ST. PETERSBURG, May 25. St. Petersburg's oldest church – the Trinity
Cathedral should be restored with a view to meeting the forthcoming
city's bicentenary anniversary, the St. Petersburg Council for
Preservation of Cultural Heritage decided today.

The Trinity Cathedral was the first church built in St. Petersburg at
the beginning of XIIIth century. The church designed by the Italian
architect Domenico Tresini was erected at the entrance to Sts. Peter and
Paul Fortress. In 1750 the Cathedral was demolished with fire. The idea
to restore the historical church first came from the Orthodox community
of St. Petersburg in 1991.
