And to have the killers and torturers defended and praised by our jewish
neighbours is a little to much cheek turning.

Of course our fellow christians in israel find the disgusting dictatorial
zionist jewish indiscriminate shooting of christian young men and women who
are unarmed, tied and blindfolded. The stoning of children going to school.
The barbarism of the state of israel is a return to Roman times of Nero and
Caligula. And the rulers seem to be just as unbalanced.Unfortunately
christian young are not spiritless and resent being pushed around for no
reason except greed by jews.

Under the nazis our christian young stood up for, helped and assisted jews

Sir Nevile Henderson, British Ambassador in Berlin, 'said further that
the
hostile attitude in Great Britain was the work of Jews and enemies of
the
Nazis, which was what Hitler thought himself." (Taylor, AJP: The
Origins of
the Second World War Penguin 1965, 1987 etc p 324).

Is all of this merely attributable to antisemitism?

The economic background to the war is necessary for a fuller
understanding,
before casting judgement on the originators of these viewpoints.

At the end of the First World War, Germany was essentially tricked
[see Paul
Johnson "A History of the Modern World" (1983) p24 and H Nicholson
Peacemaking 1919 (1933) pp13-16] into paying massive reparations to
France
and other economic competitors and former belligerent countries in
terms of
the so-called Treaty of Versailles, thanks to the liberal American
President
Woodrow Wilson. Germany was declared to be solely responsible for the
war,
in spite of the fact that "Germany did not plot a European war, did
not want
one, and made genuine efforts, though too belated, to avert one."
(Professor
Sydney B Fay The Origins of the World War (vol. 2 p 552)).

� "As a result of these massive enforced financial reparations, by 1923
the
situation in Germany became desperate and inflation on an astronomical
scale
became the only way out for the government. Printing presses were
engaged to
print money around the clock. In 1921 the exchange rate was 75 marks
to the
dollar. By 1924 this had become about 5 trillion marks to the dollar.
This
virtually destroyed the German middle class, reducing any bank savings
to a
virtual zero." (Koestler The God that Failed p 28)

According to Sir Arthur Bryant the British historian (Unfinished
Victory
(1940 pp. 136-144):

"It was the Jews with their international affiliations and their
hereditary
flair for finance who were best able to seize such opportunities. They
did
so with such effect that, even in November 1938, after five years of
anti-Semitic legislation and persecution, they still owned, according
to the
Times correspondent in Berlin, something like a third of the real
property
in the Reich. Most of it came into their hands during the inflation.
But to
those who had lost their all this bewildering transfer seemed a
monstrous
injustice. After prolonged sufferings they had now been deprived of
their
last possessions. They saw them pass into the hands of strangers, many
of
whom had not shared their sacrifices and who cared little or nothing
for
their national standards and traditions. The Jews obtained a wonderful
ascendancy in politics, business and the learned professions (in spite
of
constituting) less than one percent of the population. The banks,
including
the Reichsbank and the big private banks, were practically controlled
by
them. So were the publishing trade, the cinema, the theatres and a
large
part of the press all the normal means, in fact, by which public
opinion in
a civilized country is formed. The largest newspaper combine in the
country
with a daily circulation of four millions was a Jewish monopoly. Every
year
it became harder and harder for a gentile to gain or keep a foothold
in any
privileged occupation. At this time it was not the 'Aryans' who
exercised
racial discrimination. It was a discrimination that operated without
violence. It was exercised by a minority against a majority. There was
no
persecution, only elimination. It was the contrast between the wealth
enjoyed and lavishly displayed by aliens of cosmopolitan tastes, and
the
poverty and misery of native Germans, that has made anti-Semitism so
dangerous and ugly a force in the new Europe. Beggars on horseback are
seldom popular, least of all with those whom they have just thrown out
of
the saddle."

Goodness gracious, Sir Arthur! What made you get out of the wrong side
of
the bed?

Strangely enough, a book unexpectedly published by Princeton
University
Press in 1984, Sarah Gordon (Hitler, Germans and the "Jewish
Question")
essentially confirms what Bryant says. According to her, "Jews were
never a
large percentage of the total German population; at no time did they
exceed
1% of the population during the years 1871-1933." But she adds "Jews
were
over-represented in business, commerce, and public and private
service. They
were especially visible in private banking in Berlin, which in 1923
had 150
private Jewish banks, as opposed to only 11 private non-Jewish banks.
They
owned 41% of iron and scrap iron firms and 57% of other metal
businesses.
Jews were very active in the stock market, particularly in Berlin,
where in
1928 they comprised 80% of the leading members of the stock exchange.
By
1933, when the Nazis began eliminating Jews from prominent positions,
85% of
the brokers on the Berlin Stock exchange were dismissed because of
their
'race'. At least a quarter of full professors and instructors (at
German
universities) had Jewish origins. In 1905-6 Jewish students comprised
25% of
the law and medical students. In 1931, 50% of the 234 theatre
directors in
Germany were Jewish, and in Berlin the number was 80%. In 1929 it was
estimated that the per capita income of Jews in Berlin was twice that
of
other Berlin residents." etc etc.

Arthur Koestler confirms the Jewish over-involvement in German
publishing.
"Ullstein's was a kind of super-trust; the largest organization of its
kind
in Europe, and probably In the world. They published four daily papers
in
Berlin alone, among these the venerable Vossische Zeitung, founded in
the
eighteenth century, and the B.Z. am Mittag, an evening paper. Apart
from
these, Ullstein's published more than a dozen weekly and monthly
periodicals, ran their own news service, their own travel agency,
etc., and
were one of the leading book publishers. The firm was owned by the
brothers
Ullstein - they were five, like the original Rothschild brothers, and
like
them also, they were Jews." (The God that Failed (1950) ed. RHS
Crossman, p
31).

Edgar Mowrer, Berlin correspondent for the Chicago Daily News, wrote
an
anti-German tract called Germany Puts the Clock Back (published as a
Penguin
Special and reprinted five times between December 1937 and April
1938). He
nevertheless notes "In the all-important administration of Prussia,
any
number of strategic positions came into the hands of Hebrews. A
telephone
conversation between three Jews in Ministerial offices could result in
the
suspension of any periodical or newspaper in the state. The Jews came
in
Germany to play in politics and administration that same considerable
part
that they had previously won by open competition in business, trade,
banking, the Press, the arts, the sciences and the intellectual and
cultural
life of the country. And thereby the impression was strengthened that
Germany, a country with a mission of its own, had fallen into the
hands of
foreigners."

Mowrer says "No one who lived through the period from 1919 to 1926 is
likely
to forget the sexual promiscuity that prevailed. Throughout a town
like
Berlin, hotels and pensions made vast fortunes by letting rooms by the
hour
or day to baggageless, unregistered guests. Hundreds of cabarets,
pleasure
resorts and the like served for purposes of getting acquainted and
acquiring
the proper mood." (pp. 153-4). Bryant describes throngs of child
prostitutes
outside the doors of the great Berlin hotels and restaurants. He adds
"Most
of them (the night clubs and vice-resorts) were owned and managed by
Jews.
And it was the Jews. among the promoters of this trade who were
remembered
in after years." (pp. 144-5).

Douglas Reed, Chief Central European correspondent before WWII for the
London Times, was profoundly anti-German and anti-Hitler. But
nevertheless
he reported: "I watched the Brown Shirts going from shop to shop with
paint
pots and daubing on the window panes the word 'Jew', in dripping red
letters. The Kurf�rstendamm was to me a revelation. I knew that Jews
were
prominent in business life, but I did not know that they almost
monopolized
important branches of it. Germany had one Jew to one hundred gentiles,
said
the statistics; but the fashionable Kurf�rstendamm, according to the
dripping red legends, had about one gentile shop to ninety-nine Jewish
ones." (Reed Insanity Fair (1938) p. 152-3). In Reed's book Disgrace
Abounding of the following year he notes "In the Berlin (of pre-Hitler
years) most of the theatres were Jewish-owned or Jewish-leased, most
of the
leading film and stage actors were Jews, the plays performed were
often by
German, Austrian or Hungarian Jews and were staged by Jewish film
producers,
applauded by Jewish dramatic critics in Jewish newspapers. The Jews
are not
cleverer than the Gentiles, if by clever you mean good at their jobs.
They
ruthlessly exploit the common feeling of Jews, first to get a foothold
in a
particular trade or calling, then to squeeze the non-Jews out of it.
� It is
not true that Jews are better journalists than Gentiles. They held all
the
posts on those Berlin papers because the proprietors and editors were
Jewish" (pp238-9).

The Jewish writer Edwin Black notes "For example, in Berlin alone,
about 75%
of the attorneys and nearly as many of the doctors were Jewish."
(Black, The
Transfer Agreement (1984) p58.

To cap it all, Jews were perceived as dangerous enemies of Germany
after
Samuel Untermeyer, the leader of the World Jewish Economic Federation,
declared war on Germany on August 6 1933. (Edwin Black The Transfer
Agreement: the Untold Story of the Secret Pact between the Third Reich
and
Palestine (1984) pp272-277) According to Black, "The one man who most
embodied the potential death blow to Germany was Samuel Untermeyer."
(p
369). This was the culmination of a worldwide boycott of German goods
led by
international Jewish organizations. The London Daily Express on March
24,
1933 carried the headline "Judea Declares War on Germany". The boycott
was
particularly motivated by the German imposition of the Nuremberg Laws,
which
ironically were similar in intent and content to the Jewish cultural
exclusivism practiced so visibly in present-day Israel (Hannah Arendt
Eichmann in Jerusalem p 7).

Hitler saw the tremendous danger posed to Germany by Communism. He
appreciated the desperate need to eliminate this threat, a fact that
earned
him the immense hatred and animosity of the Jewish organisations and
the
media and politicians of the west which they could influence. After
all,
according to the Jewish writer Chaim Bermant, although Jews formed
less than
five percent of Russia's population, they formed more than fifty
percent of
its revolutionaries. According to the Jewish writer Chaim Bermant in
his
book The Jews (1977, chapter 8):

"It must be added that most of the leading revolutionaries who
convulsed
Europe in the final decades of the last century and the first decades
of
this one, stemmed from prosperous Jewish families. They were perhaps
typified by the father of revolution, Karl Marx. Thus when, after the
chaos
of World War I, revolutions broke out all over Europe, Jews were
everywhere
at the helm; Trotsky, Sverdlov, Kamenev and Zinoviev in Russia, Bela
Kun in
Hungary, Kurt Eisner in Bavaria, and, most improbable of all, Rosa
Luxemburg
in Berlin.

"To many outside observers, the Russian revolution looked like a
Jewish
conspiracy, especially when it was followed by Jewish-led
revolutionary
outbreaks in much of central Europe. The leadership of the Bolshevik
Party
had a preponderance of Jews. Of the seven members of the Politburo,
the
inner cabinet of the country, four, Trotsky (Bronstein), Zinoviev
(Radomsky), Kamenev (Rosenfeld) and Sverdlov, were Jews." Other
authors
agree with this:

"There has been a tendency to circumvent or simply ignore the
significant
role of Jewish intellectuals in the German Communist Party, and
thereby
seriously neglect one of the genuine and objective reasons for
increased
anti-Semitism during and after World War 1. The prominence of Jews in
the
revolution and early Weimar Republic is indisputable, and this was a
very
serious contributing cause for increased anti-Semitism in post-war
years. It
is clear then that the stereotype of Jews as socialists and
communists. led
many Germans to distrust the Jewish minority as a whole and to brand
Jews as
enemies of the German nation." (Sarah Gordon, "Hitler, Germans and the
Jewish Question", Princeton University Press (1984) p 23).

"The second paroxysm of strong anti-Semitism came after the critical
role of
Jews in International Communism and the Russian Revolution and during
the
economic crises of the 1920s and 30s.. Anti-Semitism intensified
throughout
Europe and North America following the perceived and actual centrality
of
Jews in the Russian Revolution. Such feelings were not restricted to
Germany, or to vulgar extremists like the Nazis. All over Northern
Europe
and North America, anti-Semitism became the norm in 'nice society',
and
'nice society' included the universities." (Martin Bernal, Black
Athena vol.
1 pp. 367, 387).

"The major role Jewish leaders played in the November (Russian)
revolution
was probably more important than any other factor in confirming
(Hitler's)
anti-Semitic beliefs." (J&S Pool, Who Financed Hitler, p.164).

Hitler came to power in Germany with two main aims, the rectification
of the
unjust provisions of the Versailles Treaty, and the destruction of the
Soviet/Communist threat to Germany. Strangely enough, contrary to the
mythology created by those who had an opposing ethnic agenda, he had
no
plans or desire for a larger war of conquest. Professor AJP Taylor
showed
this in his book The Origins of the Second World War, to the
disappointment
of the professional western political establishment. Taylor says, "The
state
of German armament in 1939 gives the decisive proof that Hitler was
not
contemplating general war, and probably not intending war at all"
(p.267),
and "Even in 1939 the German army was not equipped for a prolonged
war; and
in 1940 the German land forces were inferior to the French in
everything
except leadership" (p104-5). What occurred in Europe in 1939-41 was
the
result of unforeseen weaknesses and a tipping of the balance of power,
and
Hitler was an opportunist "who took advantages whenever they offered
themselves" (Taylor). Britain and France declared war on Germany, not
the
other way around. Hitler wanted peace with Britain, as the German
generals
admitted (Basil Liddell Hart, The Other Side of the Hill 1948, Pan
Books
1983) with regard to the so-called Halt Order at Dunkirk, where Hitler
had
the opportunity to capture the entire British Army, but chose not to.
Liddell Hart, one of Britain's most respected military historians,
quotes
the German General von Blumentritt with regard to this Halt Order:

"He (Hitler) then astonished us by speaking with admiration of the
British
Empire, of the necessity for its existence, and of the civilisation
that
Britain had brought into the world. He remarked, with a shrug of the
shoulders, that the creation of its Empire had been achieved by means
that
were often harsh, but 'where there is planing, there are shavings
flying'.
He compared the British Empire with the catholic Church saying they
were
both essential elements of stability in the world. He said that all he
wanted from Britain was that she should acknowledge Germany's position
on
the Continent. The return of Germany's colonies would be desirable but
not
essential, and he would even offer to support Britain with troops if
she
should be involved in difficulties anywhere." (p 200).

According to Liddell Hart, "At the time we believed that the repulse
of the
Luftwaffe in the "Battle over Britain" had saved her. That is only
part of
the explanation, the last part of it. The original cause, which goes
much
deeper, is that Hitler did not want to conquer England. He took little
interest in the invasion preparations, and for weeks did nothing
tospur them
on; then, after a brief impulse to invade, he veered around again and
suspended the preparations. He was preparing, instead, to invade
Russia"
(p140).

David Irving in the foreword to his book The Warpath (1978) refers to
"the
discovery, that at no time did this man (Hitler) pose or intend a real
threat to Britain or the Empire."

This gives a completely different complexion, not only to the war, but
to
the successful suppression of this information during the war and
afterwards. Historians today know only too well where the boundaries
lie
within which they can paint their pictures of the war and its
aftermath, and
the consequences of venturing beyond those boundaries, irrespective of
the
evidence. Unfortunately, only too few of them have been prepared to
have the
courage to break out of this dreadful straitjacket of official and
unofficial censorship.

I worked and studied in Berlin for three years, have an MA in
International Relations and a BA in Government with a minor in
History. I am
embarrassed to say that until I read this article, I had no idea of
the
scope and cause for the anti-Semitism in Germany before WWII. The Halt
Order
at Dunkirk was never mentioned in my studies, nor was the ownership of
the
media, banks and businesses.

Thank you for the excellent article. It certainly gives me a new
perspective. I have always questioned the actual numbers of Jewish
victims
of the concentration camps, as the numbers didn't make sense based
upon
Germany's population. Perhaps it was fear of failing or being labeled
an
anti-Semite by my history professors (all but two were Jewish) and
classmates that I refrained from demanding an honest discussion during
my
classes. I once said that the only reason Israel existed was out of
Holocaust guilt, and I was immediately labeled a terrorist
sympathizer.

I see what is now happening in Israel and I am aghast. The
parallels
to WW II are frightening. Even today, one cannot bring up this subject
without being labeled a Holocaust denier or white supremacist.

Grynszpan was an 17 yr old unemployed Jew who was funded by LICRA (
Jewish activist group ). His father had been a tailor who had moved
from Poland to Germany. Herschel had a reputation for disliking work
and he hung out at the homes of his uncles in Brussels and Paris.

He checked into an expensive hotel just round the corner from the
offices of LICA.

On November 7 1938, Herschel Grynszpan walked into the German embassy
in Paris and shot Ernst vom Rath, a German diplomat, five times.

LICA at once hired one of the foremost barristers in Paris, and paid
his legal costs when he was arrested.

Another assassination

In February 1936 Giafferi represented the Jew David Frankfurter who

shot and killed Wilhelm Gustloff, the head of the Swiss branch of the
German National Socialist Party. During the subsequent trial it was
clearly established that Frankfurter had been a hired murderer with

What Really Happened During the Crystal Night

Provocateurs appear in border towns

Night, strange persons who had never been seen there before suddenly
appeared in several small towns in Hessen near the French-German
border. They went to mayors, Kreisleiters (district Party leaders) and
other important officials in these towns and asked them what actions
were being planned against the Jews. The officials were rather
startled
by these questions and replied that they didn't know of any such
plans.
The strangers acted as if they were shocked to hear this. They shouted
and complained that something had to be done against the Jews and
then,
without further explanation, they disappeared.
They usually regarded the strangers as crazy anti-Semites and promptly
forgot about the incidents - until the next evening. Some of these
apparently crazy individuals really outdid themselves.

Provocateurs dress as SS

SS, went to an SA Standartenfuehrer (Colonel) and ordered him to
destroy the nearby synagogue. To understand the absurdity of this one
must know that the SS and SA were completely separate organizations. A
real SS member would never have tried to give orders to an SA unit.
This case shows that the strangers were foreigners who did not even
understand the distinctions of German authority. The SA
Standartenfuehrer rejected the demands of the self-styled SS men and
reported the incident to his superiors.

Strangers giving speeches

efforts were not working with local officials, they changed their
tactics. Instead they tried to incite directly the people in the
streets. In another town, for example, two men appeared at the market
place and began making speeches to the people there, trying to incite
them against the Jews. Eventually some people did indeed storm the
synagogue, but by then the two provocateurs had, of course,
disappeared. Similar incidents occurred in several towns.
Unidentified strangers suddenly appeared, gave speeches, started
throwing stones at windows, stormed Jewish buildings, schools,
hospitals, and synagogues, and then disappeared.

These unusual incidents had already started on the 8th of November,
that is, before Ernst vom Rath was dead. His death was only reported
late on the evening of the 9th. The fact that this strange pattern of
incidents had already begun one day earlier proves that the death of
vom Rath was not the reason for the Crystal Night outburst. Vom Rath
was still alive when the pogrom began.

These were methodical thugs and not enraged citizens

on the evening of 9 November. Groups of generally five or six young
men, armed with bars and clubs, went down the streets smashing store
windows. They were not Jew-hating SA men, enraged over the murder of a
German diplomat. They operated too methodically to have been motivated
by anger.

They carried out their work without any apparent emotion. Nonetheless,
it was their destruction
that encouraged certain other individuals from the lowest social
classes to become a mob and continue the destruction.

All one can learn from history writers is that "all" synagogues were
demolished and that "all" shop windows were destroyed. Aside from this
vague description, one is given almost no details.

Jews fought off attacks

History writers tell us that during the Crystal Night all the Jews
were
frightened, meekly accepted whatever happened to them and watched the
destruction of their property with no resistance. The contrary is
true.
While going through the files on this subject, I found many documents
which report precisely just the opposite of what is claimed. The fact
is that in many cases Jews and their German neighbors fought together
against the attackers, pushing them down staircases. Street mobs were
beaten up and chased away in more than one case.

Police on side of Jews

SA officers stood watch preventing attacks

Police and Party officials were generally on the side of the Jews.
Some
Jewish community leaders went to police stations the next morning and
asked the police to investigate the damage done to their synagogues.
The resulting police reports are still available in the files today.

Jews weren't phased by attacks

Jews were not directly affected by these events. In Berlin, for
example, all of the teachers and pupils of the city's largest Jewish
school, which served the entire Berlin area, appeared in their classes
the next morning without having noticed anything unusual during the
previous night.

Heinemann Stern, the Jewish principal of that school, wrote in his
postwar memoirs that he noticed a burning synagogue on his way to the
school on the morning after the Crystal Night, but he thought it was
just an accidental fire.

It was only after he arrived at the school that he received a
telephone
call informing him of the destruction of the previous night. He then
went on with his classes of the day and only during the first recess
did he take the trouble to inform the entire student body about what
had happened.

Jewish historians rewrote history

Historians wrote: "Every single Jew was beaten, chased, robbed,
insulted and humiliated. The SA tore the Jews from their beds,
mercilessly beat them in their apartments and then ... chased them
almost to death ... Blood flowed everywhere."

[9] Is it conceivable that thousands of Jewish children would be have
been sent to school by their parents on the morning after that fateful
night if the attacks against Jews had been so horrific or extensive?
Would any parents have let their children go to school if they had
thought there was even the slightest danger of them being attacked by
roving gangs of SA men? I think the answer is clearly no!

Who Could the Provocateurs Have Been?

In the wake of the Crystal Night, almost everyone wanted to know who
the culprits were. Dr. Goebbels expressed his suspicion that a secret
organization must have instigated the entire affair. He simply could
not believe that anything so well organized could have been a
spontaneous popular outburst.

Apparently to avoid internal wrangling and the harm that this would do
to their public image, an investigation to determine the instigators
never took place. Hitler believed that Dr. Goebbels, his closest
confidant and the one man he could never abandon, had been the
instigator.

The only persons actually punished were individual SA men who had
participated directly in the pogrom and been accused in German courts
of murder, assault, looting or other criminal acts by Jewish or German
witnesses to these crimes. But before any of these cases ever actually
came to trail, Hitler issued a special decree ordering the
postponement
of all such cases until after the accused individuals were first
prosecuted by the Supreme Party Court, an internal court concerned
with
discipline within the National Socialist Party organization.

Mystery phone calls to local town officials

(Kreisleiters and Ortsgruppenleiters) were awakened from their sleep
in
the middle of the night by telephone calls. Someone claiming to be
from
the regional Party headquarters or the regional Party propaganda
bureau
(Gauleitung or Gaupropagandaleitung) would ask what was happening in
the official's town or city. If the Party official answered "Nothing,
everything is quiet," the telephone caller would then say in German
slang that he had received an order to the effect that the Jews were
going to get it tonight and that the respective official should carry
out the order.

In most cases the Party leader, disturbed from his sleep, did not even
understand what had happened. Some simply dismissed the call as a joke
and went back to bed.

Others called back the office from where the telephone voice had
pretended to be calling. If they managed to reach someone in charge,
they were often told that nobody knew anything about such a call. But
if they reached only a lower official they were often told: "Well, if
you got that order, you'd better go ahead and do what you were told."
These telephone calls caused considerable confusion. All this came out
months later during the trials conducted by the Supreme Party Court.
The Chief Judge concluded that in every case a misunderstanding had
arisen in one link or other of the chain of command. But when they
were
confronted with apparently genuine orders to organize demonstrations
against the Jews that night, most of the Party leaders had simply not
known what to do.

Obviously a group of centrally organized thugs

The pattern of seemingly sporadic anti-Jewish incidents in small
towns,
followed only later by a carefully planned outburst in many large
cities throughout Germany, clearly suggests the work of a centrally
organized group of well-trained agents. Even shortly after the Crystal
Night, many leading Party officials suspected that the entire affair
had been centrally coordinated. Significantly, even Hermann Graml, the
only West German historian who has written in detail about the Crystal
Night, carefully distinguished between provocateurs and people who
were
simply carried away by their emotions and spontaneously took part in
the riot and destruction.

The timing was perfect

Munich on the Ninth of November
While all this was happening across the Reich, a special annual
commemoration was being held in Munich. Fifteen years earlier, on 9
November 1923, a movement led by Adolph Hitler, Erich von Ludendorff
(a
leading First World War General), and two major figures in the
Bavarian
government tried to depose the legal government and take
responsibility

Feldherrnhalle

rebels were shot down next to the Feldherrnhalle, a famous old
monument
building in central Munich. Accordingly, the 9th of November had been
commemorated every year since 1933 as the memorial day for the
martyred
heroes of the National Socialist movement. Adolph Hitler and the Party
veterans, as well as all of the Gauleiters (regional Party leaders)
met
every year in Munich for the occasion. Hitler would usually deliver a
speech to a select audience of Party veterans at the famous
Buergerbraeukeller restaurant on the evening of the 8th.

On the morning of the 9th Hitler and his veteran comrades would
reenact
the 1923 "March to the Feldherrnhalle."

On the evening of the 9th the Fuehrer always held an informal dinner
at
the Old Town Hall ("Alte Rathaus") with old comrades as well as all
the
Gauleiters. At midnight young men who were about to enter the SS and
the SA were sworn in at the Feldherrnhalle.

All of the Gauleiters and other guests participated in this very
solemn
ceremony. After it was over they left Munich and returned to their
homes throughout the Reich.

Gaulieters not at posts

It is clear that the 9th of November date was chosen very cleverly.
The
annual commemoration ceremony of that day insured that almost all of
the Gauleiters would be away from their home offices when the
anti-Jewish demonstrations began. In other words, the actual
decision-making responsibilities that were normally carried out by the
Gauleiters were temporarily in the hands of lower-ranking individuals
with less experience.

Between 8 and 10 November, subordinate officials stood in for the
Gauleiters who were either in Munich or en route to or from the annual
commemoration there. This temporary transfer of decision-making
authority is very important because it contributed to much of the
subsequent confusion and thus helped the provocateurs. Another
contributing factor was the fact that no one expected any trouble. At
that time Germany was one of the most peaceful countries in the world.

There was no reason to expect any kind of unrest. It was only during
dinner at the Old Town Hall that the first sporadic reports of riot
and
destruction reached Munich from some of the Gauleiter's home offices.
At the same time it was learned that Ernst vom Rath had died in Paris
from his wounds.

What Was Goebbels Doing?

about 9 p.m. and returned to his apartment. Dr. Goebbels then stood up
and spoke briefly about the latest news. He informed the audience that
vom Rath had died and that, as a result, anti-Jewish demonstrations
had
spontaneously broken out in two or three places. Goebbels was renowned
for his passionate and inspiring speeches. But what he gave that
evening was not a speech at all but only a short and very informal
announcement.

He suggested that the Gauleiters and the head of the SA, Viktor Lutze,
should contact their home offices to make sure that peace and order
were being maintained.

You may have heard the widespread allegation that Goebbels started the
Crystal Night pogrom with a fiery speech on that evening of 9
November.
This widely accepted story is false. The following facts will clarify
this point:

As Gauleiter for Berlin, Dr. Goebbels had no authority outside of his
Berlin district. Although he was also the Propaganda Minister of the
German government, this did not give him any authority over Party
officials. Furthermore, he had no authority whatsoever over the SA or
the SS.

Goebbels understood this damaged the Reich international standing
Of all the National Socialist leaders, Dr. Goebbels would have
understood better than anyone else the immense damage that an
anti-Jewish pogrom would cause for Germany. On the morning of 10
November, when he first learned about the extent of the damage and
destruction of the previous night, he was furious and shocked at the
stupidity of those who had participated.

How could a speech given after 9 p.m. on the evening of 9 November
have
possibly incited a "pogrom" which had already begun the day before
when
the first provocateurs appeared at municipal and Party offices to
persuade officials to take action against the Jews?

Gauleiters telephoned subordinates to maintain peace
The Gauleiters and the SA commander went to the telephones and
called
their respective home offices to order their subordinates to do
everything necessary to maintain peace and order. They emphasized that
under no circumstances must anyone take part in any demonstrations.
These telephone instructions were written down at the home offices by
whoever was on duty. The orders from each Gauleiter were then passed
on
by telex to other offices within the Gau or district. These telex
messages are still in various records files and are available to
anyone
who wishes to examine them.

Orders to Stop the Pogrom

offices, the head of the SA, Viktor Lutze, ordered all of his
immediate
subordinates, the SA Gruppenfuehrers, who were together with him in
Munich, to call their home offices as well. Lutze ordered that under
no
circumstances could SA men take part in any demonstrations against
Jews, and that furthermore the SA was to intervene to stop any
demonstrations already in progress.

As a result of these strict orders, SA men began to guard Jewish
stores
that very night wherever windows had been broken. There is no doubt
about this order by Lutze because we have the postwar court testimony
of several witnesses confirming it. The SS and the police were given
similar orders to restore peace and order.

Heydrich orders SS to protect Jews

all destruction of property and to protect Jews against demonstrators.
The telex communication of this order still exists. It is in the files
of the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg.
However, during the Nuremberg trial this telex order was presented in
three different forms, with forged amendments to change the original
meaning.

Hitler was furious
wpeFE.jpg (2489 bytes) Adolf Hitler joined the midnight celebration at
the Feldherrnhalle. It was only after he returned to his apartment
about one o'clock in the morning that he learned about the
demonstrations which had been taking place in Munich, during which one
synagogue had been set on fire. He was furious and immediately ordered
the police chief of Munich to come see him. Hitler told him to
immediately stop the fire and to make sure that no other outrages took
place in Munich. He then called various police and Party officials
throughout the Reich to learn the extent of these demonstrations

Finally, he ordered a telex message sent to all Gauleiter offices. It
read: "By express order from the very highest authority, arson against
Jewish businesses or other property must in no case and under no
circumstances take place." Synagogues were not specifically mentioned,
apparently because Hitler was still unaware of the burning of
synagogues, apart from the one in Munich.

How Did the SA Get Involved Despite the Orders From Its Own Leaders?

According to the records, at least three of the 28 SA Groups did not
obey the orders of SA chief Lutze. Instead, they sent out their men to
destroy synagogues and Jewish buildings. In effect they did precisely
the opposite of what Lutze had ordered. What actually happened is
clear
from the testimony and evidence presented at postwar trials against
former SA men accused of participating in the riot.

Provocateurs sent messages to SA Brigade

based to a large extent on the report of SA Brigade 50 chief Karl
Lucke
and begins with these words: "On 10 November 1938, at 3 o'clock in the
morning, I received the following order: 'By order of the
Gruppenfuehrer, all Jewish synagogues within the Brigade district are
to be immediately blown up or set on fire'." Lucke then included in
his
report a listing of synagogues which had been destroyed by members of
his Brigade.

This report has been cited by the prosecution at the Nuremberg
Tribunal
and by practically all of the consensus historians ever since as proof
that the SA was given orders to destroy Jewish stores and synagogues.

Lutze ordered the Group leaders to contact their home offices to stop
all anti-Jewish demonstrations, Fust, along with the other SA leaders,
did just that. He called his office in Mannheim and passed on the
orders he had received from Lutze. The man who was on duty that night
at the Mannheim SA office telephone and who received Fust's order
confirmed that he understood it and then hung up. But he never passed
on the order he had received. Instead, he transmitted precisely the
opposite order.

Fritsch gets bogus orders

man on duty at the telephone to immediately call the deputy group
leader, Lucke, who was in nearby Darmstadt. But instead he called SA
Oberfuehrer (senior colonel) Fritsch and asked him to come to the
office. Fritsch had a reputation for not being particularly clever.
When he arrived, the man who had received the telephone call showed
him
a small paper slip with a few notes on it which said that the
synagogues within the Mannheim SA Group district were to be destroyed.

The man who had received the call explained to Fritsch that the order
had just arrived from Munich. Slow-minded as he was, Fritsch did not
know what to do and called the local Kreisleiter (district Party
leader) and his deputy. These two men then arrived at the SA office
and
discussed the situation, while at the same time the telephone duty man
notified other SA leaders, but still not the deputy Group leader
Lucke.
In the meantime the small paper slip disappeared and the SA men now
arriving at the headquarters met only the Kreisleiter, who told them
about the order which he thought had come from Munich. No one asked
for
any further confirmation. The SA men then left to begin the
destruction. Hours later, when the whole action was almost finished,
the telephone guard finally called Deputy Group Leader Lucke and
passed
on the false order. He also informed Lucke that the action had already
been going on for several hours. Since it was almost all over by this
time, Lucke also neglected to ask for confirmation of the order. It
was
already 3 o'clock in the morning. Lucke then alerted the
Standartenfuehrer of his Brigade and carried out the destruction
within
the Darmstadt district.

Mysterious telephone call

At 8 o'clock the next morning Lucke sat down and wrote the report
which
was later cited at the Nuremberg Tribunal. In fact, as already shown,
there was no order to commit arson or carry out destruction against
any
Jewish property from the Gruppenfuehrer in Munich, but only from the
telephone guard. Who he was remains a mystery. During the postwar
trials against members of this SA unit, none of the judges asked for
the name or identity of this telephone guard. This mysterious man was
very probably an agent for those who were actually behind the entire
Crystal Night Affair.

The Fine Imposed on the Jews

furious about what had happened. Hermann Goering, who was responsible
for Germany's economy, complained that it would be impossible to
replace the special plate glass of the broken store windows because it
was not manufactured in Germany. It had to be imported from Belgium
and
would cost a great deal of precious foreign currency.

Reason for fine

goods, the Reich was short of foreign exchange currency. Goering
therefore decided that because this shortage was caused by the Jews,
it
was they who would have to pay for the broken glass. He imposed a fine
of one billion Reichsmarks on the German Jews.

It was certainly unjust to force Jews to pay for damage which they had
not caused. Goering understood this. However, in private he justified
the fine by citing the fact that the 1933 Jewish declaration of war
against Germany was proclaimed in the name of the millions of Jews
throughout the world.

Therefore they could now help their co-religionists in Germany bear
the
consequences of the boycott. It should also be pointed out that only
German Jews with assets of more than 5,000 Reichsmarks in cash had to
contribute to the fine. In 1938, when prices were very low, 5,000
Reichsmarks was a small fortune.

The Reich confiscated all insurance payments that were to have been
paid to Jews whose businesses and homes were looted or destroyed and
the Jewish owners were made personally responsible for the cost of all
repairs.

Feb. 7, 2001 | Arguing among themselves about the meanings of objects
like pottery shards, animal bones and the foundations of long-ruined
buildings is something archaeologists usually do in the privacy of
their own profession. But when the argument is about who wrote the
Bible, why it was written and what, if any, of the historical events
described in the Old Testament are true -- and when the
archaeologist's excavations are conducted on some of the most
contested land in the world, the Middle East -- the tempest is almost
guaranteed to boil over the rim of the teapot. No one knows this
better than Israel Finkelstein, chairman of the Archaeology Department
at Tel Aviv University, who, with archaeology historian and journalist
Neil Asher Silberman, has just published a book called "The Bible
Unearthed: Archaeology's New Vision of Ancient Israel and the Origin
of Its Sacred Text."

"The Bible Unearthed" is the latest salvo fired in a pitched battle
between those who consider the Old Testament to contain plenty of
reliable historical facts, and those who, at the opposite extreme, say
it's pure mythology. The debate reached the general population of
Israel, sending what one journalist called a "shiver" down the
nation's "collective spine," in late 1999, when another archaeologist
from Tel Aviv University, Ze'ev Herzog, wrote a cover story for the
weekend magazine of the national daily newspaper, Ha'aretz. In the
essay, Herzog laid out many of the theories Finkelstein and Silberman
present in their book: "the Israelites were never in Egypt, did not
wander in the desert, did not conquer the land [of Canaan] in a
military campaign and did not pass it on to the twelve tribes of
Israel. Perhaps even harder to swallow is the fact that the united
kingdom of David and Solomon, described in the Bible as a regional
power, was at most a small tribal kingdom." The new theories envision
this modest chiefdom as based in a Jerusalem that was essentially a
cow town, not the glorious capital of an empire.

Although, as Herzog notes, some of these findings have been accepted
by the majority of biblical scholars and archaeologists for years and
even decades, they are just now making a dent in the awareness of the
Israeli public -- a very painful dent. They challenge many of the Old
Testament stories central to Israeli beliefs about their own national
character and destiny, stories that have influenced much of Western
culture as well. The tales of the patriarchs -- Abraham, Isaac and
Joseph among others -- were the first to go when biblical scholars
found those passages rife with anachronisms and other inconsistencies.
The story of Exodus, one of the most powerful epics of enslavement,
courage and liberation in human history, also slipped from history to
legend when archaeologists could no longer ignore the lack of
corroborating contemporary Egyptian accounts and the absence of
evidence of large encampments in the Sinai Peninsula ("the wilderness"
where Moses brought the Israelites after leading them through the
parted Red Sea).

Herzog's article led to a nationwide bout of soul-searching. After it
appeared, universities organized conferences where distressed citizens
could quiz experts on the details and meanings of this new and not-so-
new research; Israeli newspaper journalists wrote stories casting the
theories as blows against the cultural identity and even the political
legitimacy of Israel; and scholars who quarrel with the ideas of
archaeologists like Finkelstein wrote fiery letters and editorials
denouncing them as "biblical minimalists."

Them's fightin' words. In this field, it seems, there are few worse
epithets to throw at a colleague than "minimalist." The moniker is
usually applied to a controversial group of European biblical
scholars, sometimes called the Copenhagen School, who have insisted
that since there is, to their minds, so little corroborative evidence
supporting the stories in the Old Testament, the scriptures should be
regarded as a collection of legends, and figures like David and
Solomon considered "no more historical than King Arthur." The
inflammatory implication behind the name "minimalist" (which
Finkelstein and Silberman dismiss as a canard invented by the group's
"detractors") is that an emotional, religious or political agenda,
rather than a judicious weighing of the facts, drives their research.
Their most vehement critics accuse the minimalists of being anti-Bible
and anti-Israeli, for to some any attack on the historical legitimacy
of the Bible, with its grand national myth of a people chosen by God
to rule in the Promised Land, is a blow struck at the legitimacy of
the current state of Israel.

Into this incendiary territory steps Finkelstein, a prominent and well-
respected Israeli archaeologist. Although his staunchest critics,
including William Dever, professor of Near East archaeology and
anthropology at the University of Arizona, and Hershel Shanks, editor
of the Biblical Archaeology Review, have called him a "minimalist,"
his defenders scoff at the label. "The Bible Unearthed" does observe
that "from a purely literary and archaeological standpoint, the
minimalists have some points in their favor," but it concludes that
"archaeology has shown that there were simply too many material
correspondences between the finds in Israel ? and the world described
in the Bible to suggest that the Bible was ? fanciful priestly
literature, written with no historical basis at all."

Nevertheless, Finkelstein is an iconoclast. He established his
reputation in part by developing a theory about the settlement
patterns of the nomadic shepherd tribes who would eventually become
the Israelites, bolstering the growing consensus that they were
originally indistinguishable from the rest of their neighbors, the
Canaanites. This overturns a key element in the Bible: The Old
Testament depicts the Israelites as superior outsiders -- descended
from Abraham, a Mesopotamian immigrant -- entitled by divine order to
invade Canaan and exterminate its unworthy, idolatrous inhabitants.
The famous battle of Jericho, with which the Israelites supposedly
launched this campaign of conquest after wandering for decades in the
desert, has been likewise debunked: The city of Jericho didn't exist
at that time and had no walls to come tumbling down. These assertions
are all pretty much accepted by mainstream archaeologists.

Finkelstein's latest and most controversial claim, however, concerns
the dating of certain ruins, including those at a site where he co-
heads an ongoing excavation: Megiddo. Megiddo is thought to be the
location of the final, future battle of Armageddon, but it is also
named in the Bible as one of the major provincial capitals in the
united kingdom of Israel under the reigns of David and Solomon. When
archaeologists discovered the remains of monumental structures at
Megiddo in the 1920s and 1930s, they promptly attributed them to
Solomon's time. In "The Bible Unearthed," Finkelstein and Silberman
present Finkelstein's argument for redating these structures,
including the massive "Solomon's Gates" found in several similar
cities, to a period about 100 years later, and they give credit for
building them to King Ahab, husband of the notorious heathen Jezebel
and a ruler much reviled for his apostasy in the Old Testament.

Some of his colleagues find this theory unacceptable. Dever declares
that Finkelstein is "the only archaeologist in the world" who
advocates the redating. Lawrence Stager, a professor of the
archaeology of Israel at Harvard and director of the Harvard Semitic
Museum, says "Ninety-five percent of the specialists in the field
would disagree with him" and dismisses Phyllis Tribble, a professor of
biblical studies who enthusiastically reviewed "The Bible Unearthed"
in the New York Times Book Review, as someone who "doesn't know much
about the Old Testament and archaeology."

And while Baruch Halpern, a historian who was a co-director of the
Megiddo excavation with Finkelstein, describes the book as "excellent"
and "challenging," he remains unconvinced by Finkelstein's redating of
the Solomonic ruins because the theory relies overmuch on pottery
seriation, a technique for dating sites using ceramic remains, which
he distrusts. Nevertheless, Halpern expresses surprise at the extent
of the ire Finkelstein's theory has evoked. "This touched an
incredibly vital nerve ... They can't abide the thought that the
consensus might be mistaken. If one of the only absolute anchors
between archaeology and the text is removed, they are thoroughly at
sea."

Ordinarily, the precise dating of buildings erected 3,000 years ago in
a kingdom that long ago passed away into ancient history would
preoccupy only a small group of specialists. Once the Bible's
involved, though, all bets are off; its influence on contemporary
Israeli identity is still tremendous. "It's used as a deed, as an
outline of what people are going to do, as a way of proving your
genealogy," says Amy Dockser Marcus, former Middle East correspondent
for the Wall Street Journal and author of "The View From Nebo: How
Archaeology Is Rewriting the Bible and Reshaping the Middle East."

And it's not just Israel where the scriptures have provided a
blueprint for political and cultural as well as religious projects.
Take the story of the conquest of Canaan, for example: a legend about
a "righteous" nation seizing a great country from a people who did not
deserve it. It has implications for the establishment of the current
state of Israel, but the Europeans who colonized America deliberately
invoked that conquest myth, as well, in their campaigns against Native
Americans. The Bible's story of David, who with his great army
captured Jerusalem and united a vast empire in Palestine, and his son
Solomon, who built the First Temple in Jerusalem and many magnificent
gates, palaces and stables throughout the land, depicts the united
kingdom as ancient Israel's Golden Age. The founders of the modern
state of Israel invoked that kingdom and heralded its "restoration."
And even Jews who consider themselves secular can experience the
revelation of David and Solomon's relative insignificance as
deflating.

Others see the downgrading of David and Solomon's reigns as positively
ominous. In a response to Herzog's article in Ha'aretz, Hershel Shanks
of the Biblical Archaeology Review lumped both Herzog and Finkelstein
with the biblical minimalists and accused them of having "a political
agenda." "[A]t the extreme," Shanks wrote, "they can even be viewed as
anti-Semitic." According to Marcus, "People say that Finkelstein means
well but what he's doing is giving amunition to people who are anti-
Israel, and you do see some of this stuff turning up on pro-
Palestinian web sites, for example." Finkelstein himself has no
patience for such charges, maintaining that he has no political agenda
and is just a scholar doing his job. "Nonsense," he replied by e-mail
when the "ammunition" issue was raised. "Research is research, and
strong societies can easily endure discoveries like this."

By comparison with today's skeptical turmoil, the early years of the
modern Israeli state were a honeymoon period for archaeology and the
Bible, in which the science seemed to validate the historical passages
of the Old Testament left and right. As Finkelstein and Silberman
relate, midcentury archaeologists usually "took the historical
narratives of the Bible at face value"; Israel's first archaeologists
were often said to approach a dig with a spade in one hand and the
Bible in the other. The Old Testament frequently served as the
standard against which all other data were measured: If someone found
majestic ruins, they dated them to Solomon's time; signs of a battle
were quickly attributed to the conquest of Canaan.

That confidence was not entirely misplaced; in particular, the Old
Testament contains very detailed genealogies and gets high marks in
geography. Eventually, though, as archaeological methods improved and
biblical scholars analyzed the text itself for inconsistencies and
anachronisms, the amount of the Bible regarded as historically
verifiable eroded. The honeymoon was over.

According to Jack M. Sasson, professor of Judaic and biblical studies
at Vanderbilt University, "There is a kind of curtain drawn across the
Bible. After it you can find history, before it not. Most responsible
scholars in the '20s began with Abraham. As time progressed, the
curtain moved further down, and people were debating whether Exodus
really happened, then the conquest. Now the big debate has slipped
even further [into the present]. It has gotten down to being about the
monarchy."

Marcus says that Finkelstein is "difficult to dismiss because he's so
much an insider in terms of his credentials and background. He's an
archaeologist, not a theologian, and he is an Israeli. It's hard to
say that someone who was born in Israel and intends to live the rest
of his life there is anti-Israeli." In her mind, Finkelstein's work
parallels a broader change in Israeli society led by those who, like
Finkelstein, were born after the task of state building had been
accomplished. "They're not as wedded to the mythology of Israel," she
says "Their identities are not as caught up in toeing to the
traditional narratives. This group of historians has gone into the
archives and done a lot of research and come up with new
interpretations of Israel's recent past. Israel Finkelstein is part of
that, but he's looking at Israel's ancient past." Marcus calls this
group of scholars "new historians"; others have dubbed the trend "post-
Zionism."

Here, also, there are striking similarities between contemporary
politics and the way ancient history gets studied. Many of the new
dating methods used by Finkelstein and others to undermine the
historicity of certain Bible stories involve seeing the first
Israelites as part of the fabric of Middle Eastern life rather than as
a remarkable exception. "The Bible Unearthed" notes that in the 1970s,
archaeologists began to use long-term anthropological models, which
were built by scholars who compared many cultures to see how
civilizations tend to develop along predictable lines. Certain
artifacts -- monumental buildings, administrative correspondence,
royal chronicles and national scripture like the Bible -- are almost
always "a sign of state formation, in which power is centralized in
national institutions like an official cult or monarchy."

That kind of state didn't exist in Jerusalem during David and
Solomon's time, so Finkelstein and Silberman argue that the Old
Testament must have been written (though perhaps "compiled" is a more
accurate term) later. They peg a king descended from David, Josiah,
who ruled over a much more developed Jerusalem more than 300 years
after David, as the one who ordered its transcription. Josiah,
according to "Unearthing the Bible," needed a national scripture to
cement a strictly monotheistic religious orthodoxy and to promote the
idea that only a king of Davidic lineage could reunite the lost
empire. It should come as no surprise, then, that the Old Testament is
still used to forge a national identity for today's Israel, since
according to Finkelstein and Silberman, it was created to do just that
in the ancient world.

The Old Testament is also a story about how special Israel is, singled
out from its neighbors by God's orders. Archaeology used to mimic that
separatism. "For a long time the archaeology of Israel was studied in
isolation," says Marcus. "Israel Finkelstein sees modern and ancient
Israel as part of the broader Middle East ? I consider him part of an
emerging common ground. He's an archaeologist starting to look at the
past in a different way." Finkelstein, when asked about the comparison
to the new historians, replied, "The general atmosphere in this
country, and in my generation, is very different now from that of,
say, 20 or 50 years ago. There is a strong cultural activity going on
here, and part of it is a fresh thinking about the past -- distant and
more recent." Techniques like the long-term anthropological models
Finkelstein prizes pull ancient Israel and, metaphorically, modern
Israel, back into the texture of Middle Eastern life, so it's no
wonder they're associated with a new, more pro-peace process current
in Israeli culture.

How those views will weather the current faltering of the process and
the probable election of hard-liner Ariel Sharon is uncertain. The
election of Sharon, who many believe ignited the current intifada when
he provocatively visited the Temple Mount, a site sacred to both Jews
and Muslims (and who is quoted in the pages of the Jan. 29 issue of
the New Yorker saying "the Koran doesn't mention Jerusalem once ? In
the Bible it is mentioned 676 times"), may reflect a more general
retrenchment on the subject of Israel's symbolic underpinnings.
Finkelstein remains unfazed by his critics: "I am sure that no
educated Israeli or American Jew for that matter, would want me to
silence the results of my research. We are an open, democratic
society, and we need to face these things -- both on the distant past
and on the more recent one. In fact, this makes us a stronger society!
And I really don't think -- let me know if I am wrong -- that there is
a committee sitting somewhere in, say, Switzerland, and deciding the
fate of nations according to historical or biblical research."

Idea of a Jewish people invented, says historian

No one is more surprised than Shlomo Sand that his latest academic
work has spent 19 weeks on Israel's bestseller list - and that success
has come to the history professor despite his book challenging
Israel's biggest taboo.

Dr Sand argues that the idea of a Jewish nation - whose need for a
safe haven was originally used to justify the founding of the state of
Israel - is a myth invented little more than a century ago.

An expert on European history at Tel Aviv University, Dr Sand drew on
extensive historical and archaeological research to support not only
this claim but several more - all equally controversial.

In addition, he argues that the Jews were never exiled from the Holy
Land, that most of today's Jews have no historical connection to the
land called Israel and that the only political solution to the
country's conflict with the Palestinians is to abolish the Jewish
state.

The success of When and How Was the Jewish People Invented? looks
likely to be repeated around the world. A French edition, launched
last month, is selling so fast that it has already had three print
runs.

Translations are under way into a dozen languages, including Arabic
and English. But he predicted a rough ride from the pro-Israel lobby
when the book is launched by his English publisher, Verso, in the
United States next year.

In contrast, he said Israelis had been, if not exactly supportive, at
least curious about his argument. Tom Segev, one of the country's
leading journalists, has called the book "fascinating and
challenging".

Surprisingly, Dr Sand said, most of his academic colleagues in Israel
have shied away from tackling his arguments. One exception is Israel
Bartal, a professor of Jewish history at Hebrew University in
Jerusalem. Writing in Haaretz, the Israeli daily newspaper, Dr Bartal
made little effort to rebut Dr Sand's claims. He dedicated much of his
article instead to defending his profession, suggesting that Israeli
historians were not as ignorant about the invented nature of Jewish
history as Dr Sand contends.

The idea for the book came to him many years ago, Dr Sand said, but he
waited until recently to start working on it. "I cannot claim to be
particularly courageous in publishing the book now," he said. "I
waited until I was a full professor. There is a price to be paid in
Israeli academia for expressing views of this sort."

Dr Sand's main argument is that until little more than a century ago,
Jews thought of themselves as Jews only because they shared a common
religion. At the turn of the 20th century, he said, Zionist Jews
challenged this idea and started creating a national history by
inventing the idea that Jews existed as a people separate from their
religion.

Equally, the modern Zionist idea of Jews being obligated to return
from exile to the Promised Land was entirely alien to Judaism, he
added.

"Zionism changed the idea of Jerusalem. Before, the holy places were
seen as places to long for, not to be lived in. For 2,000 years Jews
stayed away from Jerusalem not because they could not return but
because their religion forbade them from returning until the messiah
came."

The biggest surprise during his research came when he started looking
at the archaeological evidence from the biblical era.

"I was not raised as a Zionist, but like all other Israelis I took it
for granted that the Jews were a people living in Judea and that they
were exiled by the Romans in 70AD.

"But once I started looking at the evidence, I discovered that the
kingdoms of David and Solomon were legends.

"Similarly with the exile. In fact, you can't explain Jewishness
without exile. But when I started to look for history books describing
the events of this exile, I couldn't find any. Not one.

"That was because the Romans did not exile people. In fact, Jews in
Palestine were overwhelming peasants and all the evidence suggests
they stayed on their lands."

Instead, he believes an alternative theory is more plausible: the
exile was a myth promoted by early Christians to recruit Jews to the
new faith. "Christians wanted later generations of Jews to believe
that their ancestors had been exiled as a punishment from God."

So if there was no exile, how is it that so many Jews ended up
scattered around the globe before the modern state of Israel began
encouraging them to "return"?

Dr Sand said that, in the centuries immediately preceding and
following the Christian era, Judaism was a proselytising religion,
desperate for converts. "This is mentioned in the Roman literature of
the time."

Jews travelled to other regions seeking converts, particularly in
Yemen and among the Berber tribes of North Africa. Centuries later,
the people of the Khazar kingdom in what is today south Russia, would
convert en masse to Judaism, becoming the genesis of the Ashkenazi
Jews of central and eastern Europe.

Dr Sand pointed to the strange state of denial in which most Israelis
live, noting that papers offered extensive coverage recently to the
discovery of the capital of the Khazar kingdom next to the Caspian
Sea.

Ynet, the website of Israel's most popular newspaper, Yedioth
Ahronoth, headlined the story: "Russian archaeologists find long-lost
Jewish capital." And yet none of the papers, he added, had considered
the significance of this find to standard accounts of Jewish history.

One further question is prompted by Dr Sand's account, as he himself
notes: if most Jews never left the Holy Land, what became of them?

"It is not taught in Israeli schools but most of the early Zionist
leaders, including David Ben Gurion [Israel's first prime minister],
believed that the Palestinians were the descendants of the area's
original Jews. They believed the Jews had later converted to Islam."

Dr Sand attributed his colleagues' reticence to engage with him to an
implicit acknowledgement by many that the whole edifice of "Jewish
history" taught at Israeli universities is built like a house of
cards.

The problem with the teaching of history in Israel, Dr Sand said,
dates to a decision in the 1930s to separate history into two
disciplines: general history and Jewish history. Jewish history was
assumed to need its own field of study because Jewish experience was
considered unique.

"There's no Jewish department of politics or sociology at the
universities. Only history is taught in this way, and it has allowed
specialists in Jewish history to live in a very insular and
conservative world where they are not touched by modern developments
in historical research.

"I've been criticised in Israel for writing about Jewish history when
European history is my specialty. But a book like this needed a
historian who is familiar with the standard concepts of historical
inquiry used by academia in the rest of the world."

Other Holocaust memoirists have devised greater fantasies. Misha
Defonseca, author of "Misha: A Memoire of the Holocaust Years,"
pretended she was a Jewish girl who lived with wolves during the war,
when she was actually a non-Jew who lived, without wolves, in Belgium.

The damage is deep. Scholars and other skeptics as well as fellow
survivors fear that Rosenblat's fabrications will only encourage doubts
about the Holocaust.

One does not have to experience it, in order to write
about it. And just like all of the science fiction books
and romantic novels those stories are based on the
writers imagination, which being legally guarded by
authors' right to invention.
Therefore, regardless of fictitious nature of a novel,
sectarians of different religious denominations than
their own, have indeed exploited the antagonism of
the mob for their own self-serving interests of quick
capitalization from slave labor, or thrills of perverse
sadistic satisfaction from seeing agony in the eyes
of their defenseless victims with complete impunity.
Cruelty indeed had place in society, and still being
deliberately perpetuated by eternal gulag economy
and its insatiable incarceration industry, in the form
of slavery and genocide against defenseless albeit
deliberately antagonized people or entire groups of
people, on the basis of their visible dissimilarities....
It's often enough for a person to have distinguished
appearance (or even a name) in order for him to be
appropriately labeled in the capacity of the targeted
victim of the mob's prejudices....
The persecution of the defenseless individuals isn't
really a one-time event, as it may be implied by any
of those books, - but an ongoing process - which is
always exposed, and could be proved if necessary.

Archaeology's New Vision of Ancient Israel
and the Origin of Its Sacred Texts.

If history is written for the present, not the past, then the quest
for the historical Bible becomes an unending endeavor subject to the
vicissitudes of times, talents and testimonies. Since the 18th
century, with its emphasis on reason as the way to truth, the endeavor
has stirred no small controversy.

Verbal warfare often enlists the armor of archaeology. By the middle
of the 19th century, discoveries in ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia also
illuminated lands between them, especially that corridor known as
Canaan, Palestine, Israel, the Holy Land or the land of the Bible.
Geographical explorations of Palestine, conducted by Edward Robinson,
an American, identified many mounds or ruins (tells) with biblical
sites. Excavations of them, pioneered by another American, William
Foxwell Albright, came in the 20th century. These labors enabled
scholars to connect the Bible with outside sources and to construct a
context for verifying its historicity. But by now, goals, judgments
and conclusions depart strikingly from those of earlier generations.

The departure is the subject of ''The Bible Unearthed,'' a fascinating
book written by two Jewish archaeologists, Israel Finkelstein and Neil
Asher Silberman. With an irenic spirit they join the debate, at times
ugly and vicious, about the historicity of the Bible (by which they
mean the Hebrew Scriptures, also known as the Old Testament). To this
battle they bring an arsenal of scholarly research, field experience
and well-chosen words artfully used. They also claim a ''new''
archaeological perspective, but it may be somewhat less than new.
Parts of the proposal have been available for decades. Yet their
particular thesis, as well as the impressive development of it, can
only lead the reader to think anew.

Near the end of the seventh century B.C. a young prince named Josiah,
descendant of King David, acceded to the throne of Judah after his
father's assassination. Described in the Bible as the most righteous
of all the kings, he in time renovated the Temple in Jerusalem. The
renovations turned up a scroll (perhaps the world's first
archaeological discovery) that began a religious reformation. Called
''the book of the law'' in II Kings, it was probably an early version
of Deuteronomy. How it came to be, and to be in the Temple, remains a
disputed topic, though Finkelstein and Silberman believe it was
written in the seventh century B.C. Obeying the commandments of the
scroll, Josiah ordered a thorough purification of the cult of the
Hebrew god YHWH (Yahweh). He abolished from the Temple, and throughout
Judah, all idolatry and fusions of different types of worship, and
extended this activity into parts of the land of Israel, for his plan
included territorial conquest. Under his leadership a reform group in
Judah declared the purified Temple as the only legitimate place of
worship and YHWH as the only deity to be worshiped. The seed of
monotheism took root.

This great reformation, inspired by a book, itself inspired the
composition of a national epic for seventh-century-B.C. Judah. A small
nation with big plans could use a grand story. In constructing it,
authors and editors drew on many diverse and conflicting traditions,
which they embellished and elaborated. The intent was ideological and
theological -- not to record history (in the modern sense) but to
appropriate the past for the present. The epic that emerged was edited
and added to in subsequent centuries to become the powerful saga we
know as the Hebrew Bible. Unequaled in the ancient world, it
articulated a national and social compact for an entire people under
God. Finkelstein and Silberman leave no doubt of their reverence for
it. In their view, however, it is ''not a miraculous revelation, but a
brilliant product of the human imagination.''

Two sections of the Bible constitute the core of the epic. The first
contains the five books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and
Deuteronomy. Its stories about Israel begin with the ancestors (the
authors regrettably use the old label ''patriarchs''), continue with
the sojourn and bondage in Egypt, the Exodus and the wanderings in the
wilderness, concluding with Israel poised to enter the promised land.
The second section includes the books of Joshua, Judges, Samuel and
Kings. It tells of the conquest of Canaan, the rule of the judges, the
establishment of a united monarchy, the division of the monarchy, the
destruction of the northern kingdom (Israel) by the Assyrians, the
destruction of the southern kingdom (Judah) by the Babylonians and the
beginnings of exile in Babylon. This second section is often called
the Deuteronomistic history because it reflects the language and ethos
of the book of Deuteronomy, judging events by the criterion of
obedience to the law, with the result of blessing or punishment by
God.

In expounding their view of the Bible as a national epic that shaped
and sustained a people, Finkelstein and Silberman juxtapose this
narrative with the discoveries and interpretations of archaeology.
They say their predecessors tended to use archaeology to argue for the
historicity of the biblical record. By contrast, they use archaeology
as an independent source to reconstruct the history of ancient Israel.
Yet respect for earlier scholarship, especially when they reject it,
lends integrity to their own work. It sends the salutary message that
the new vision of today inevitably becomes the old vision of tomorrow.
Drawing on new methods, excavations (even of old sites) and
assumptions, they turn the traditional argument on its head.
Archaeological studies, they argue, undercut rather than support the
historicity of biblical traditions about the origin and rise of
Israel. Their detailed analysis yields conclusions that are startling
to the uninitiated: the search for the historical ancestors has
failed; the Exodus did not happen as described; the violent, swift and
total conquest of Canaan never took place; the picture of judges
leading tribes in battle against enemies does not fit the data; David
and Solomon existed in the 10th century B.C. but as ''little more than
hill country chieftains.'' There was no golden age of a united
kingdom, a magnificent capital and an extended empire.

These conclusions do not lead to historical nihilism but open up
alternative understandings promoted in the thesis of the book. In
bringing together the Judean patriarch Abraham and the Israelite
patriarch Jacob, the ancestor stories serve well the needs of seventh-
century-B.C. Judah for a unified kingdom. The pastoral landscape of
these ancient stories resonates with the way a large portion of the
later Judahite population lived. The Exodus traditions also serve this
setting. Josiah's efforts to establish Judah's independence and
reclaim territory of the destroyed kingdom of Israel conflicted with a
revival of Egyptian power that encroached on Judah and Israel. The
challenge of Moses to an unnamed Pharaoh mirrors Josiah's to Pharaoh
Necho II. Similarly, the conquest narratives fit the setting. Like
Joshua, Josiah fought in the name of God and commanded his people to
stay faithful to YHWH, apart from the surrounding world. His agenda
was a second conquest of Canaan. David and Solomon also reflect the
age of Josiah, the sole legitimate heir of the dynasty. Like David,
Josiah sought a united kingdom, territorial expansion, military
conquests and the centralization of cult and politics in Jerusalem.
Thereby this seventh-century B.C. king could nullify the
transgressions of Solomon and restore the glorious past that never was
but can be.

Finkelstein and Silberman propose that from the beginning two distinct
Hebrew societies lived in the highlands of Canaan. Both were
originally Canaanite -- irony of ironies,'' the authors comment.
(Biblical diatribes against the Canaanites suggest this common origin;
after all, the Israelites protested too much.) The original division
between these societies lingers in the phrase used even for the so-
called united monarchy, ''the kingdoms of Israel and Judah.''
Furthermore, contrary to the biblical record, Judah was always the
poorer, weaker, more rural and less influential. Its prominence came
only after the fall of Israel to Assyria in 722 B.C. Then, as heir to
the northern traditions, Judah determined which would become part of
its national epic and how they would be interpreted. Caveat lector.

A classic case of Judean bias involves the Omride dynasty of the ninth
century B.C. Noting only that its founder, Omri, built at Samaria a
new capital for the kingdom of Israel, the Deuteronomistic historians
dismiss him (in eight verses of the books of Kings) as the most evil
of kings. Yet his dynasty endured some 40 years, and archaeological
evidence, from hostile witnesses at that, attests its greatness. An
inscribed stone called the Mesha stele, found in 1868 east of the Dead
Sea, reports that, to the consternation of King Mesha of Moab, Omri
and his son Ahab controlled extensive land in Transjordan. The ''House
of David'' inscription, discovered in 1993 in the biblical city of
Dan, implies even larger holdings, extending south from near Damascus
through the highlands and valleys of Israel to Moab. The Monolith
Inscription, found at ancient Nimrud in the 1840's, describes the
participation of Ahab the Israelite, with 2,000 chariots and 10,000
foot soldiers, in an anti-Assyrian coalition that tried in vain to
resist the Assyrian monarch Shalmaneser III.

In addition, excavations of northern cities attest the greatness of
the Omride dynasty. Samaria, called ''the house of Omri'' in Assyrian
records, consisted of a royal acropolis of five acres that included a
large and beautiful palace unrivaled in its time. Similarly, the ninth-
century sites of Megiddo, Hazor, Dan, Jezreel and Gezer all show
architectural achievements of the Omrides. An earlier generation of
archaeologists, eager to confirm the biblical narrative, tried
valiantly to assign these cities to the Solomonic era. To the
contrary, neither Solomon nor David of Judah but Omri of Israel
founded the first true kingdom, with all its splendors.

As Judah maligned Israel in its national epic, so it presented a
skewed picture of itself. Archaeological data show that the
traditional religion of this isolated and sparsely populated nation
consisted of local shrines (''high places'') for the worship of YHWH
alongside other deities. These syncretic practices prevailed also in
Jerusalem. Demographic growth, social transformation and the desire
for a unified land came only in the late eighth century B.C., and they
were probably related to the struggle for national survival under the
shadow of the Assyrian empire. Sensing the threat of syncretic worship
to unification, certain unidentified circles in Jerusalem condemned
the local Judean shrines as a Canaanite evil and pushed for something
new: a ''YHWH-alone'' religion centered in Jerusalem. Ironically, they
labeled this new religion the traditional one and so turned the
traditional religion into heresy. Their work prepared the way for
Josiah's Deuteronomic reformation in the next century.

But Josiah's violent death at the hands of Pharaoh Necho II put the
lie to Deuteronomistic theology. Obedience to YHWH-alone by the ideal
king did not prevent Egypt's return to enslave the people of Israel.
Even Egypt's defeat a few years later by Babylon brought not relief
but destruction to Judah. By 587 B.C. the inevitable was complete. The
Babylonian devastation of Judah, from outlying cities to proud
Jerusalem, and the subsequent exile of its aristocracy are both
biblical and archaeological realities.

Yet the story did not end. To account for the unaccountable -- the
violent death of the pious Josiah and the total destruction of eternal
Jerusalem -- the exiles revised their national saga to produce a
second edition of the Deuteronomistic history. It claimed that the
destruction of Judah was inevitable because of the evil of an earlier
king named Manasseh. Though Josiah's righteousness delayed the ending,
it could not prevent it. So the exiles altered their theology to make
the unconditional promise of YHWH to David and his dynasty contingent
on the conditional covenant made between YHWH and the people at Sinai.
In this version, if the people obey the commandments, they yet have a
future. This rewritten past spoke to the present; it served the needs
of a defeated and dispossessed people.

With the demise of the Babylonian empire in 539 B.C., the new
conqueror, Persia, for its own political reasons, allowed the exiles
to return home. Those who did constituted a province known as Yehud,
its citizens called Yehudim, or Jews. In this setting the ancient
traditions acquired new relevance. Abraham's journey from Mesopotamia
to Canaan mirrored the return of the exiles. The bondage in Egypt
followed by the Exodus also mirrored exile and return. The old
conquest of Canaan offered hope for the return to the promised land;
ancient warnings not to assimilate with the Canaanites became guides
for how to live in Yehud. The covenant of obedience made at Sinai
provided the way back to glory, centered not in the Davidic dynasty
but in a rebuilt Temple. Although the promises did not materialize,
the epic saga called the Bible became the enduring book for the
survival of a people.

Finkelstein and Silberman have themselves written a provocative book
that bears the marks of a detective story. In juxtaposing the biblical
record and archaeological data, they work with tantalizing fragments
of a distant past. Assembling clues to argue their thesis requires
bold imagination and disciplined research. ''The Bible Unearthed''
exhibits both in abundance. Imagination invariably exceeds the
evidence; research makes plausible the reconstruction. Fortunately,
the book does not achieve its goal: ''to attempt to separate history
from legend.'' It is better than that, for it shows how intertwined
they are. What ''actually happened'' and what a people thought
happened belong to a single historical process. That understanding
leads to a sobering thought. Stories of exodus from oppression and
conquest of land, stories of exile and return and stories of triumphal
vision are eerily contemporary. If history is written for the present,
are we doomed to repeat the past?

Israel deliberately forgets its history

An Israeli historian suggests the diaspora was the consequence, not of
the expulsion of the Hebrews from Palestine, but of proselytising
across north Africa, southern Europe and the Middle East

Every Israeli knows that he or she is the direct and exclusive
descendant of a Jewish people which has existed since it received the
Torah (1) in Sinai. According to this myth, the Jews escaped from
Egypt and settled in the Promised Land, where they built the glorious
kingdom of David and Solomon, which subsequently split into the
kingdoms of Judah and Israel. They experienced two exiles: after the
destruction of the first temple, in the 6th century BC, and of the
second temple, in 70 AD.

Two thousand years of wandering brought the Jews to Yemen, Morocco,
Spain, Germany, Poland and deep into Russia. But, the story goes, they
always managed to preserve blood links between their scattered
communities. Their uniqueness was never compromised.

At the end of the 19th century conditions began to favour their return
to their ancient homeland. If it had not been for the Nazi genocide,
millions of Jews would have fulfilled the dream of 20 centuries and
repopulated Eretz Israel, the biblical land of Israel. Palestine, a
virgin land, had been waiting for its original inhabitants to return
and awaken it. It belonged to the Jews, rather than to an Arab
minority that had no history and had arrived there by chance. The wars
in which the wandering people reconquered their land were just; the
violent opposition of the local population was criminal.

This interpretation of Jewish history was developed as talented,
imaginative historians built on surviving fragments of Jewish and
Christian religious memory to construct a continuous genealogy for the
Jewish people. Judaism's abundant historiography encompasses many
different approaches.

But none have ever questioned the basic concepts developed in the late
19th and early 20th centuries. Discoveries that might threaten this
picture of a linear past were marginalised. The national imperative
rejected any contradiction of or deviation from the dominant story.
University departments exclusively devoted to "the history of the
Jewish people", as distinct from those teaching what is known in
Israel as general history, made a significant contribution to this
selective vision. The debate on what constitutes Jewishness has
obvious legal implications, but historians ignored it: as far as they
are concerned, any descendant of the people forced into exile 2,000
years ago is a Jew.

Nor did these official investigators of the past join the controversy
provoked by the "new historians" from the late 1980s. Most of the
limited number of participants in this public debate were from other
disciplines or non-academic circles: sociologists, orientalists,
linguists, geographers, political scientists, literary academics and
archaeologists developed new perspectives on the Jewish and Zionist
past. Departments of Jewish history remained defensive and
conservative, basing themselves on received ideas. While there have
been few significant developments in national history over the past 60
years (a situation unlikely to change in the short term), the facts
that have emerged face any honest historian with fundamental
questions.

Founding myths shaken
Is the Bible a historical text? Writing during the early half of the
19th century, the first modern Jewish historians, such as Isaak Markus
Jost (1793-1860) and Leopold Zunz (1794-1886), did not think so. They
regarded the Old Testament as a theological work reflecting the
beliefs of Jewish religious communities after the destruction of the
first temple. It was not until the second half of the century that
Heinrich Graetz (1817-91) and others developed a "national" vision of
the Bible and transformed Abraham's journey to Canaan, the flight from
Egypt and the united kingdom of David and Solomon into an authentic
national past. By constant repetition, Zionist historians have
subsequently turned these Biblical "truths" into the basis of national
education.

But during the 1980s an earthquake shook these founding myths. The
discoveries made by the "new archaeology" discredited a great exodus
in the 13th century BC. Moses could not have led the Hebrews out of
Egypt into the Promised Land, for the good reason that the latter was
Egyptian territory at the time. And there is no trace of either a
slave revolt against the pharaonic empire or of a sudden conquest of
Canaan by outsiders.

Nor is there any trace or memory of the magnificent kingdom of David
and Solomon. Recent discoveries point to the existence, at the time,
of two small kingdoms: Israel, the more powerful, and Judah, the
future Judea. The general population of Judah did not go into 6th
century BC exile: only its political and intellectual elite were
forced to settle in Babylon. This decisive encounter with Persian
religion gave birth to Jewish monotheism.

Then there is the question of the exile of 70 AD. There has been no
real research into this turning point in Jewish history, the cause of
the diaspora. And for a simple reason: the Romans never exiled any
nation from anywhere on the eastern seaboard of the Mediterranean.
Apart from enslaved prisoners, the population of Judea continued to
live on their lands, even after the destruction of the second temple.
Some converted to Christianity in the 4th century, while the majority
embraced Islam during the 7th century Arab conquest.

Most Zionist thinkers were aware of this: Yitzhak Ben Zvi, later
president of Israel, and David Ben Gurion, its first prime minister,
accepted it as late as 1929, the year of the great Palestinian revolt.
Both stated on several occasions that the peasants of Palestine were
the descendants of the inhabitants of ancient Judea (2).

Proselytising zeal
But if there was no exile after 70 AD, where did all the Jews who have
populated the Mediterranean since antiquity come from? The smokescreen
of national historiography hides an astonishing reality. From the
Maccabean revolt of the mid-2nd century BC to the Bar Kokhba revolt of
the 2nd century AD, Judaism was the most actively proselytising
religion. The Judeo-Hellenic Hasmoneans forcibly converted the
Idumeans of southern Judea and the Itureans of Galilee and
incorporated them into the people of Israel. Judaism spread across the
Middle East and round the Mediterranean. The 1st century AD saw the
emergence in modern Kurdistan of the Jewish kingdom of Adiabene, just
one of many that converted.

The writings of Flavius Josephus are not the only evidence of the
proselytising zeal of the Jews. Horace, Seneca, Juvenal and Tacitus
were among the Roman writers who feared it. The Mishnah and the Talmud
(3) authorised conversion, even if the wise men of the Talmudic
tradition expressed reservations in the face of the mounting pressure
from Christianity.

Although the early 4th century triumph of Christianity did not mark
the end of Jewish expansion, it relegated Jewish proselytism to the
margins of the Christian cultural world. During the 5th century, in
modern Yemen, a vigorous Jewish kingdom emerged in Himyar, whose
descendants preserved their faith through the Islamic conquest and
down to the present day. Arab chronicles tell of the existence, during
the 7th century, of Judaised Berber tribes; and at the end of the
century the legendary Jewish queen Dihya contested the Arab advance
into northwest Africa. Jewish Berbers participated in the conquest of
the Iberian peninsula and helped establish the unique symbiosis
between Jews and Muslims that characterised Hispano-Arabic culture.

The most significant mass conversion occurred in the 8th century, in
the massive Khazar kingdom between the Black and Caspian seas. The
expansion of Judaism from the Caucasus into modern Ukraine created a
multiplicity of communities, many of which retreated from the 13th
century Mongol invasions into eastern Europe. There, with Jews from
the Slavic lands to the south and from what is now modern Germany,
they formed the basis of Yiddish culture (4).

Prism of Zionism
Until about 1960 the complex origins of the Jewish people were more or
less reluctantly acknowledged by Zionist historiography. But
thereafter they were marginalised and finally erased from Israeli
public memory. The Israeli forces who seized Jerusalem in 1967
believed themselves to be the direct descendents of the mythic kingdom
of David rather than - God forbid - of Berber warriors or Khazar
horsemen. The Jews claimed to constitute a specific ethnic group that
had returned to Jerusalem, its capital, from 2,000 years of exile and
wandering.

This monolithic, linear edifice is supposed to be supported by biology
as well as history. Since the 1970s supposedly scientific research,
carried out in Israel, has desperately striven to demonstrate that
Jews throughout the world are closely genetically related.

Research into the origins of populations now constitutes a legitimate
and popular field in molecular biology and the male Y chromosome has
been accorded honoured status in the frenzied search for the unique
origin of the "chosen people". The problem is that this historical
fantasy has come to underpin the politics of identity of the state ?of
Israel. By validating an essentialist, ?ethnocentric definition of
Judaism it encourages a segregation that separates Jews from non-Jews
- whether Arabs, Russian immigrants or foreign workers.

Sixty years after its foundation, Israel refuses to accept that it
should exist for the sake of its citizens. For almost a quarter of the
population, who are not regarded as Jews, this is not their state
legally. At the same time, Israel presents itself as the homeland of
Jews throughout the world, even if these are no longer persecuted
refugees, but the full and equal citizens of other countries.

A global ethnocracy invokes the myth of the eternal nation,
reconstituted on the land of its ancestors, to justify internal
discrimination against its own citizens. It will remain difficult to
imagine a new Jewish history while the prism of Zionism continues to
fragment everything into an ethnocentric spectrum. But Jews worldwide
have always tended to form religious communities, usually by
conversion; they cannot be said to share an ethnicity derived from a
unique origin and displaced over 20 centuries of wandering.

The development of historiography and the evolution of modernity were
consequences of the invention of the nation state, which preoccupied
millions during the 19th and 20th centuries. The new millennium has
seen these dreams begin to shatter.

And more and more academics are analysing, dissecting and
deconstructing the great national stories, especially the myths of
common origin so dear to chroniclers of the past.

Lie #1) Israel is only targeting legitimate military sites and is seeking
to
protect innocent lives. Israel never targets civilians.

The Gaza Strip is one of the most densely populated pieces of property in
the world. The presence of militants within a civilian population does
not,
under international law, deprive that population of their protected
status,
and hence any assault upon that population under the guise of targeting
militants is, in fact, a war crime.

Moreover, the people Israel claims are legitimate targets are members of
Hamas, which Israel says is a terrorist organization. Hamas has been
responsible for firing rockets into Israel. These rockets are extremely
inaccurate and thus, even if Hamas intended to hit military targets
within
Israel, are indiscriminate by nature. When rockets from Gaza kill Israeli
civilians, it is a war crime.

Hamas has a military wing. However, it is not entirely a military
organization, but a political one. Members of Hamas are the
democratically
elected representatives of the Palestinian people. Dozens of these
elected
leaders have been kidnapped and held in Israeli prisons without charge.
Others have been targeted for assassination, such as Nizar Rayan, a top
Hamas official. To kill Rayan, Israel targeted a residential apartment
building. The strike not only killed Rayan but two of his wives and four
of
his children, along with six others. There is no justification for such
an
attack under international law. This was a war crime.

Other of Israel's bombardment with protected status under international
law
have included a mosque, a prison, police stations, and a university, in
addition to residential buildings.

Moreover, Israel has long held Gaza under siege, allowing only the most
minimal amounts of humanitarian supplies to enter. Israel is bombing and
killing Palestinian civilians. Countless more have been wounded, and
cannot
receive medical attention. Hospitals running on generators have little or
no
fuel. Doctors have no proper equipment or medical supplies to treat the
injured. These people, too, are the victims of Israeli policies targeted
not
at Hamas or legitimate military targets, but directly designed to punish
the
civilian population.

Lie #2) Hamas violated the cease-fire. The Israeli bombardment is a
response
to Palestinian rocket fire and is designed to end such rocket attacks.

Israel never observed the cease-fire to begin with. From the beginning,
it
announced a "special security zone" within the Gaza Strip and announced
that
Palestinians who enter this zone will be fired upon. In other words,
Israel
announced its intention that Israeli soldiers would shoot at farmers and
other individuals attempting to reach their own land in direct violation
of
not only the cease-fire but international law.

Despite shooting incidents, including ones resulting in Palestinians
getting
injured, Hamas still held to the cease-fire from the time it went into
effect on June 19 until Israel effectively ended the truce on November 4
by
launching an airstrike into Gaza that killed five and injured several
others.

Israel's violation of the cease-fire predictably resulted in retaliation
from militants in Gaza who fired rockets into Israel in response. The
increased barrage of rocket fire at the end of December is being used as
justification for the continued Israeli bombardment, but is a direct
response by militants to the Israeli attacks.

Israel's actions, including its violation of the cease-fire, predictably
resulted in an escalation of rocket attacks against its own population.

Lie #3) Hamas is using human shields, a war crime.

There has been no evidence that Hamas has used human shields. The fact
is,
as previously noted, Gaza is a small piece of property that is densely
populated. Israel engages in indiscriminate warfare such as the
assassination of Nizar Rayan, in which members of his family were also
murdered. It is victims like his dead children that Israel defines as
"human
shields" in its propaganda. There is no legitimacy for this
interpretation
under international law. In circumstances such as these, Hamas is not
using
human shields, Israel is committing war crimes in violation of the Geneva
Conventions and other applicable international law.

Lie #4) Arab nations have not condemned Israel's actions because they
understand Israel's justification for its assault.

The populations of those Arab countries are outraged at Israel's actions
and
at their own governments for not condemning Israel's assault and acting
to
end the violence. Simply stated, the Arab governments do not represent
their
respective Arab populations. The populations of the Arab nations have
staged
mass protests in opposition to not only Israel's actions but also the
inaction of their own governments and what they view as either
complacency
or complicity in Israel's crimes.

Moreover, the refusal of Arab nations to take action to come to the aid
of
the Palestinians is not because they agree with Israel's actions, but
because they are submissive to the will of the US, which fully supports
Israel. Egypt, for instance, which refused to open the border to allow
Palestinians wounded in the attacks to get medical treatment in Egyptian
hospitals, is heavily dependent upon US aid, and is being widely
criticized
within the population of the Arab countries for what is viewed as an
absolute betrayal of the Gaza Palestinians.

Even Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has been regarded as a traitor
to
his own people for blaming Hamas for the suffering of the people of Gaza.
Palestinians are also well aware of Abbas' past perceived betrayals in
conniving with Israel and the US to sideline the democratically elected
Hamas government, culminating in a counter-coup by Hamas in which it
expelled Fatah (the military wing of Abbas' Palestine Authority) from the
Gaza Strip. While his apparent goal was to weaken Hamas and strengthen
his
own position, the Palestinians and other Arabs in the Middle East are so
outraged at Abbas that it is unlikely he will be able to govern
effectively.

Lie #5) Israel is not responsible for civilian deaths because it warned
the
Palestinians of Gaza to flee areas that might be targeted.

Israel claims it sent radio and telephone text messages to residents of
Gaza
warning them to flee from the coming bombardment. But the people of Gaza
have nowhere to flee to. They are trapped within the Gaza Strip. It is by
Israeli design that they cannot escape across the border. It is by
Israeli
design that they have no food, water, or fuel by which to survive. It is
by
Israeli design that hospitals in Gaza have no electricity and few medical
supplies with which to treat the injured and save lives. And Israel has
bombed vast areas of Gaza, targeting civilian infrastructure and other
sites
with protected status under international law. No place is safe within
the
Gaza Strip.

Backers, Apologists And Arms Suppliers

Introduction

Because of the unconditional support of the entire political class in the
US,
from the White House to Congress, including both Parties, incoming and
outgoing elected officials and all the principle print and electronic mass
media, the Israeli Government feels no compunction in publicly proclaiming a
detailed and graphic account of its policy of mass extermination of the
population of Gaza.

Israel's sustained and comprehensive bombing campaign of every aspect of
governance, civic institutions and society is directed toward destroying
civilized life in Gaza. Israel's totalitarian vision is driven by the
practice
of a permanent purge of Arab Palestine informed by Zionism, an ethno-racist
ideology, promulgated by the Jewish state and justified, enforced and
pursued
by its organized backers in the United States.

The facts of Israeli extermination have become known: In the first six days
of
round the clock terror bombing of major and minor populations centers, the
Jewish State has murdered and seriously maimed over 2,500 people, mostly
dismembered and burned in the open ovens of missile fire. Scores of children
and women have been slaughtered as well as defenseless civilians and
officials.

They have sealed off all access to Gaza and declared it a military, free
fire
zone, while expanding their target to include the entire population of 1.5
millions semi-starved prisoners. According to the Boston Globe (December 30,
2008): Israeli military officials said their target lists have expanded to
include the vast support network on which the Islamist movement relies to
stay
in power "we are trying to hit the whole spectrum, because everything is
connected and everything supports terrorism against Israel (my emphasis)". A
top Israeli in its secret police apparatus is quoted saying, "Hamas'
civilian
infrastructure is a very sensitive target" (ibid). What the Israeli Jewish
politicians and military planners designate as "Hamas" is the entire social
service network, the entire government and the vast majority of economic
activity, embracing almost the entire 1.5 million imprisoned residents of
Gaza.

Israel's 'target' list thus involves the 'total population', using the
totality of its non-nuclear weaponry and for an unlimited time period (until
the 'bitter end' according to the Israeli Prime Minister). Israel's defense
ministry spokesman has emphatically reiterated the Jewish's state's
totalitarian war concept emphasizing the targeting of civilians: "Hamas has
used ostensibly civilian operations as a cover for military activities.
Anything affiliated with Hamas is a legitimate target."

Like all totalitarians in the past, the Jewish state boasts of having
systematically pre-planned the extermination campaign � months in advance �
up
to and including the precise hour and day of the bombing to coincide with
inflicting the maximum murder of civilians: The rockets and bombs fell as
children were leaving school, as graduating police cadets were receiving
their
diplomas and as frantic mothers ran out from their homes to find their sons
and daughters.

The mass military extermination campaign was a follow up of its non-stop
total
economic embargo and unremitting selective assassination campaign of the
previous two years: Both were designed to purge Palestine of its Arab
population, first via mass hunger, disease, humiliation and violent
intimidation and the proxy power grab by the PLO Quislings under Zionist
puppet Abbas. When they discovered that mass hunger and selective Israeli
murder only strengthened the population's links to its democratically
elected
government and the resolve of the Hamas government to resist Israel, the
Israeli regimes unleashed its entire arsenal of weapons, including its new
'American gifts' up-to-date 1000 pound 'bunker buster' bombs and high tech
missiles to incinerate large numbers of human beings within their deadly
radius and to obliterate Palestinian civilization.

Moving directly from its totalitarian vision to its military blueprint to
the
savaging of Palestinian population centers, the Jewish state destroyed the
principle university with over 18,000 students (mostly women), mosques,
pharmacies, electrical and water lines, power stations, fishing villages,
fishing boats and the little fishing port that provided a meager supply of
fish for the starving population. They destroyed roads, transport
facilities,
food warehouses, science buildings, small factories, shops and apartments.
They destroyed a women's dormitory at the university. In the words of the
Israel leader: "because everything is connected to everything" it is
necessary
to destroy each and every facet of life, which allows humans to exist with
some dignity and independence.

The Israeli totalitarian leaders knew with confidence that they could act
and
they could kill with impunity, locally and before the entire world, because
of
the influence of the USZionist Power Configuration in and over the US White
House and Congress. They knew they had the full backing of all the major
Israeli political parties (Right, Left and Center), trade unions, mass media
and especially public opinion. Israeli state terror is backed by 81% of
Jewish
Israelis according to a poll taken by Israel's Channel 10 (Financial Times
December 30, 2008). Israeli totalitarian violence and extermination of
Palestinians is extremely popular among the Jewish electorate, especially in
raising support for the Labor Party candidate MinisterEhud Barak. They knew
they would 'succeed' with virtually no casualties because they bombed,
burned
and dismembered a defenseless population totally lacking the minimum means
to
defend themselves from F16 bombers, helicopter gun ships and missile
assaults.
The vile depravity of the assault on the defenseless population is matched
by
the utter cowardice of the Israeli military command and its cheering
bloodthirsty public ensconced behind their aerial monopoly. They suffered no
threats of aerial retaliation, no wounded or dead pilots, helicopter
gunners,
as wave after wave swept in and over a defenseless imprisoned population in
a
crowded and besieged ghetto.

Hundreds of tanks and armored carriers are prepared to invade once the
cities
and towns have been leveled, once the population is too weakened by
starvation
to resist, once the leaders and fighters have been murdered and the normal
Palestinian institutions of law and order have been pulverized, making way
for
the corrupt thuggish collaborators of the so-called Palestinian
Authoritythen
and only then, will the Israeli General staff risk the skin of a precious
Jewish 'soldier' and risk the anxiety and worry of their kin in Israel and
the
US.

Overseas Allies: The Presidents of the Major American Jewish Organizations
(PMAJO)

From the moment that the Israeli Government decided it would destroy the
newly
elected Hamas government and punish the democratic electorate of Gaza with
starvation and murder, the entire Zionist Power Configuration (ZPC) in the
US,
including the PMAJO, pulled all stops in implementing the Israeli policy.
The
PMAJO encompasses the fifty-two Jewish organizations with the largest
membership, with the greatest financial clout and the most influential
backers. The most prominent lobbyist within the PMAJO is AIPAC, which has
over
100,000 members and 150 full-time operatives in Washington actively
pressuring
the US Congress, the White House and all administrative agencies whose
policies may relate to the interests of the State of Israel. However Israeli
political extends far beyond its non-governmental agencies. Over two score
legislators in the Congress and over a dozen senators are committed Zionists
who automatically back Israel's policies and push for US funding and
armaments
for its military machine. Top officials in key administrative positions, in
Treasury, Commerce and the National Security Council, senior functionaries
in
the Pentagon and top advisers on Middle East affairs are also life-long,
fanatically committed Zionists, who consistently and unreservedly back the
policies of the State of Israel.

Equally important, the majority of the largest film, print and electronic
media are owned or deeply influenced by Jewish-Zionist media moguls who are
committed to slanting the 'news' in favor of Israel. The composition and
influence of the ZPC is central to understanding three main characteristics
of
Israel's power: (1) Israel can commit what leading United Nations and
international human rights experts have defined as 'crimes against humanity'
with total impunity; (2) Israel can secure an unlimited supply of the most
technologically advanced and destructive weapons and use them without limit
on
a civilian population in violation of even US Congressional restrictions and
(3) scores of almost unanimous United Nations condemnations of the
construction of genocidal apartheid barriers against a native population,
starvation embargoes and the current extermination campaign in Gaza are
always
vetoed by the US representative.

Many critics of Israel's genocide in Gaza also condemn what they call 'the
complicity' of Washington or 'the United States' without clearly identifying
the actual socio-political forces influencing policy-makers or the 'dual'
political loyalties and identities of the 'American' politicians who have
long-standing and deep allegiances to Israel. As a consequence, most critics
fail to counter, protest or even identify the ideology and politics of the
organized power configurations which define US complicity with Israel, who
intimidate potential critics, who write and mouth the pro-Israel editorials
in
the mass media and who filter out any criticism, any trutheven when Israel
engages in sustained bloody extermination campaigns.

The ZPC and the Israeli War of Extermination in Gaza

The ZPC played a major role in all stages of Israel's extermination campaign
against Gaza including a sustained propaganda effort. The ZPC orchestrated a
massive successful campaign through the extensive network of American mass
media, which it controls and influences. It fabricated an image of the Hamas
administration in Gaza as a terrorist organization, which allegedly seized
power through violence � totally denying its rise to power through
internationally supervised, democratic elections and its defense of its
electoral mandate against a US-Israeli backed PLO military takeover. The
entire Zionist Jewish leadership backed Israel's land grabs, its ghetto wall
around Palestinians, the hundreds of road blocks, the Jewish settlers
violently taking over Palestinian homes in the West Bank and East Jerusalem
and the criminal, genocidal Israeli economic embargo on Gaza designed to
systematically starve the Palestinians into submission. Throughout the two
years of this Israeli extermination campaign, American Zionists played a
major
role in leading the servile US government at home and abroad in backing each
totalitarian measure: The vast majority of local synagogues became
bully-pulpits defending the starvation and degradation of 1.5 million
Palestinian refugees in Gaza caged on all sides by deadly force and the
'walling off' into economically and socially devastating cantons of the 4.5
million West Bank Palestinian population under foreign occupation.

The US Congress shamelessly followed the Zionist lead, backing every single
criminal measure taken by the State of Israel and approving dozens of
resolutions, which in most cases were entirely written by AIPAC lobbyists
acting as unregistered agents of the Israeli government (contrary to US
federal statute, which requires foreign agents and lobbyists to be
registered
as such). Israel's demands for the most up-to-date US warplanes, including
F-16s, Apache helicopter gun ships, and 1,000 pound bombs were secured by
dint
of effort of the AIPAC lobbyists and their clients in the US Congress. In
other words, the American ZPC created the ideological cover and military
instruments for Israel's 'total war' against the defenseless Palestinian
population. Equally important, prominent Zionist leaders in the US Congress
and members of the foreign policy establishment blocked or vetoed any
international criticism of Israel � securing its impunity and immunity from
any of the Congressional sanctions usually enacted against criminal states.
In
other words, Israeli policy makers operated with the knowledge that there
would be no negative economic, diplomatic and military repercussions to
their
launching the planned Gaza extermination campaign because they knew, in
advance, that 'their people' were in total control of US Middle East policy
to
the extent of actually repeating verbatim each and every propaganda lie in
defense of Israel's total war against the entire population of Gaza.

In Defense of Israel's War of Extermination

The Zionist-controlled US print media, in particular the New York Times and
the Washington Post, systematically fabricated an account that fit perfectly
with Israel's official line defending its massive assault on Gaza: Omitting
any historical account of the hundreds of Israeli armed incursions and
'targeted' assassinations of Palestinian leaders and officials (even in
their
own homes) which repeatedly violated the 'cease fire' agreed by Hamas and
provoked its retaliation in self-defense of its people; omitting the years
of
an Israeli enforced starvation embargo of food and essentials that
threatened
the lives of 1.5 million Palestinians and led to the desperate efforts of
the
elected Hamas leadership to secure supplies for the people's survival via
tunnels across the Egyptian border and through missile attacks against
Israel
to pressure the Jewish state to negotiate an end of the criminal blockade.

The Conference of Presidents of the Major American Jewish Organizations, and
the vast majority of Jewish communal groups and congregations, gave
enthusiastic and unanimous support to Israel's total war, its extermination
campaign against the captive Palestinian population of Gaza. Even as images
and reports of the massive destruction, killing and wounding of over 2,500
defenseless Palestinians filtered in the mass media, not a single major
Jewish
organization broke ranks; only individuals and small groups protested. All
the
'Majors' persisted in the politics of the Big Lie: the destruction of
hospitals, mosques, universities, roads, apartments, pharmacies and fishing
ports were all labeled 'Hamas targets'. The systematic all-out assault by
uncontested helicopter gunships against 1.5 millions civilians was erased by
tendentious accounts of Hamas' homemade missiles falling ineffectively near
Israeli towns.

A close reading of the most important propaganda organ of the PMAJO, The
Daily
Alert (TDA), during the first 5 days of Israel's assault, reveals the
propaganda tack taken by the leadership of the pro-Israel power
configuration.
TDA systematically worked to achieve the following:

1.
Exaggerate the threats to Israel by the Palestinian missiles from Gaza,
citing
4 Israeli deaths, while omitting any mention of the 2,500 Palestinian dead
and
wounded and the total destruction of their economy and living conditions
(without safe water, electricity, food, cooking fuel, medicine and heat in
the
winter)

2.
Promote Israel's military assault as 'defensive', directed at eliminating
Hamas rocket attacks while omitting mention of Israel's clearly stated
purpose
of destroying all civil organizations, social welfare agencies, educational
facilities, medical clinics and public security institutions connected in
any
way with the elected Hamas government and any auxiliary agencies.

3.
Cite select statement from Israel's allies and clients (Washington, the US
media, Germany and the UK) blaming Hamas for the conflict without mentioning
the vast majority of countries in the United Nations General Assembly
condemning Israel's brutality.

4.
Reproduce Israeli slanders against any and all international human rights
leaders and organizations that condemn the Jewish state's policy of genocide
against the native Palestinians. In this regard, TDA is the foremost
'genocide
denier' in the United States and, perhaps outside of Israel, in the world.

5.
Repeatedly cite Israeli political and military leaders' claims of acting
'with
restraint', 'safeguarding civilians', and 'targeting military objectives',
even in the face of reports and images of mass civilian destruction and loss
of life documented in the vast majority of (non-US) Western media.

6.
Defend every Israeli bombing mission, every day, every hour, of every
building, every home, and every economic, religious and educational
institution in Gaza as 'defensive' or a 'reprisal', all the while quoting
some
of the most notorious, unconditional, perennial apologists of Israeli
violence
as if they were unbiased intellectuals, including Benny 'Nuke Tehran'
Morris,
Marty Peretz and Amos Oz

7.
The Daily Alert quotes US writers, journalists and editors who praise and
defend Israel's 'total war' without identifying their long-standing
affiliation and identification with Zionist organizations, giving the false
image of a wide spectrum of opinion behind the assault. Never has even the
most moderate Jewish or Gentile critic of Israel's massive extermination
campaign appeared in any issues of The Daily Alert.

The principle American Jewish organizations have bombarded the US Congress,
influencing, intimidating and purchasing the craven so-called
'representatives' of the American people, the media and public notables with
lies in defense of Israel's total war to exterminate a people. Their public,
brazen, open complicity in genocide can be considered crime against
humanity:
The willful promotion of acts of a state designed to destroy an entire
people.

And yet these willing accomplices, these 'willing executioners' of state
mass
murder go uncontested within the US political class. One of their leading
mouthpieces in the incoming Obama Administration, Chief Presidential Adviser
David Axelrod, even cites an Obama campaign speech defending Israeli
assaults
on the people of Gaza.

Israel arrogantly repudiates all calls to end this mass murder, because
Israel
knows that 'its people' are still in control of US policy toward the Middle
East and will use their power in the new president's administration to block
any condemnation of this crime.

To date the entire human rights and anti-war movements have failed to even
mention, let along challenge, the most powerful propaganda and political
organizations, which influence US policy and manipulate the mass media in
favor of Israel's extermination campaign. They will play no restraining role
on Israel's totalitarian policies as long as its principle US backers are
free
to lie, manipulate and defend each and every crime.

There is little hope for an independent US Congressional policy as long as
Israel's war of extermination in Gaza can be defended by the Chairman of the
House Foreign Affairs Committee (and Zionist zealot) Congressman Howard
Berman
in the following terms: "Israel has a right, indeed a duty, to defend itself
in response to the hundreds of rockets and mortars fired from Gaza over the
past week. No government in world would sit by and allow its citizens to be
subjected to this kind of indiscriminate bombardment. The loss of innocent
life is a terribly tragedy and the blame for that tragedy lies with Hamas."
Thus Congressman Berman cynically omits the 2 years of Israel's embargo, the
daily 'targeted' assassinations of Palestinians, the 'targeted' missile
attacks against civilians, the land, sea and air blockades and the blatant
'targeted' destruction of the infrastructure of Gaza. No government, indeed
a
democratically elected Islamist government, can stand by while its people
are
starved and murdered into submission. But according to the respected
Congressmen Bermans of the world,only the lives of Jews matter, not the
growing thousands of murdered, dismembered and mutilated citizens of Gaza �
they do not count as people!

What is to be Done

Israel's crimes against humanity demand a public response: social action,
which will force it to cease and desist from its campaign to exterminate the
people of Gaza. Because the Jewish state has assaulted a vast array of
Palestinian social institutions, which resonate with those in our own
society,
we can and should mobilize them to condemn and boycott their counterparts in
Israel:

1.
We should urge the entire academic community to denounce Israel's
bombardment
of the Islamic University of Gaza and the total destruction of all of its
science facilities. An organized boycott of Israeli universities and all
academic exchanges, especially scientific, should become university policy
throughout the country. Special attention should be paid to the 450 US
university presidents, who in the recent past, denounced a call by British
academics for a boycott and who remain silent and complicit in the face of
Israel's total physical annihilation of all ten faculties for 20,000
Palestinian university students

2.
All American health workers, doctors, nurses, technicians, should organize
and
denounce Israel's medical embargo against the 1.5 million Palestinians
crowded
into the Gaza Strip. They must condemn Israel's bombardment of Gaza's
Children's Hospital, the neighborhood pharmacies and the attacks on any
transport of those critically wounded Palestinian victims of its aerial and
missile attacks. Medical personnel should raise the fundamental ethical
issues
regarding the collaboration of US medical personnel and programs with the
Jewish State's 'total war' policies of extermination.

3.
All citizens should demand the end of all US military aid to Israel,
especially F-16 fighter planes, Apache attack helicopters, missiles, 1000
pound 'bunker buster' bombs used by the Israeli armed forces on the civilian
infrastructure of Gaza and the murder and maiming of over 2,500
Palestinians,
civilians, civil servants, police and national militia. In pursuit of a
cutoff
of US military aid to Israel, every effort should be made to target and
denounce the most forceful, aggressive and successful Zionist advocates and
lobbyists who influence the elected members of the US Congress and White
House
on foreign military aid budgets. No progress in ending US military aid for
Israel's ethnic cleansing will succeed unless the peace movement and others
appalled by Israel's mass murder tackles the Zionist lobby head on. This
includes boycotts, rebuttals and demonstrations against the AIPAC, the
Jewish
Anti-Defamation League and the other 50 leading American Jewish
organizations,
which initiate and secure US governmental endorsement of Israel's
extermination policies.

4.
US religious institutions should forcefully denounce Israel's crimes against
humanity, including its demolition of 5 mosques, uniting all faiths
(Christian, Moslem, Buddhist) and especially reaching out to the tiny
minority
of rabbis and observant Jews willing to forthrightly denounce the
totalitarian
practices of the Israeli state.

5.
Port and long shore workers, sailors and other maritime workers and
officials
should boycott the handling of all trade with Israel and denounce its Navy's
violent illegal assault, in international waters, of civilian fishing boats
and vessels carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza. No ships carrying Israeli
products should be loaded or unloaded as long as Israel maintains its
criminal
military blockade of the port facilities of Gaza.

6.
Tens of millions of US citizens subject to the one-sided pro-Israel bias of
the electronic and print media, the lop-sided presentations of Zionist
'op-ed'
writers, 'news' reports and the self-styled Middle East experts, should
demand
equal time, coverage and reportage for non-Zionist specialists, analysts and
commentators. We should demand the end of euphemisms and fabrications, which
convert victims into aggressors and exterminators into victims.

We should wage a battle of ideas everywhere (in every public forum) against
the efforts by the Zionist Power Configuration to monopolize discussion over
the Israeli policy of genocide, to censor, intimidate and slander critics of

A patriotic nationwide campaign should demand that the Israel lobby,
especially AIPAC, come clean and register as a foreign agent of the State of
Israel. This might undermine the Lobby's appeal to American Jews, reduce its
influence over Congress and open up judicial processes and investigations
over
its abuse of tax-exemptions, money-laundering and lead to revelations over
its
treasonous procurement of confidential US state documents for a foreign
power.
There is a powerful political and legal basis for such a denial of the
'Lobby's' tax-exempt status and legality, apart from the transparent and
overwhelming evidence that all Zionist organizations act as transmission
belts
for Israeli state policies: In the early 1950's up to 1963, the forerunner
of
AIPAC was obligated to register as a foreign agent of the State of Israel.
More recently, an Israeli prosecutor presented evidence that the
Israeli-Jewish Agency and its US counterparts were laundering billions of
dollars especially for the funding of Israeli colonial settlements on
occupied
Palestinian land, condemned as illegal under international law.
Congressional
hearings, law suits and further published research would reveal the role of
the Lobby as a Fifth Column for the State of Israel against the interest of
the people of the United States.

Until we neutralize the pervasive power of the Zionist Power Configuration
in
all of its manifestations � in American public and civic life � and its deep
penetration of American legislative and executive offices, we will fall
short
of preventing Israel from receiving the arms, funding and political backing
to
sustain its wars of ethnic extermination.

When told that the great majority of the world's people are sickened and
incensed by Israel's mass murder of the citizens of Gaza, we can easily
imagine the contemptuous dismissal by Israel's top leaders, paraphrasing
Joseph Stalin: How many bombers, missiles, fighter planes and powerful
lobbies
do they (the outraged people of the world) have?

Israel recruits 'army of bloggers' to combat anti-Zionist Web sites

an "army of bloggers," to be made up of Israelis who speak a second
language, to represent Israel in "anti-Zionist blogs" in English,
French, Spanish and German.

The program's first volunteer was Sandrine Pitousi, 31, from Kfar
Maimon, situated five kilometers from Gaza. "I heard about the project
over the radio and decided to join because I'm living in the middle of
the conflict," she said.

Before hanging up the phone prematurely following a Color Red rocket
alert, Pitousi, who immigrated to Israel from France in 1993, said she
had some experience with public relations from managing a production
company.

"During the war, we looked for a way to contribute to the effort," the
ministry's director general, Erez Halfon, told Haaretz. "We turned to
this enormous reservoir of more than a million people with a second
mother tongue." Other languages in which bloggers are sought include
Russian and Portuguese.

Halfon said volunteers who send the Absorption Ministry their contact
details by e-mail, at me...@moia.gov.il, will be registered according to
language, and then passed on to the Foreign Ministry's media department,
whose personnel will direct the volunteers to Web sites deemed
"problematic."

Within 30 minutes of announcing the program, which was approved by the
Foreign Ministry on Sunday, five volunteers were already in touch,
Halfon said.

The 1936 Olympics

The story most repeated about Hitler and the 1936 Olympic Games in
Berlin, which were unquestionably put on as a political showcase for
Nazi Germany, is that Hitler refused to shake the hand of the American
Black athlete Jesse Owens after the latter had won a race. This myth
is extremely widespread: the Encarta Encyclopedia, issued by Microsoft
(1998 edition) states the following in its entry under Jesse Owens:

"Owens, Jesse (1913-80), one of the greatest track-and-field athletes
of all time . . . A member of the U.S. track team in the 1936 Olympic
Games, held in Berlin, Owens won four gold medals. He won the 100-m
dash in 10.3 sec, equaling the Olympic record; set a new Olympic and
world record of 20.7 sec in the 200-m dash; and won the running broad
jump with a leap of 26 ft 5I in., setting a new Olympic record. He was
also a member of the U.S. 400-m relay team that year, which set a new
Olympic and world record of 39.8 sec. Despite Owens' outstanding
athletic performance, German leader Adolf Hitler refused to
acknowledge his Olympic victories because Owens was black. Owens went
on to play an active role in youth athletic programs and later
established his own public relations firm. His autobiography, The

The reality was in fact substantially different: what happened was
that Hitler personally attended the first day of the track and field
competition on 2 August 1936, and did personally congratulate the
German athlete Hans Woellke, who became the first German to win a gold
medal in the Olympics since 1896.

Throughout the rest of the day, Hitler continued to receive Olympic
champions, German and non German, in his VIP box.

The next day, 3 August, the chairman of the International Olympic
Committee, Comte Baillet-Latour, approached Hitler early in the
morning and told the German leader that he had violated Olympic
protocol by having winners paraded to his box.

Hitler apologized and gave a promise that he would from then on
refrain from publicly congratulating any winners, German or otherwise.
During this day, Owens won his gold medals - and in line with the
Olympic Committee's ruling, Hitler did not shake his hand, or anybody
else's for that matter, at the games again.

It is therefore utterly false to claim that Hitler deliberately chose
to ignore Owens. In fact, in the very autobiography that the Encarta
Encyclopedia extract above refers to, The Jesse Owens Story, Owens
himself recounted how Hitler had stood up and waved to him:

"When I passed the Chancellor he arose, waved his hand at me, and I
waved back at him. I think the writers showed bad taste in criticizing
