What's so great about monotheism, anyway?

I heard on the news this AM that the "pray for Oklahoma" hashtag is number
one on Facebook. Leaving aside, for the moment, how discouraging it is
that so many people still think that prayer is good for anything besides
self-flattery, what good is it to pray to the same god who sent the
tornado to begin with???? At least, with polytheism, you could speculate
that some OTHER, "bad guy" god, sent the tornado, and you can pray to the
"good guy" god for protection/relief/salvation.

In ancient times when one civilization defeated another everyone assumed that
the victor's god(s) were more powerful and accepted them. The extraordinary
twist with the Hebrew god was the Hebrews' belief that their god was not weak,
but vindictive, and intentionally chose to punish his subjects by permitting
their enemy to defeat them in battle, or allow other hardships. Of course, a
particular individual can say to himself that he was good but it was some
others in the group that brought God's wrath, and of course we see a lot of this
going on today, finding the scapegoats - gays, atheists, premarital sex etc.
But even if you can't figure out the reason why God caused or allowed it to
happen, don't worry, one is off the hook for making sense of it because man is
not supposed to understand everything that God does.

Not withstanding the above, prayer can be a self soothing therapy for situations
where there is nothing one can actually do, and a comfort to whom the prayer is
directed, because the recipient perceives the empathy. Instead of "I will pray
for you," one can say, "you will be in my thoughts."

It's all the gay abortions.

Monotheism is in no way superior to polytheism. In fact, it's
sillier; if one god can exist, why can't others? Life forms are not
known to exist in the singualr. Monotheism is nothing but conceit.

It's the ultimate "my god is bigger than your god" because that
doesn't leave room for the other guy's god(s),

No only that, but you can tell much more entertaining myths with a whole
family of gods than you can with a single one. How many times can you
listen to someone tell you about how Jesus died for your sins? Once is
more than enough.

I've always thought that monotheism caught on because it was easier
placating one god than many.

I'm amused by the curious artifacts in the sacred texts as the Hebrews
evolved from henotheism to monotheism. A god that wrassles Jacob to a
