Mary proclaimed herself "the Mother of the true God who gives life"
and left her image permanently upon the tilma of St. Juan Diego, a man
newly converted to Christianity. Her likeness was given as a sign to
Bishop Zumarraga, who abided by her wishes and constructed a church on
Mt. Tepeyacac, the site of the apparitions. Millions of natives were
converted to Christianity during the period following her visit. Our
Lady of Guadalupe has been designated as the Patron Saint of the
Americas.
