Ukrainian schismatics ask Bartholomaios I to recognize 'the Kievan
Patriarchate' as Local Church

Moscow, December 16, Interfax - The Kievan Patriarchate, which is not
recognized in the Orthodox world, has appealed to Patriarch
Bartholomaios of Constantinople to recognize this schismatic structure
as 'the Local and Autocephalous Church of Ukraine'.

The authors of the appeal, signed by Archbishop Dimitry Rudyuk, a vicar
of 'Patriarch' Philaret, and People's Deputy Lilia Grigorovich,
maintain that the recognition of the Kievan Patriarchate by
Constantinople and other Local Churches 'is expected by millions of
the Orthodox' in Ukraine.

According to the schismatics, it 'is the largest Church in our
country', while the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow
Patriarchate 'is approximately half as large according to the number
of the faithful'. This statement is made with a reference to
'numerous sociological surveys'.

At the same time, according to the official state statistics, the
Ukrainian Orthodox Church is three times as large as the Kievan
Patriarchate according to the number of parishes and five times as
large according to the number of monasteries and twenty times as large
according to the number of monastics. Ukraine does not reckon
parishioners by head.

According to experts, it is difficult to understand the grounds on
which the Kievan Patriarchate followers base their expectations. During
the recent celebrations on the occasion of the 70th birthday of the UOC
head, Metropolitan Vladimir, Archbishop Gregory of Thyateira, a
representative of the Patriarch of Constantinople, stated that
Constantinople recognizes only the canonical Ukrainian Church.

Interfax was informed by the Moscow Patriarchate Department for
External Church Relations that as far back as four years ago, on
December 14, 2001, the official letter of the Synod of Constantinople
stated that Patriarch Bartholomaios 'resolutely refutes' the
allegations made by Ukrainian Parliament Deputy P. Movchan a month
earlier that he received assurances in Istanbul that 'the Ukrainian
Church will be granted autocephaly and 'Patriarch' Philaret's
group will be recognized as canonical'.

The autocephaly of Moscow, just like its American child, the
Obschina Crestwood Association, was always dubious. And after what
Alexey just pulled off in Jerusalem, follwoing up on the
Nesselrode-Uspensky projects, did he think there wouldn't be
retaliation?

This is actually funny - bitchy, but funny.

Just for you, Vasos,

Shortly after the deal for the autocephally which gave away the Church
of Japan to the godless communists, many of us decided it would be best
to leave the OCA, but we floundered around for a while more seriously
than normal checking out the Metropolia. In that period of time, one
thing I did was attend a rather fancy Russian ball in New York. Kind of
an expensive affair and though I was poor, I could sew. I knew it was
the Nativity fast, of course, and knew we shouldn't be dancing, but how
many chances like that does a girl get? I went to the garment district
and got the most beautiful fabric I had sewn in my life( and wish I
still had kept), a real French brocade with gold thread. Felt like a
boyarina and gotta say that my creation, complete with a lot of
handwork, was one of the best contenders there that year. This is just
to put what I'm about to say in context. There were wonders hard to
experience today. Most of the clergy we all knew and loved from all
three cathedrals in NY were invited as well as, of course, all the
theologians from St. Vlad's. Some of the other young people had gotten
involved in this grown up affair making decorations or even hand
painting table cloths. Some of us had been involved with some of the
food. There was a band that could play Georgian music and the Georgians
there were, as always, the best dancers in any Orthodox festal event.
THere was just something that they do with shoulders, like the Greek Laz
and Pontiaki, that seems so, well, wonderful I cheated and accepted a
glass of wine. But it was the weekend, and it wasn't like it was veliki
post. Anyway, most of the stuff was posni or almost so, or at least fish.

To get back to the main point, some of us got into a huge argument with
John Meyendorf over the autocephally deal, especially one guy who had
lived in Japan. It came down to when you do or do not compromise morals
and ethics under what conditions. His take was that it would eventually
be worth it and that it seemed we had all become Cathari, although he
didn't use the term. It went on and on for about a hour and all the
while, being very careful to choose only those, the Right Reverend munch
pirozhok after pirozhok, making sure he got the ones with the meat filling.

In the end, he was probably right to broker the deal, right? After all,
those same people are still in clerical office, after a sermon or two of
recanting their pasts, after martyring thousands of Orthodox
Christians. But, what's done is done, American OCA is kinda free of
them in the way that the Patriarchal and ROCOR (or whatever acronym
today) are not and might never be. For that distance, he was right and
monetarily, sending the kinda dough that the GOA sends to support Bart
is not necessary under the arrangement. So, in the end, there's a
caveat emptor. The OCA can complain about the schismatic character of
certain churches, and so too the GOA. And with such a liberal legacy,
the meat eater of yesterday's Nativity lent is the revered theologian
of today.

What kind of Russian ball is the least important aspect of what I talked
about, Alex, so never mind that and go back to boys talking to boys
