Volcanic activity as an example of earth's interior being ferociously
and eternally hot has been available since well before mankind even
existed as mankind.

And the Christian myth of hell follows from all sorts or pre-christian
myths of places of departed spirits.

It is my understanding that the Vikings believed in a hell of bleak
and bitter cold.
