The following ftp has some contemporary depiction's of some of the
scenes from our lore. It has Thiassi's abduction of Idun, Thor in his
contest with krungnir and the clay giant, and a depiction of the
Valkyrie.

I have found that the various books on Norse or Viking culture are the
best sources for period art work.

I have stacks and stacks of books full of pictures. As long as it isnt for
profit, its not *really* wrong to scan them up and use them on the web,
right?

;), I guess it's a matter of personal belief on that one.

It depends on the publication. Look on the back-side of the title page.
If you see something like

"No part of this publication may be reproduced in any form or for any
purpose without writen consent etc etc..."

then you would be taking a risk by publishing them on the net. How big
of a risk? Most people do not pay any attention to these type of
proscriptions - as in photo-copying a partucular chapter of a text for a
meeting or a class. Likewise publishers generally don't follow-up by
attempting to chase around those who might be photo-copying. Of course
the internet is a bit different consideration, but chances are that _if_
(big if) they stumbled across your web-site - and if they decided they
didn't like the free publicity, all they would do is send a nasty e-mail
threatening to sue if you did not remove them. I can't see a publisher
going overboard about a "web-head" who posted a few pictures :) -
especially if you take care to insure that the publisher and artist are
given credit. [Take a look at the binary and multi-media newsgroups for
instance]

It would not be a *crime* (e.g. police kicking down your door) unless
you were somehow turning a profit with your web-page, and the art work
could be directly linked to the ability to turn that profit. Then it
could be fraud (among other things).

I realize the *wrong* you refer to probably has nothing to do with the
legal issues I earlier posted - but I have no advice on that one other
than it depends on alot of considerations most of which are personal.
Right and wrong are rarely as simple as black and white.

If there was a picture I really liked - and if I ever had the time and
motivation to put together a web-site, I would consider publishing it -
with the publisher/artist credits and purchase information. Still, it
would be a civally 'liable' situation...
