Church must oppose holocaust of the unborn

I have read, re-read and even listened to Bishop Jenky's homily,
trying to understand why his critics are so upset. Perhaps it is
because the truth is upsetting.

The bishop, contrary to public opinion, did not actually compare
President Obama to Bismarck, Clemenceau, Hitler or Stalin. He pointed
out historical realities and issued a warning that the path we are on
bears a striking resemblance to the persecution, endured by the
church
under those leaders he named. As I read it, he was offering stern
warning and fraternal correction, based on historical fact, to those
who require it. Fools ignore the lessons that history provides; wise
people learn from them.

Our nation is moving rapidly toward a centralized, socialized form of
government. As part of this movement, our president believes that it
is possible for him to mandate that religious institutions pay for
something that is contrary to their faith and morally objectionable.
The bishop of this diocese cannot, must not, stand idly by and be
silent.
Was he politically correct? Of course not, but then neither was the
Lord Jesus, whom he follows. In his homily, Bishop Jenky was speaking
the truth to his Catholic faithful, proclaiming the power of Jesus'
resurrection, reminding them that true Christianity is never easy,
and
calling upon the men present to stand firm in their Catholic faith.
As
the primary teacher of the faith in this diocese, he can do no less
in
carrying out his duty.

To those critics who suggest an apology for "diminishing the
Holocaust," I can only say that if the Catholic Church had spoken out
as a body more forcefully in objection to Hitler's agenda in 1933,
there may not have been a Holocaust. I am of Jewish descent and I
believe that we cannot speak out strongly enough against the
holocaust
that has murdered 50 million babies in the womb. It is easy to
criticize; it is difficult to listen to the truth that challenges us
to be faithful to Jesus' gospel of life.

Some would say that we shouldn't determine our vote on one issue
alone. I say that there is only one issue: "This day I call heaven
and
earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and
death, blessing and curse. Now choose life, so that you and your
children may live." (Book of Deuteronomy, 30:19)
