Hundreds of Israeli pacifists, both Arabs and Jews, marched
in central Tel Aviv on Saturday to protest against the
blockade imposed by Israel on the Gaza Strip.
The demonstrators -- estimated at more than 1,000 by
organisers of the march -- changed slogans urging "liberty
and justice for Gaza" as they marked the first anniversary
of Israel's war on Gaza.
They called for the lifting of the blockade on the Hamas-
ruled coastal enclave and accused Israel of carrying out
"war crimes" in the territory.
On December 27, 2008 Israel launched a massive offensive
against Gaza in a bid to halt Palestinian rocket and mortar
fire. About 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed
during the 22-day conflict.
On Thursday, hundreds of people including international
activists held a similar protest on both sides of the Erez
crossing between Israel and the Gaza Strip.
Among the protesters were a small group of bearded anti-
Zionist religious Jews clad in traditional ultra-Orthodox
clothing and holding signs that read: "Judaism yes, Zionism
no... State of Israel must go."
Israel has sealed Gaza off to all but limited humanitarian
aid since Hamas -- an armed Islamist group pledged to the
Jewish state's destruction -- seized power there in June
2007 from forces loyal to Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas.

peace rally in Tel Aviv, calling for "liberty and justice
for Gaza" and the lifting of the Israeli-imposed blockade on
the Gaza Strip.
To mark the first anniversary of the first Israeli bombs
that fell on the Gaza Strip on December 27, 2008, the
demonstrators marched in central Tel Aviv on Saturday and
chanted slogans condemning the blockade of Gaza.
The 22-day Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip killed over
1,400 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and injured
over 5,500 people.
In anniversary events that began earlier this week,
demonstrators accused the Israeli government of committing
war crimes in the territory.
One Jewish pacifist participating in the demonstration said,
"We pray for a speedy, total and peaceful dismantlement of
the state of Israel, the villains against the victims of
Gaza and Palestine. Our hearts cry, our hearts embrace the
people of Palestine."
On Thursday, hundreds of people, including international

Israel imposed the blockade on the Gaza Strip after Hamas
came to power in the territory in June 2007.

Hundreds rally against Israeli settlement moratorium
Several hundred civil servants working in Israeli
settlements in the occupied West Bank on Sunday rallied in
Jerusalem against a temporary and limited construction
moratorium.

"We will continue to fulfill our Zionist mission, to build
in the Land of Israel, with or without government help,"
said Danny Dayan, the president of the Yesha Council, the
umbrella settler organisation.
The Israeli government announced in November that it was
imposing a 10-month moratorium on new building starts in the
West Bank in a move aimed at restarting stalled Middle East
peace talks after months of US pressure.
The moratorium, however, excludes occupied and annexed east
Jerusalem, public buildings and works already under way.
The Palestinians have demanded a complete freeze on all
settlement activity, including in east Jerusalem, in order
to restart the peace talks that were suspended to protest
Israel's war on Hamas-run Gaza a year ago.
The international community considers all Israeli
settlements on occupied Palestinian land illegal.

Jewish sects clash, four arrested

ASHDOD, Israel, Jan. 3 (UPI) -- A brawl between rival ultra-
Orthodox Jewish sects in Ashdod, Israel, has resulted in
four arrests, officials said.
Police said a fight broke out Saturday night between 500
rival Ashkenazi and Sephardic sect members in the city's
Zayin quarter, Ynetnews.com reported.
The Web site said the brawl was triggered when Ashkenazim
claimed that Sephardic religious school dropouts were
wandering the streets in violation of the Shabbat, thereby
insulting the haredi, or ultra-Orthodox people, living in
the neighborhood.
Ynetnews.com said four people had been arrested in the fight
and had been brought in for questioning. Neighborhood
residents told the Web site that pamphlets were handed out
in synagogue Saturday calling on Ashkenazi haredim to
protest the situation.
"They planned on making provocations ahead of time, to rile
things up and cause the police to come, so they would
ultimately attack us," Danielle Moyal, a Sephardic resident
of the neighborhood, told Ynetnews.com.
