Bar's nude women upset church
The Anglican Church is determined not to allow a bar with performing
nude women to open in a building next to Hobart's St David's Cathedral.
The church says the proposed Players Sports Bar would be in breach of
the lease, which includes moral covenants and restrictions on the use
of the building.
The Dean of the Cathedral, Dr Lindsay Stoddart, says the new tenants
failed to tell the church what kind of business they would operate.
"We've got to ask ourselves is this what the ordinary man and woman in
Hobart wants," Dr Stoddart said.
"The church has a difficulty with it but we will comply with the lease.
"If it's not legal than obviously we'll take the appropriate action to
stop it."
Dr Stoddart says nude bars offend women's dignity.
"The last thing I would want would be any of my children or my friends'
children performing before half-drunk men in a place like that."
The licensee Grant Brown says the sports bar would operate responsibly
and adults are free to decide whether or not to attend.
He plans to open the bar at 5:00pm this Friday.
The Temple Place building has previously been a blue light disco, a
jazz bar and even a gay nightclub.
