Response:
The name Thot instead of Thoth
Hello Steve,
I found this rendering of the name Thot instead of Thoth most interesting. I
guess Thot would be Sir Alan Gardner's rendition of the name.
I'm the author of the Resurrect Isis website, www.resurrectisis.org. My
website argues for a much different interpretation of history than the usual
academic or "mythology" interpretations. My arguments are based largely on
my own discovery of "Thothian linguistics."
Long ago, in my teens, before I ever became a Pagan, I secretly believed
that the serpentine sound and serpentine shape of the letter S had to be
related. I secretly believed that our word "thought" had to be related to
the name of "Thoth," the god of wisdom and learning. I was raised on the
same phonetic theory of the alphabet and the same dictionaries of Greek and
Latin etymologies as everyone else was. But even though the established
authorities contradicted my ideas, I secretly believed them anyway. The Thot
rendition of the name instead of Thoth, had I known of it, would have
strengthened by beliefs even further.
Many years later, I discovered that our so called "phonetic" alphabet is
pictographic. It was not an academic discovery. It came in a spontaneous
flash of light or insight. The letters of our alphabet are a set of Pagan
religious icons derived directly from Egyptian religion and art. Each letter
of the Roman alphabet has a page of its own on the Resurrect Isis website
that illustrates and explains its pictographic origins and relationship to
Pagan religion.
From that, I discovered "Thothian linguistics." Thoth was the "scribe of the
gods." Thoth was the "inventor of writing and of numbers." It was "Thoth who
first taught men to speak clearly." And "Assur gave names to things which
formerly had none." Western academia has dismissed all of these claims as
nonsense. Obviously, scribes of the Thoth school did a lot of work on
languages long before there was a Western academia.
In the "Thothian" system of linguistics, scribes of the Thoth school used
the pictographic meanings of letters and the names of gods to create words
and give them meaning. Our languages didn't simply evolve from animal grunts
and gestures in the primeval forest; they're partly the products of
intentional design. For instance, our syllable re- as in redo, reset,
reaffirm, and so on derives its sound from the name of Re, the sun god, and
derives its meaning from the repetitive risings and settings of the sun.
Isis was the goddess of medicine and healing. We see her name in the -osis
suffix in dozens of medical terms like diagnosis, prognosis, psychosis, and
so on. In the "Thothian" system of linguistics, the name of Isis occurs in
thousands of words and names, and many other gods and goddesses do as well.
In addition to alphabet pages, three is a "Visual Language" page on the
Resurrect Isis website that carries on this discussion at further length.
Thoth was also the "inventor of numbers." Our so called "Arabic" number set
is also a set of Pagan religious icons. Each of the ten numbers has a page
of its own on the Resurrect Isis website that illustrates its pictographic
origin and discusses its relationship to Egyptian religion. The "Number 6"
page deals specifically with Thoth. Check out these pages.
Respectfully,
Will Moore

> PRAYER to THOT
> Come to me Thot, O noble Ibis,
> O God who loves Khmun;
> O letter-writer of the Ennead,
> Great one who dwells in Heliopolis!
> Come to me and give me counsel,
> Make me skillful in your calling;
> Better is your calling than all callings,
> It makes followers great.
> He who masters your calling is fit to hold office,
> I have seen many benefit by your action;
> They are now among the Tribunal of Thirty,
> They are strong and rich through your help.
> You are the one who offers wisest counsel,
> I am a servant of your house.
> Let me tell of your valiant deeds,
> Wheresoever I may be.
> Then the multitudes will say:
> "Great are they, the deeds of Thot!"
> Then they'll come and bring their children,
> To assign them to your calling,
> A calling that pleases the lord of strength,
> Happy are they who perform it!
