and the side-effect victims were about 20 million in Russia...

a Russian protestant (of muslim origin, thus having already done a great step) told me this, a family tale
in the "patriotic war", their soldiers were in the last line of defense holding in front of Moscow, and things were going bad
so Stalin got the patriarch/metropolitan Sergius at his office, and ordered to "do something with the icons"
they placed several miraculous icons in warplanes, and flew along the line of fights
"and," said my friend, "never ever the Germans would enter that iconic fence!"
stalin was an ex-seminarian, he knew some tricks of it...
it's also the reason of my past anger (now I'm healed on that level) with the secretary of the local Russian bishop. It was not possible to have him
understanding that letting the people without catechetic school was an enormous mistake. And that non-Russians had the need of being Orthodox, but
not to become Russians - thus Liturgy, culture, and so on..
Never admited, he answered always "we have a Liturgy that made million of saints, it will suffice"
my answer was always "yeah, sure, Stalin is a great saint, he was twice a day at church, it really suffice.."
back to Stalin, of course the evil guy knew how to make good use of the spiritual power of the Church for reaching his own political goals.
well, as long as the Church could preserve more human beings, and be able to show them in facts how powerfull the Faith is, even when served by
unworthy servants...
have a blessed Sunday
