Malise Ruthven's Very Short Introduction contains essential insights into issues such as why Islam has such major divisions between movements such as the Shi'ites, the Sunnis and the Wahhabis, and the central importance of the Shar'ia (Islamic law) in Islamic life. It also offers fresh perspectives on contemporary questions: Why is the greatest 'Jihad' (holy war) now against the enemies of Islam, rather than the struggle against evil? Can women find fulfilment in Islamic societies? How must Islam adapt as it confronts the modern world?

>Islam features widely in the news, often in its most militant versions, but tew people in the non-Muslim world really understand the nature of Islam.

Islam is being represented by violent, murderous thugs who attack with
premeditated savagery, the very people who have the same faith as
their murderers.
The profound silence from the majority of Islamic followers about the
savage methods used by those terrorists who murder fellow Muslims,
tells the rest of the story.
Peaceful Muslims should be at the forefront of civilized people
protesting the actions of the terrorist Muslims.
The truth is that peaceful Muslims are afraid to defend themselves
against the terrorist actions of fundamentalist Muslims. This fear
makes them hide in silence just as the people of Germany did when
Hitler commanded them. This is much worse now, because the problem is
global, not confined to one country.
The end result of Muslim terrorism will be the same as with Hitler's
attempts to dominate the world.
Islam will fall. It's leaders will be condemned. People of the world
will look into their history books and see that Islam has fallen due
to it's savage, primitive behavior.
It's happening already. Go to the streets and ask people randomly:
"What do you think of Islam and it's current actions in the world?"
The answers will open your eyes.
Most people are just tired of hearing about the savagery of Islam and
the terroristic actions of the radical fundamentalists. They are tired
to the point of declaring an end to Islam as a whole.
The silent majority of Islam's representative peaceful faction need to
express themselves forcefully, publicly and loudly against the actions
of the terrorists who profess to act on their behalf.
Failure to do so will be one of the largest portions of the cause of
Islam's downfall.

If it looks like shit, smells like shit, do I really need to taste it?
I couldn't agree with you more. Why don't the majority of Muslims (who, we
are told, are peace-loving), especially those living in "our" western
countries, stand up and say they deplore the actions of the hot-headed
terrorist minority? Until they stand up and say NO, no non-Muslim will
trust them.
