I recently bought two pieces of sandalwood wood: One from a marketplace
in Mumbai, and one from a seller in the alleys of the great Vishwanath
Temple in Varanasi. Both sellers said the piece they were selling was
sandalwood. I want to use it to make chandan on a chandan stone. Both
faintly smell of sandalwood.
One is light grey, and is softer. The chandan paste forms quite
quickly.
The other piece is a much lighter colour, and harder. It takes a
heavier grinding action to make the paste.
My question: Is there some sort of test to verify which one, if either,
is an authentic piece of sandalwood? Fake pieces are everywhere, and
can be just another piece of wood, with a few drops of sandalwood oil
added to fool the buyer.
I will say, that it could be that both pieces are authentic, but that
they came from a different part of the tree, and hence have different
colour shades, and different densities.
Thanks, if anyone can help.
