Does anybody have good information/examples/quotes/etc as to how
classical Latin (sort of 1st century AD) varies from "Church Latin".
I'm particularly interested in the main differences (semantically,
idiomatically, syntactically, stylistically, etc) between the Latin
used by Roman writers and the Latin in the Ordo Missae of 1570:

Any contributions on the topic, Markie?
You never dealt with this one here:

Alioquin, si de his quae Ecclesia docet quae vult tenet et quae vult

That's Catholicism, DH. You should read something about it:

Now I know you SAY you've read this. You CLAIM to have read this. But
you don't really seem to have done more than skimmed it, or

What--you could not answer his original question concerning Latin?
Buny
I killfiled him, 'sum', for rewriting something I had posted and
trying to pass it off as something I wrote.
Say, for example, someone wrote: The toothbrush has a built-in
electronic feedback system that automatically adjusts its speed to
maintain peak performance. Our expertise in integrated product
development helped propel the toothbrush from the idea stage to store
shelves in just 12 months. . .
And he quoted it back as: The toothbrush has a built-in store shelves
Well, someone might think it funny. But it's just not the same thing.
Someone with your 'comprehension' might be able to see that, 'sum'.
Since you have done the same to me innumerable times, I find it amazing that
you are so upset about that!

Not me, you liar. Not me. I've never done that. But DH has done this
on more than one occasion. In fact, I think this is the third time I
had to killfile him, for EXACTLY the same reason - of rewriting
something I wrote and trying to pass it off as mine. I've never done
that, and particularly for the reasons I've repeatedly explained,
which someone like you wouldn't understand. You don't appreciate
Usenet, and would prefer to just dump all over it, both you and 'sum',
and assorted trolls crawling all over the ngs. Your sort is probably
in the majority at least on the political and religious ngs. You have
the lib media and the various lib institutions. And you don't like the
idea that people who don't agree with your 'groupthink' can even post
to something that Usenet, that's read around the world.

'Sum' - 'sum-sum'. Let me remind you of what I wrote, just previously:
Say, for example, someone wrote: The toothbrush has a built-in
electronic feedback system that automatically adjusts its speed to
maintain peak performance. Our expertise in integrated product
development helped propel the toothbrush from the idea stage to store

Only in your own mind have I ever done what DH has now routinely done
to me:
Say, for example, someone wrote: The toothbrush has a built-in

maintain peak performance. Our expertise in integrated product
development helped propel the toothbrush from the idea stage to store

Well, someone might think it funny. But it's just not the same thing.

Is this answering my question about what the plural form of the Latin
"Planetarium" is?

Possibly, but why bother? I've done it time and again only to have
you ignore it completely or to snip out key bits of it (which, I
believe, you accused sum of not too long ago) whenever making a
quasi-reply. On the other hand, I could begin a thread arguing the
relative merits of tiramisu against cheesecake. I give the odds of an
honest reply from you concerning evolution to be the same in either

Not me. I'm asking you to simply say what you believe. You, rather,
are ignoring me. Don't project.
You know what they say about that:
"[His] outstanding defense mechanism is one commonly called
PROJECTION. It is a technique by which the ego of an individual
defends itself against unpleasant impulses, tendencies or
characteristics by denying their existence in himself while he
attributes them to others." . . .
"He himself tells us in so many words that he skipped through this
material and only took out those parts which were useful to him. In
other words, he was not reading and listening in order to become
educated sufficiently to form a rational judgment of the problem. This
would have been a violation of his earlier inhibition on thinking. He
read only in order to find additional justification for his own inner
feelings and convictions and to rationalize his projections. He has
continued this technique up to the present time. He does a great deal
of reading on many diverse subjects but he never forms a rational
opinion in the light of the information but only pays attention to
those parts which convince him that he was right to begin with."
Call it a 'critical study' of a figure from history.
>>>Don't project.
Don't project. I'm not you. I'm not some nutty lib and card-carryin
Dem. And I'm sure not Robert A, who thinks the world came to an end

FL election.

A pudding consisting of mascapone cheese, buiscuit, coffee and
chocolate. Italian. Yum. Makes a nice post-cheescake dessert.

I like the way you think!
How do you explain the protective adaptations that are very clear and happen
in a very short time period? Bacteria very rapidly (sometimes within very
few weeks) change to become resistant to antibiotics, for example. Over a
very long period of time, it is very probable to change so much as to be
unrecognizable relative to the original bacterium.

Oh, it is a very delicious Italian dessert. It is composed of one layer of

Really, it *is* a kind of cheesecake--marscapone-style.

But then not because Bush won, but because at various points it looked

Alright.

But see, that's where you just aren't thinking. You presume that you
can generalize, without end, and that a difference in kind remains
just that, or even doesn't, but that at least the means are unaffected
by complexity. But we all know, in any endeavor, that increasing
complexity can require complete reengineering of method. You just
can't generalize to a large scale, and expect everything to work as it
did on the small. It's just one example.
That's why, Liz, you need to have a clear notion of just what IS . .
the 'fact of', and The Theory of, before you start to lecture people
about the 'certainty of'.
Can you see that, Liz?
Does that make sense?
Let me know.

BTW, did Mr. Cranmer pay for his ticket to the Schismatic Hootenanny?
Dear Mr. Cranmer:
Although your super-expertise in translating Joohnsonese into
Johnsonspeak is formidible and legendary, I would respectfully propose
an alternate translation, which clears up some of the ambiguity,
especially in the your rendering of "he Theo of, for tart to let pee."
IMO, that phrase is crucial to the full comprehension... here.
>Bee, hat's here thinking. You pee hat you

High 5, mate!
Dear Herr von Hildebrand,
Thank you for submitting this translation. It is, however, tainted
with modernism and unholy 'reform'. What neither you not Mr Cranmer
seem to understand is that the Mass as we knew it is dead. _I_ didn't
say that, Mr Mark Johnson did. On that background, I would propose the
following translation:
tea's here you just rent. You poo tender in main hat, or even beans
are affected by cox. But al now, in any neat hat ceasing
cox can require peter engineering of me. You just are sale, and pee
very thing tit did on the small. It's just one ample hat, Liz, you
need to have a clear hat IS . . tact, and he for you tart to pee
at he aint Liz?
Does that make Pee.
Gaudeamus igitur!
M. Lefebvre
(and why the heck am I not up for beatificattion . . . here?)
Dear Monsieur Lefebvre:
Your genius and writing ability notwithstanding, I must take offense
at your use of the phrase "unholy reform." If the Holy Father says it,
then we do it.
And, we must also, in our work as super-experts.... here, take into
account Mr. Johnson's compilation of selected verses from Catholic
theology. His bravery in rescuing himself and Holy Catholicism after
his church was hijacked by terrorists is quite remarkable. In light of
this, I would submit the following translation, given from a place of
love and charity, wherefrom Mr. Johnson always posts:
>te he yo sent. You poo tee in man hat, or vans
>are ted cox. But ow, in any net hat sing
>cox can ree pee gee ring of me. You just are ale, and pee
>ring tit did on the mall. It's so ample hat, Liz, you
>need to have a ear hat IS . . tact, and he for you tart to pee
>he tiz?
>Does hat make see me Pee.
Oh, and you haven't been beatified because I got there first, you
'Catholic' you.

You should worry more about evolutionism, than insulting me out of
frustration because you have nothing to say about, evolutionism -
which you so zealously defend.
Fair?
Which, according to exclusive reports that came through last night
CET, is just splendid. maf sounded very jolly.

Sweety, he proves with each and every post that he is wrong. And he
knows he is wrong. He just doesn't like it.
Greetings from your Godmouse, August, btw. He's just had a snack and
has now curled up with his buddy Heinrich and they're napping.
Good idea, btw.

I am jolly well, thank you for asking. No more sodding hunting for the
coffee in the early morning. The coffee will be ready for me, thanks
to the automatic timer thing. Just like this morning: I got up around
7:30, and bo and lehold!!! COFFEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am no longer an ugly sodding grouch in the morning, who can't even
speak or do anything besides extend his middle finger (It's true, just
ask DH. Just keep in mind that he's no Prince Charming, either)
How forgetful of me not to include _that_ little caveat... here.
Although -- you would think everyone would be aware by now of MJ's
little rectus-cranius-locutus problem.... here.
Good job. I only splorked.

Enough chocolate can drown out the bad taste of almost everything....OK, its
a "girl thing", but it works....(though I am not awfully sure of that last
one--and am not willing to try). Maybe it is tied in to XX chromosomes?

Whoops, I transposed the "r"--it is supposed to be mascarpone. It is an
Italian soft cheese. Think about cream cheese. Now think about the former
with heavy cream added to the point that the cheese is the consistency of
soft butter. Now add a *hint* of acidity. It is the cheese that I prefer
to use when I make cannoli. It can be hard to find, since it has a very
short shelf-life, but it is worth it. It's probably easier to get on your
side of the pond, since it is made in Lombardy.
