The following is a sampling of the reaction from the NASCAR community to
news of the passing of 19-year-old Adam Petty following a crash Friday:
"It is difficult to express our sadness over the passing of Adam Petty. On
behalf of the entire NASCAR family, we extend our hearts and prayers to his
parents, Kyle and Pattie, his grandparents, Richard and Lynda, and the
entire Petty family. The Pettys are an integral part of the sport of NASCAR.
The entire NASCAR community will miss Adam Petty." -- NASCAR president Bill
France.
"The brightest stars often shine for a brief period of time. I'm glad my
last memory of Adam was only a week ago, laughing and cutting up as we took
part in the annual Kyle Petty Charity Motorcycle Ride Across America. Adam
was always smiling." -- Eddie Gossage, general manager of Texas Motor
Speedway, where Petty made his NASCAR Winston Cup Series debut last month.
"Adam and I were joking around this morning right before practice, and then
to have this happen is unreal. This hurts. I was on the motorcycle ride with
Kyle the week before last and we raised a lot of money for charity. The
Pettys do a lot for other people, and it hurts that we can't do anything for
them right now." -- fellow NASCAR Winston Cup Series and NASCAR Busch Series
Grand National Division driver Steve Park.
"He provided one of the most memorable highlights in our 40-year history
when he won here in his ARCA and superspeedway debut in October 1998. That
was truly a special moment to see him with the entire Petty family in
Victory Lane. This untimely loss will touch all of us deeply for a long time
to come." -- H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler, president and general manager of Lowe's
Motor Speedway at Charlotte.
"To have someone so young and with such a bright future ahead of him die
like this is a hard thing to swallow. The Petty family has helped build this
sport. It goes back to Lee, Richard and Kyle, and I know it would have
continued with Adam. They are almost like royalty in our sport. For a family
that has done so much to this sport and then to have this happen is just
terrible." -- NASCAR Winston Cup Series driver Johnny Benson.
"I remember when he was born, and not long after that sitting on his
granddaddy's shoulders in Victory Lane at the Daytona 500. He looked like he
was a natural there, and I've got the feeling he started making plans to get
back to Victory Lane for the Daytona 500 as fast as he could." -- NASCAR
Winston Cup Series driver Sterling Marlin.

I mean, it's sad, but isn't it a tad off-topic here??? As we say in the
aviation industry, chop-chop.

Christ is Risen!
Do we only pray for the souls of card carrying members of the <insert Orthodox
church of choice> ? (I'm not talking about commemorations in the church, but
private prayer here.) We should not be so wrapped up in petty disputes (no pun
intended) that we fail to respond to someone's grief.
As for the connection to Orthodoxy, Alban and several others on this NG are
racing fans. We're Orthodox. He quite rightly thought to share this with a group
of people who *should* IMHO be offering up their prayers for both Adam's soul
and for God to support the Petty family during this difficult time.
Alban, thank you for posting this. I had missed it somehow and am devastated to
hear of the Petty family's loss.

Well, Missy, that is easily taken care of, isn't it. If you do NOT care for the
secular nature of Alban's posts, then don't read them. Easy, n'est-ce pas? And
post something that DOES edify and DOES contribute to the spiritual benefit of
ALL. So far, you have done NOTHING but whine, bitch, and just generally point your
finger at each and everyone of us. Try something positive for a change. I've read
that Dr Weil (free on MSN) has an herbal remedy for the persecution complex. You
should check it out.

Grow up!
James, you are like the little second-grader pulling the pony-tails of the
girl sitting at the desk in front of him. Why don't you just leave ME alone
and save your twisted flirtations for your wife! I did not come into this
group to get a play-by-play analysis from you on each and every one of my
posts. Go fixate on someone else who might need your attention . . .
PLEASE.> From: James <myad...@bottom.com>

As a matter of fact, you have now the distinguished honour of the
kill file. You have nothing to add to the discussions other than your whining
attitude. I've no need nor desire to continue this dialogue, since I suspect
it is a bid for attention. Good-bye. (and get some counseling... do yourself
a favor).
Thank you, thank you, thank you, oh all-merciful God!

"Before we judge the lobotomist of old too severely, we
should go to the nearest street grate and see how we are
dealing with our mental health crisis today."
Bryan, I mentioned this earlier, but you either disagree or
didn't read my post. Several of the *Orthodox Members of
the Group* (the OMG) have followed the Petty family racing
careers. I doubt that Alban has to hand a list of all the
OMG racing fans. Posting the news of Adam's passing allowed
those of us who care about such things to pray for Adam and
his family.
I truly don't understand the position that I see time and
again on this list: "If you don't belong to <xyz
patriarchate/are not Orthodox> then don't waste my time." I
believe that since only God, in his mercy, knows the
disposition of any soul, the best we can do is pray for
everyone. I don't think that Orthodoxy is about patting
ourselves on the back because *we* are in the know and all
those *others* are forever lost...
The implication that posting info on the passing of an
Orthodox individual is OK but not the passing of an
Heterodox is appalling. It sounds like people are saying "I
thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners,
unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican. I fast twice
in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess and here I
am coming and thanking Thee" or "I'm Orthodox, why should I
waste my time on some Heterodox person?"
Is this really what you mean to say? Can you truly believe
that any prayer is wasted? Are you telling God whom He can
and can't save?
Yours (truly puzzled),
Ann Lovell
Thank you Lisa for your sanity. I believe that as Orthodox Christians that
we should be praying for the whole world, not just favoured individuals. The
tragic death of Adam Petty, who was Kyle's hope to carry the Petty mantle
through a fourth generation in NASCAR had to be devastaing to the whole
family. And, for those who do not know, the Petty family is a very tight
family and could be used as an example of real family values in action.
O Lord, grant rest to the soul of Adam Petty, and consolation to Kyle and
Patti and their children, and all the Petty family and give them the
strength to overcome this sad event.
