appears to be drawing more attacks. ``That's our purpose
out there,'' to ``engage,'' said the overall U.S. commander here, Lt. Gen.
Ricardo Sanchez.
As for hearts and minds, ``most people in the area, given the right approach,
will support the future of Iraq,'' Krivo said.
Whether the 82nd Airborne's aggressive approach is the right one remains to be
seen.
During a first tour in Fallujah earlier in the year, the division killed 20
Iraqis in two demonstrations, and when the division returned last month, its
paratroopers killed eight Fallujah policemen in an incident still under
investigation. Just this week, 82nd Airborne soldiers were accused of coldly
shooting an Iraqi detainee dead, a charge disputed by the division, and were
caught on camera beating a truck driver in Fallujah.
When townspeople dance on bombed U.S. vehicles in Fallujah, they may be
remembering such incidents.
On his visit, Wolfowitz is said to be looking beyond ``taking the fight to the
enemy,'' toward turning the fight over to Iraqi allies. But ``Iraq-ization'' is
going slowly: Although thousands of Iraqi police have been deployed, they're
often underequipped and poorly trained, and only one 700-man battalion of a new
Iraqi army has been trained.
``It's difficult work,'' Rumsfeld said of Iraq. ``It won't be over anytime
soon.''
Iraq has been liberated. It now enjoys a free press, basic human rights are
observed, and an oppressive socialist military regime has been removed.
Basra has power 24/7. Under Saddam the juice was only turned on for a
couple of hours a day.
BTW - The Iraqi nation has never been and is not now 'united' in a 'true war
of liberation'. What is happening is more and more Iraqis are coming to see
the American's for what they really are, peole who simply wanted to bring
the gift of democracy to an Islamic/Socialist hellhole.
That is wonderful news... Is their any updates to this... I havent had much
time to look for specifics...
<peole who simply wanted to bring
>the gift of democracy to an Islamic/Socialist hellhole.

Iraq was strictly a secular country.

Umm - the 'millions of children' is a lie on the level of '4000 jews didn't
show up'. And don't be quoting Madeline Albright - there has never been any
independent verification of the information in Leslie stahl's question or
the UN report.
I saw a wonderful little puff peice on the US soldiers who were teaching
Iraqi orphans how to play touch football. And of course there are the
countless stories of people benefitting from the freedoms they now enjoy.

No actually, there were many things about Iraq which allow it to be called
'Islamic'] even though it wasn't concerned with 'Shariah Law' like some of
its neighbors are. One of them was an unelected leader who saw a need to
expand his borders.
A united Arabia. Its been the central goal of the Baath party since its
inception.
Boy, you got shit for brains.
What about the WMD?????
So what? Izz has been doing it for 40 years.
What about the books by professors you were going to list for us? Worry
about your own words before you worry about the words of someone else.
(With extreme hesitiation I ask...) What's Izz?
You've obviously never had a nice glass of sherry or a tasty piece of
crunchy bacon, then. There is nothing tastier than pig-meat.
What I don't like about Muslims like you is that you hate people like me for
the food we eat. I hope you never take over the world, so that we have to
eat what you want us to eat instead of what *we* want to eat. As the
Chinese have the largest population on the planet, I guess I don't have to
worry, since their favourite meat is pork.
Speaking of greed-driven, just pop into Harrods in London some time, and see
those Arab wives with their face masks on, purchasing the most expensive
fabrics they can (ca. £500 per metre) to take home and get made up into nice
dresses that nobody will ever see (except their husbands, who don't care
anyway, 'cos they're out in some gambling club with popsies).
See, we can all be just as prejudiced as you.
s.
I haven't done anything recently so it must be Israel.
BTW. Harrods is owned by Arabs, did you
know?
So much for your 'war on Islam' rhetoric - eh?
You must be hallucinating..... AGAIN.
I never promised to list any books by professors.
When are you going to stop lying.
Is it a genetic thing.... Oh, wait I remember now, the
Talmud says it's OK to to gentiles.
I WILL provide you some names of US University
profs who disagree with the actions of Izz.
I will provide two names for every ONE you can name
that agrees with Izz.
I'm waiting.
Oh, comeon. Put your thinking cap on.
Think real hard.
So all the contractions and land concessions, pull outs and peace deals mean
they are expansionist and have been for 40 years?
Dude, you really need to read some real history books.
Yes yes....we're all jews....even the people listening in on your phone
conversations. Did you know Carnivore flagged you years ago and my little
cabal of Talmud reading buddies are monitoring all your electronic
correspondence.
Ooops...maybe I shouldn't have said that.
> I WILL provide you some names of US University
> profs who disagree with the actions of Izz.
No you won't - you never have and you clearly can't.
> I will provide two names for every ONE you can name

> I'm waiting.
Sure pal - I've been down this road with you. Your next step will be to
demand I post their entire resume and verify they are who I say they are.
You first. Gimme a name of a professor you have read about the ME issue.

If you had ever taken a real history course, you wouldn't be such
a dumbass.
Pick up your phone and call a major university professor. Ask him
or her what they think about the conflict and who the agressors are.
Nah..... you really don't care and you would most likely just call
them liberal, huh?
She dances and does the wiggle dance.
That's because she knows I am right.
Most University professors who teach history
related courses know the truth about Israel.
They are well aware of who the indigenous people were of Palestine.
They are well aware of the propaganda that Israel was attacked in
1967. (didn't happen)
They are well aware of the almost daily human rights violations.
They are well aware of the agendas of those that control the country
of Israel.
So go peddle your smoke up someone else's arse.
Just go look at some maps.
Were those guys anti-sematic 60 years ago?
More than a year old, and every one of their concerns never came to pass.
LOL!

> Nah..... you really don't care and you would most likely just call

You're an idiot.
Do you always LOL when you are high?
The activities of Israel over the last six months have not escalated?
The act of building the Nazi fence throughout the Palestinian land
(the remaining 22%), is effectively making a Palestinian state an
impossibility. (Their OBJECTIVE).
Are you really this stupid? If you still have doubts.... contact
some of these ISRAELI PROFESSORS !!!
Try and stay focused. Israel has not been 'expansionary' - and the fence
isn't an act of expansion. Israel already owns the west bank, and despite
what the Palestinian 'press' says, its legal ownership. You could say
Israel is expanionary if they were threatening their neighbors. They
aren't.
No, Iraq had a secular dictator who pretended to be a pious Muslim
