Church of England School Suspends Muslim Teacher for Refusing to Remove
Veil
A Muslim woman has been suspended by a Church of England Junior School
in West Yorkshire, after she refused to remove her veil whilst teaching
young children in lessons.

A Muslim woman has been suspended by a Church of England junior school
in West Yorkshire, after she refused to remove her veil whilst teaching
young children in lessons.

A council spokeswoman has confirmed the decision, which has come about
because Aishah Azmi, 24, refused to heed to requests from the school to
remove the veil, after pupils complained that they found it hard to
understand her during English language lessons.

The young Muslim woman was told by the school that she could wear the
veil in corridors and the staff room at Headfield Church of England
Junior School in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, but must remove it when
teaching.

A spokesman for Kirklees Council said, "I can confirm she has been
suspended. The matter has gone before an employment tribunal and we are
waiting for the result. It would be inappropriate to comment
further."

The tribunal heard the case in September and is due to announce its
decision within the next two weeks.

Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik backed the school's decision, saying: "In
schools the top priority has got to be the education of our children. I
fully support the decision of the education authority and the school in
requesting the classroom assistant remove her veil when teaching
primary school children.

"I believe the education authority has bent over backwards to be
accommodating and has been extremely reasonable and sensible in the
decision it has come to. There is no religious obligation whatsoever
for Muslim women to cover themselves up in front of primary school
children."

The school educates 529 pupils aged between 7 to 11, and is known to
have many students from different ethnic origins where English is not
used as a first language.

An Ofsted report carried out in February 2006 said: "Most of the
children are of Pakistani or Indian heritage, and a few are from a wide
variety of ethnic backgrounds, including white British. The first
languages spoken by most children are Panjabi, Gujarati and Urdu, and
many children are still learning to speak English."

Emphasising that the decision was purely for the good of the school's
students, Kirklees Council's children's services spokesman, Jim Dodds,
said Ms Azmi's suspension was "nothing to do with religion".

He said, "We are simply trying to ensure that our children get the
best possible education. Both pupils and teachers raised concerns
because they were finding it difficult to make out what she was saying
during lessons.

"We have a lot of pupils who do not speak English as a first language
and you have to be able to see people's lips move when you are being
taught. We asked this young lady to remove her veil when she was
teaching English language, but she refused."

Mr Dodds said that even if Azmi won her case the council would not
alter its stance.

"Our only concern is that the children are taught properly."

Good! But why only "suspend" her? What business does a militant Moslem
have teaching in a supposedly Christian school?

Perhaps some animals are more worthy of receiving communion then you.
Look in the mirror. Why do you care so much who receives communion? You
trivialize the sacrament. You want to know why I don't care? Look at
you. If you think I am damaging the faith, look at yourself. You are
doing far more damage to the faith than I could ever dream of doing.

Again, I disrespected my boundaries and those of my bishops in his
opinion and he excommunicated me as a result of his false convictions.
He is entitled to his false convictions and he is entitled to make
decisions on those false convictions. I can not override his decision
making process. I can and am deciding to obey him. At least, he, unlike
my ex husband, gives me something to obey, and I am happy for that. I
need his authority in my life so I am submitting to it like or not.
He does not want to give it to him so I may not have it. It is his alone
to give or take away and he has taken it away from me. That is why. He
made the choice and I have to go along with it.

I should have clarified. I approve of gay and lesbian priests and
priestesses and bishops and bishopettes ***in the Anglican church***
Who am I to judge them? I do not know them?
Subdeacon is *determined* to blacken my name on the Internet because I
will not submit to *him*. I will not. There is only one man who I am
accountable to right now, and that is? My bishop. Get it? Understand?
Not subdeacon. And I was not excommunicated because I am a heretic. I
was excommunicated because I did not respect my boundaries nor those of
my bishop. It is an interpersonal problem, just like Metropolitan Herman
and Father Rodian are having an ******interpersonal problem******

Those men have known each other for years. My bishop and I are very
close friends. So, you see?
Interpersonal problem, ****not**** heresy.
Subdeacon does not seem to know anything about ****interpersonal
relationships****
Odd, because religion is all about an interpersonal relationship with?
God. That's right kids. Religion 101. And subdeacon has? Failed!
Any one want to mentor me in this group? I need one. Thanks.

Wrong. The Anglicans are not Orthodox. I respect the Anglicans. Whom am
I to put my beliefs on them? That is? ****Religious fascism****,
Subdeacon. This subdeacon is a? Stalinist!
Once again exerting his might to? Blacken my name!
Guess what? His jurisdiction is a big fat bully trying to take over the
Orthodox Church with OCL and SCOBA. In other words: Orthodox Christian
Laity and Standing Councils of Orthodox Bishops in America. They are
like the Borg of the Orthodox Church. They are like a bulldozer and a
battering ram and a juggernaut, determined to plow down anything and
everything in their way! And apparently I am in their way. Good. I am
not going anywhere. I can take it. They are going to get exhausted
trying to mow me over. I have very strong convictions.

My obedience to my bishop has nothing to do with this newsgroup. It has
everything to do with my boundaries and his boundaries. It is not for
you to say what he is doing to me. That is none of your business. Only
three people know the truth: my bishop, my self, and my friend.

Please stop this.

Al is a regular and frequent poster to this NG. His posts concern many
different topics. He rarely mentions Anglicans and Anglicanism. In any
case, his opinions are his own and he is entitled to them.

You, on the other hand, only appear here to exchange insults and abuse.

A while ago, I asked Al to refrain from mentioning your name in his
posts to avoid drawing you here, and he was kind enough to oblige. But
now it seems that anything he says about Anglicans or Anglicanism will
cause you to reappear for yet another hostile exchange.

If you are going to remain here, why not post some material that you
consider interesting and/or positive? Why not involve yourself in
rational conversations if posters say things that you disagree with?
And yes, I know there has been a lot of bad behaviour in this group. As
I have told you before, that is the reality of Usenet.

If, on the other hand, you are only going to appear from time to time
to fire insults at Al, then you are a troll, pure and simple.

Please (and particularly if you really are an Anglican priest) stop
this.

Dear "Bdb"

Let the truth be known - and it is plain to see
if one 'wants' to see it - that my replies to Al
are what he wants from me - they are fodder
for him to feed his need to keep his cyberspace
fires alight against his desingnated internet targets.

He needs attention and loves it when people
like you to run to his defense. Just cross him
Bdb.... and find out what I mean .

But, maybe you are"Al Green" in disguise ????
I don't think so..... but one can't help but think
that could be a reality he would not pass up. Over
the years he has posted by various internet addresses.

Talk about Trolling !!!!

Al's cyberspace antics are well attested to on this nsg.
He is intolerant of any view not his own. And constantly
keeps barking away at them .So much for one's opinion -
so long as it is Al's ?

He fully knows well what their response will be and feeds his
ego on them with his replies and posts.

His constant replies to Nick Cobb, OK and to many others
who do not post any longer, are examples of his denigrating
and disgusting conduct and humiliating name calling - all in
the name of Christ and of Orthodoxy...??????

I have a deep interest in Orthodoxy and thank God Almighty
that I know Al does not represent the genuine Orthodox Way
and Practice I have exerienced in my social and spiritual relations
with many Orthodox Priests, two Bishops and countless Laity
over the past 25 years here in Montreal .

Bdg my responses to Al are out of a profound sadness and disgust
concerning his so called "orthodox" examples shown here.He has every
right to his own opinions on anything - even on me . But why must
one's Personhood - which is in God's Image - have to be defiled by him?
Let him disagree with Nick Cobb - but, why call him "bitch slapped' if
even that were true? Why make inuendos concerning him - or O.K
or whomever else ....!?

I won't go on any more and I am sorry if my responses have genuinely
upset some on this nsg. It certainly is NOT my desire to do so. But some
people like Al (and I am sure this will 'tickle his fancy' by saying it)
can
'cut to the quick ' and cause knee jerk reactions...!!!!

I do not dislke Al the person - how could I I don't know him at all ..
just the "Persona" he displays here in cyberspace.

Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa.

Al carry on. I sure you will ..... !

And you will do all in your power to goad me to respond .

No more.

You have lost....

I battle no more with you

God bless you, Al

Yours in Christ

That would be pretty simple to setup. It would take about an hour to

Even so, please jut ignore her. Thanks.

Thank you Fr. Fred.

The issues of inappropriate posting and trolling have troubled many of
us who follow this group. Unfortunately, the options are few.
Personally, I would favour a moderated newsgroup, but I recognize that
there are significant disadvantages to this approach, among them the
fact that suitable and willing volunteers must be found to act as
moderators.

So we stumble on, trying to have the occasional meaninful discussion on
Orthodox topics in the midst of a lot of objectionable noise. From what
I have seen of Usenet, however, we are actually in better shape than
many (most?) NGs. Usenet is a rough forum and it attracts some very odd
people.

As someone who has a longstanding interest in Orthodoxy, I would
encourage you to stay and participate in the threads that interest you.
I suspect that you have much to teach us.

We have all had to develop a certain "insensitivity" to posters who
shock or offend us. When I am convinced that I have identified a
genuine troll, I refrain entirely from responding to his/her posts, and
usually don't even bother to read them.

In any case, thank you again for your careful reply.

adjusted poster. Why do you think he was defrocked? Why do you think he
has bounced from one Protestant church after another until he found some
bishop he snookered into making him a deacon then realizing his great
mistake? This is not a normal person! His attacks against me and my
family (much of which the readers here will never fully know) are lies,
lies and more lies. He has attacked and defamed priests, bishops and
patriarchs and continues in all of his gossip, lies and rumors.

So, Fred T.T, what did you expect from such a person?

That's not the point. BT pointed the way to a.r.c.e.o. from the Indiana
List. He warned against reading it because of the flame wars. I did not
heed bt's advice, as usual. That is why our relationship broke down,
because I would not follow his advice and bt got sick and tired of me so
he dumped me.
I just picked up The Internet for Dummies for free today. I am learning.
I am a dummy when it comes to the Internet. It's not the point of the
servers. It's the interest. Why? Who is in Siberia that cares about my
writing? China? America? What's the point of that website? I want it
down. I don't want my daughter's school district finding my writing. A
friend of mine just got tapped by the courts for his blogs. I don't want
that to happen to me for my writing. Get it? That's why I used nyms.
Now, the Indiana List does not allow nyms. So, that is where I came out
initially. And guess whose radar screen that is? BT's. I showed up on
his radar, just like Leo Tolstoy showed up on the radar of the Holy
Synod of his time.
Now, I was sent to the Indiana List by Pokrov. And BT thought that I was
associated with them. I am not. You see, a queen in a chess game for one
year now. All because of CSB. Now do you understand?

Even moreso, the messages are *broadcast* into many mailboxes, and it's
even possible that they are redirected to another list from that list.
Again, trivial to setup.

As for UseNet posts, they are stored on thousands of servers around the
world, and some archive even with the supposed 'no-archive' tag set. No
server has to honor that tag, just as most servers don't honor cancel
messages. Once you post something to UseNet, you have to assume that
it is around forever, and is seen by all.

Only a very foolish person would send ANYTHING to ANYONE on the internet
that they didn't want to get out. The recipient of an email may do anything
they want with it. Legality doesn't matter - once it's out there, it's out
there.

I understand that BT did what he did because he did not approve of me
writing about sexuality in a feminist group. He thinks I am not properly
representing his church. What about all his public talk of orgies and
sex toys and thongs and deep throat and Henry Miller? Oh, I know, double

For the third time I will break this down for you.
That website states my names, my nyms, my deanery, my diocese, my
jurisdiction, my religion, my conversion and my excommunication. Why?
2. The website started with my writing in a feminist group. Why? The
archives were closed to the public after I joined. Membership requires
approval.
3. BT cross posted my writing from that group in an Orthodox group. Why?
BT is a *censor* and he *censured* me. Get it. Liberal man? Ha! Ultra
conservative that BT.
4. Usenet came *much* later in the game on that website. Check the order
of groups. It started out with messages from groups that require
approval *and* membership for the archives.
5. My server cancels messages. <eg>
6. Foolish is inaccurate. Naive is accurate.

Conclusion: Some man is pimping my mind. But I already said that. Why?
What's he getting paid? I want some. Some one is implying I am an
intellectual slut. Witness the double headers on that website. What's
that all about? Placing double headers on the website of an Orthodox
Christian? I know who approves of sex toys in the Orthodox Church. Do you?

Possibly earning a living teaching the subjects she was hired to
teach. Would you say "good" if a Christian teacher in a Moslem
school were required to remove a cross in order to teach arithmetic
or geography to the students? Or *required* to wear a veil?

Learning to know people of different cultures can
only lead to greater tolerance when the exposure is in a
positive social context. Was there any evidence this woman was
indoctrinating the children into Islam? If not, then why demand
she violate her religious principles if she is not violating
those of her employer or her pupils?

Actually, it wouldn't raise my eyebrows at all if a Christian woman in a
Muslim school was required to wear a veil. You want the job, you conform to
the requirements of it.

And it's perfectly reasonable to require that a teacher allow her students
to see her face.
