The Archdruid of Ireland
Of particular interest to readers of Sid's story will be the first
battles for Stonehenge, described in detail here, before modern Druids
led by Rollo Maughfling and Arthur Pendragon took on the leadership of
the battle.
Sid never has described himself as a Druid.
Yet, as you read on, you will find that he is the quintessential Druid
of England in the 20th century.

This time another friend and eventual Inspirer of the Irish Druids
afterwards in Dublin, Bill "Ubi" Dwyer, the "Ubi" being short for
"Ubique", the Latin for "Everywhere", Thus Bill "Ubi" Dwyer means Bill
"Who-is-Everywhere" Dwyer, like God, omnipresent. Unfortunately, Bill
is not "anywhere" on Earth now, he's dead ! He died in Dublin back in
1999, bless him always.

on the Hill of tara for Midsummer 1999, and prophesied that it would

OF COURSE REAL DRUIDS DO NOT LOOK ANYTHING LIKE THIS,
BUT IN !980-82 AT STONEHENGE IN ENGLAND THEY DIDN'T KNOW.

The Druids pictured here at Stonehenge would have been Druids of the
Universal Bond (now defunct). Most of them would not have been full
Druids at all, but would have used spotless white bedsheets and gotten
the seamstress busy for the trip to Stonehenge.

I liked Sids way of waffling, always very entertaining and
educational,
1971, wow i was 18 and already stonehengeaholic.
I feel honoured to have watched that story unfold before me.
have not spoken with Sid for years.
Arthur P, seems to carry the banner well , I remember when he was
first
introduced to me regarding adding Warband to the access team.
Late 88, it was a bad time for the caretakers at Stonehenge, 24hr
harassment.
Try as the police might they could not, force,or trick anyone into
breaking the law.
As you know, they solved that little problem by changing the law and
criminalising
4 million people at the stroke of a pen.
It may seem as if we have access at the summer solstice, however its
nothing
to be proud of as e/heritage make it as uncomfortable and dangerous
as possible.
We are at the beginning of resolving the problem but it was stalled
for years because
of e/h intransigence.
Arthur is on a 24hr one king picket of Stonehenge, and has been since
June(GriN)
E/h say he has a problem with his visitors, he says he has no problem
at all(LOL)

How is it my fault? I had been at the henge for 5 days living in
hedges
What a cheek, the late wife of Rollo, Jackie gave me a lovely white
tunic so the "druids" would not be scared of me, it was bound to get a
bit
rustic and careworn .

Apologies, not by fault, but you'll have to hunt around the website
piecing the fragments of Sid Rawle together. But you'll get the hang
of Sid's attitude. I remember when with him that he never mentioned
Druids, but always spoke our language and described our thoughts as he
rambled along. Sid never really planned anything though more happened
to him than to anybody else I ever knew ! He always seemed to pay
attention only to those around him at any particular moment, though
his mind would often seem to be far away. He didn't like dope/drugs of
any kind, but there wasn't much he could do about it as the heads
around him just ignored his pleas. He was also a veggie, still is. He
prracticed polygamy openy but never preached it ! He was simply
worshipped by pop and rock stars of the time, notably John Lennon,
Mick Jagger and the Rolling Stones too.
He practiced what he preached and finally led battles against the
Police at Stonehenge in 1984 and 1985, if I remember correctly,
retiring from the frontline to give on-the-spot TV News interviews
with blood pouring all over his face ! Much is made about Stonehenge
Battlechieftain King Arthur Pendragon who came afterwards, but Arthur
was no Sid Rawle and never battled with the Police - though the Police
had two British Army regiments on standby in case Arthur rioted like
Sid - Arthur never did. Today Arthur Pendragon is not a Druid but a
self-proclaimed Gardnerian Wiccan. Sid Rawle remains a Druid though he
never proclaimed himself anything, not even "King of the Hippies",
that was done spontaneously by 40,000 followers at the Hyde Park Free
Open Air Concert in Hyde Park in Central London, 1969.
Sid really never spoke of Hippies. He always spoke of and organised
the Diggers Action Movement in modern times, which goes back a couple
of centuries in English history, and as a Digger he really blundered
at first into the Hippie Scene in 1960's England.
Of course I'd have Sid Rawle a million times over in preference to
Arthur. Sid was deep, intelligent, courteous and kind with never a
thought for himself. You don't get many like Sid Rawle today, perhaps
Rollo Maughfling, Archdruid of Stonehenge, Glastonbury and England.

I don't like the way Arthur's crowd go on about him being a "hard
man", he's not. I know he's been down there at Stonehenge since June,
probably drying out (Grin). The warband is dwindling, few if any like
them in Ireland - and I gather it's the same in England. They really
have no ideas, no philosophy, indeed no ideals except shining in
Arthur's light, and that's dwindling fast. He's a good fellow but
doesn't have an ounce of Sid's charisma or clear-eyed appeal. And Sid

all he could drink as he marvelled at the drinking prowess of us
Paddies around him ! He usually came along with me to a little pub
around the corner in Chalk Farm to escape the marijuana smokers
sitting cross-legged in circle on his floor. He did become enraged one
night when we arrived back to see his dog stoned through the thick
smoke in his livingroom, the little terrier on his back with all four
legs stiff up in the air !!! The hashish smoke had overcome the poor
dog, but thankfully he was alright and came to after a week or so.

I liked Sid a lot, you describe him well,
However he would be unhappy if people believe he led battles in 84 and
85.
I do not know of a picture of sid with blood on his face?
Sid was not at the Beanfield having failed to persuade a number of
people not
to go at that moment, he stayed at Savernake forest.
You may have seen a picture of him with his hair pulled strangely
accross his
head with odd marks.
That was a result of lighting his beard by accident, proper blaze by
all accounts.
Rollo AD Stonehenge, bless him, along with the late Tim Sebastian AD
Wiltshire,
and Jackie AD Avebury,changed my life from an amazing one to a mind
bogglingly
amazing one, so did Sid.
Arthur is no Sid, for sure. Sid was like a mother.
I overlook Arthur's eeeer "way" of doing things, because i like a bit
of colour.LOL
I have always had reservation's re him, but as Stonehenge is not a
Church,
Its a path way, that all may walk.

I suppose the difference between them is that to Sid, Stonehenge was
part of it but not at all the complete picture, whereas Arthur is
obsessed with Stonehenge. Sid always played down being a "King" of
anything, that title was just so much baggage to him that the media
and admirers kept playing up. Sid didn't want or need crowds around
him, though Arthur revels in numbers. Above all, Sid fed thousands in
his time and got them roofs over their heads, Arthur does not see the
need for a house for himself - he still has No Fixed Abode !

King of the hippies was a derogatory term invented a tabloid for a
head line.
because the people love a good laugh, we would poke fun at Sid with
it.
He loathed it.
He may still have links with rainbow 2000 who have a site.
King Canute gave a speech at Stonehenge we clapped and cheered
him as well. Those were the days.
As for Arthur, no, he is not into housing, but does focus protest
well.
He has many interests out side of Stonehenge and suffers
a lot from what i call "The Face" condition.
People get him mixed up with some "Myth" created by others.
I often hear people explaining what they think he means(LOL)
Its like Chinese whispers, the news papers don't help.

You're right, when I was with him, back in 1974, Sid always introduced
himself simply as a "Digger". Nobody in his company ever called him
"king" oranything like that. When he took a walk, evenings, he always
wore a heavy black cloak that suited his red hair perfectly, he never
wore that cloak ostentatiously, it was simply part of him. Now I'm
digging around and getting sightings of Sid hear and there, Bristol in
2000, then making a complaint to the Advertising Authority over a bank
using an old image of him at Stonehenge on an advertising poster. Sid
would never get along with a mass of regimented white robes, though
he's more Druid than the lot of them put together ! But if he did
happen to wander around to Stonehenge and saw Arthur protesting there
alone, he would join him !!!

Just found a pic of sid and others including me, festival and pyramid
stage in background,
proceeding towards the stones with a crowd.He is playing a drum and
and a whistler accompanies.
Its got a guy holding a flag pole thing in it, the pic is well
circulated. not sure of year.

Jim, seems surprised that Stonehenge festival people experimented with
drugs.
All this drug addiction must be down to Stonehengers LOL.
Drugs were not the problem, "ignorance was and is".
Thats what Wally Hope died of,
He died a victim of ignorance, I suspect he is more famous regarding
Stonehenge
than Sid, and Wally will be the one history builds the myth around.

some people claim its just someone looking for a dog. (lol)

We called ourself Wally, because the Stonehenge eviction notice was

Suddenly there were about 15 Wallies and they could only evict the

I will tell you about Boris and Doris the geese one day, They had
