The poet Benjamin Zephaniah was recently awarded an OBE Officer of the
Order of the British Empire), but he publicly refused to accept it.
He said, “I get angry when I hear that word "empire"; it reminds
me of slavery, it reminds of thousands of years of brutality, it
reminds me of how my foremothers were raped and my forefathers
brutalised.”
Author, Hari Kunzru, also recently rejected a Ł5,000 literary prize,
branding its newspaper sponsors as anti-migrants. Mr Kunzru turned
down the John Llewellyn Rhys award for his novel The Impressionist,
objecting to the Mail on Sunday's backing for the prize.
He said, "As the child of an immigrant, I am only too aware of the
poisonous effect of the Mail's editorial line. The atmosphere of
prejudice it fosters translates into violence, and I have no wish to
profit from it."
He said its "hostility towards black and Asian people" was
unacceptable and asked for the prize money to be instead donated to
the Refugee Council charity.
In another incident, a group of Muslims in South Africa publicly
rejected an invitation from the American consulate to join them in
breaking their fast on the last day of Ramadan. Last year, US missions
around the world had taken this initiative to boost ties with Muslims.
Prominent members of Durban’s Muslim community who were invited
not only turned down the invitation but also issued strong statements
condemning America's foreign policy.
They said they didn't want to be part of a photo opportunity and
public relations campaign with people representing a government
conducting an anti-Muslim policy.
"In the light of the Americans' aggression in Iraq, as well as their
financing of the apartheid wall in Palestine, we don't think we can
sit and eat with them," said Naeem Jeenah, president of Muslim Youth
Movement.
The above are all examples of people who have realised the true goals
of the western institutions and regimes. Not only that, but they have
decided to openly disassociate themselves from these institutions and
regimes, to make a bold point and statement to the rest of society.
Muslims in Britain can take note of such tactics, and take every
opportunity to publicly show their distaste and disapproval for the
actions of the western governments in the Muslim lands. They should
publicly refuse to shake the hands of government ministers, and should
refuse to participate in opportune photo shoots, especially in the
Masjid’s and community centres. Muslims should reject publicly
the token peerages and honours that they now receive annually, and
should not allow the government to claim it acts in their interests,
or that the British troops are indeed their troops.
These would be the actions of a community of people fully aware of the
political games that are being played with them. These would also be
the actions of a proud, dignified and honourable community, who speak
the truth and act in the interests of Islam first and foremost.
> The Muslims In The UK Must Take A Stand Against The Oppressors.
Yes, take a stand by leaving the UK and going back to your islamic country.
That will show them you are really a muslim.
