Saudi airstrikes on northern Yemeni villages on Sunday
killed over a dozen civilians in the beleaguered area,
Houthi fighters said.
Based on a statement released by the fighters, Yemeni women
and children were among the dead. They said Saudi forces
also killed several other civilians who had fled to the
Fotrah area.
Fierce fighting reportedly are underway in the border
regions.
The fighters also claim that they have repelled Saudi and
Yemeni incursions by launching major attacks on Sa'ada, al-
Malahit and Saudi border areas.
Saudi Arabia joined the Yemeni government's campaign against
the Houthi fighters on November 3. The fighters accuse
Riyadh of targeting civilian areas far from the Saudi-Yemeni
border.
The attacks have so far killed scores of civilians and
displaced thousands of others in northern Yemen.
The Yemeni government claims the fighters are seeking to
revive an imamate that was toppled in 1962. The fighters,
however, say they demand an end to government's social,
economic and political "discrimination" against Shias as
well as Saudi-backed attempts to spread Wahabism - a sect
that preaches controversial and violent actions - in the
northern areas.

The United States, with the full support of the Yemeni
government, led the recent ground and air strikes on
suspected Al-Qaeda positions killing more than 60 militants,
a television report says.
According to CBS television report broadcast on Saturday,
the recent attacks on Al-Qaeda positions in Yemen, including
cruise missile strikes, were led by the United States.
CBS quoted Sebastian Gorka, a US special operations expert
who trains Yemeni officers, as saying that the assaults
"were very much executed by the United States, but with
heavy support by the Yemeni government."
"It was cruise missile strikes in combination with military
units on the ground," Gorka added.
The attacks took place after US President Barack Obama
earlier vowed to attack Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula,
who were said to be behind the arming and training of a
young Nigerian man who tried to blow up a US airliner on
Christmas Day.
Attacks on suspected Al-Qaeda targets were launched on
December 17 and 24, killing more than 60 Islamist militants,
and wounding several others.

Recent attacks on Al-Qaeda positions in Yemen, including
cruise missile strikes, were led by the United States
according to a CBS television report Saturday.
The channel quoted Sebastian Gorka, a "US special operations
expert who trains Yemeni officers," as saying the United
States had led the recent ground and air assaults.
"That was very much something executed by the United States,
but with heavy support by the Yemeni government," Gorka
said.
"It was cruise missile strikes in combination with military
units on the ground."
The report comes after President Barack Obama earlier blamed
Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula for arming and training a
young Nigerian man who tried to blow up a US airliner on
Christmas Day.
The US leader also vowed to hit back at those behind the
attack, as his administration faces criticism for failing to
prevent the December 25 attack.
"Training camps have been struck; leaders eliminated; plots
disrupted," he said in a weekly radio address. "And all
those involved in the attempted act of terrorism on
Christmas must know: you too will be held to account."
Yemeni forces launched raids on suspected Al-Qaeda targets
on December 17 and 24, killing more than 60 Islamist
militants.
Several others were also wounded in clashes this week in a
western province of the impoverished Arabian peninsula state
which lies north of Somalia across the Gulf of Aden.
On Saturday security sources said Yemeni army reinforcements
had been sent to the eastern provinces of Abyan, Bayada and
Shawba, where Al-Qaeda militants have hideouts.
"These measures are part of operations to hunt down elements
of Al-Qaeda, prevent any attempt of a response after the
raids, and tighten the noose around extremists," one of the
sources said.
