LAHORE: A man slaughtered a girl after her parents did not agree to their
marriage in Shafiqabad police precincts on Thursday. According to police, the
accused, Irshad, wanted to marry Shamim and had been asking her parents for a
long time. The girl’s father, Malik Fazal Elahi, a resident of Bund Road,
refused to get his daughter married to him. On Wednesday, he entered the girl’s
house in the absence of other family members. Upon his failure to convince her
for marriage, Irshad attacked her with a dagger and slit her throat. Shafiqabad
police has registered the complaint against the accused and have started the
investigation. The police also sent the body to the morgue for autopsy.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has given an emotional apology to the
country's Forgotten Australians, many of whom have gathered at
Parliament House in Canberra today.

Almost 1,000 men and women travelled from around Australia to hear Mr
Rudd and Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull apologise for the abuse,
neglect and suffering they endured in foster care and orphanages
between the 1920s and 1970s.

Many have come to Canberra in groups or with their families, and have
spent the morning in Parliament House's marble foyer speaking about
their experiences as children ahead of the apology.

Addressing the crowd who gathered in the Great Hall, Mr Rudd said the
nation looked back in shame that so many children were left cold,
hungry and alone.

"We come together today to deal with an ugly chapter of our nation's
history and we come together today to offer our nation's apology," he
said.

"To you, the Forgotten Australians and those who were sent to our
shores as children without their consent ... we are sorry.

"Sorry that as children you were taken from your families and placed
in institutions where you were so often abused, sorry for the physical
suffering, the emotional starvation, and the cold absence of love of
tenderness of care.

"Sorry for the tragedy, the absolute tragedy of childhoods lost,
childhoods spent instead in austere and authoritarian places where
names were replaced by numbers."

Amid loud cheers from the audience Mr Rudd said the apology
represented a turning point for country to ensure the horrors are
never repeated.

"The truth is a great evil has been done," he said.

Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull said the apology had the
unqualified support of the Opposition and almost broke down while
recounting stories he had heard from survivors of abuse.

"Today is your day," Mr Turnbull told the crowd.

"Today we acknowledge that with broken hearts and breaking spirits you
were left in the custody - you can hardly call it care - of too many
people whose abuse and neglect of you ... made a mockery of the claim
you were taken from your own family for your own good."

Around 500,000 children, including thousands of child migrants, grew
up in government-run institutions and foster care and many had been
lobbying for for an apology from the Federal Government since it was
recommended by a Senate committee in 2004.

John Hughes came from Collie in Western Australia to hear today's
apology and was keen to speak about what happened to him as a child.

He spent eight years in Menzies Boys Home in Frankston, Victoria,
several years in foster care and only went to school for two years.

"There's a million things I could tell you and you wouldn't be able to
write it in the paper," he said.

John says he had his legs broken, face put over a gas stove, was
stabbed, and had a foster mother who used to hit him in the head with
a swing.

His extremely traumatic childhood resulted in several suicide attempts
but John says his involvement in sport and raising a family have kept
him going during his adult life.

"Sports kept me alive and then when I married my wife she's been just
absolutely wonderful and I just feel so proud that I've married a
woman like that," he said.

"I brought my kids up with respect, they all went to school properly.

While John is pleased to hear the apology he says it should have been
delivered by the Queen.

"She's the one that sent over the immigrants over here and she sent
over all the superintendents from Ireland - they're the ones who
abused us."

Despite today's apology, the Government has already ruled out paying
compensation.
