If the atheists are correct, and there is no God, then why are most atheists
(from my experience) so miserable, and those people with a deep faith in God
so happy?

Well, just off the top of my head. . .

- Do you have anything to lend support to your claim that atheists are
less happy than Christians other than your assertion? Recent divorce
statistics shows that most Christian sects have less happy marriages
than atheists.

- How can you consider happiness to be evidence for your god when people
who worship other gods can also be quite happy?

- People who have addictions (smoking, alcohol) feel better when they
are feeding their addiction. Is this happiness a testimony to the worth
of addiction?

- Where exactly did your god say that your personal happiness is a
measure of his worth? Looking at the lives of Jesus, the disciples, and
other first-century Christians, I'd say that having "deep faith in God"
was a one-way ticket to misery.

Why are so many atheists reading this newsgroup, they must be looking for
something. If I didn't believe in God, I certainly wouldn't be looking at a
religious newsgroup.

You're an idiot, thats why.

People that I know whom are atheists are happy, whilst poeple such as
yourself show huge quantities of self-doubt and depression 'round every
corner. But I'm less apt to make such a hasty conclusion. Or am I???

First of all, I suspect your "experience" is primarily a matter of
seeing what you want to see.

But the main point is, so what? Being "happy" will not make gods exist.
Children are quite happy believing in Santa Claus. This does not have
anything to do with Santa Claus existing. What does being "happy" or
"unhappy" have to do with the existence of deities?

I, for one am very happy, and I am an Atheist.

Let's look at you and your religion there "Love." The Bible tells you many
ways in which you are to worship the Lord. One of those ways is to avoid
temptation and recognize evil when it is present. This means that to follow
your religion, you must look for evil to avoid it. Stop me if I'm wrong.

The way I live my life is to look for beauty in everything I see. When I
meet people I look for the things about them that I find most beautiful, not
the ugly or evil in them. I believe that we are the product of our
environment and we absorb what we see. By looking for and finding the
beautiful in others, those are the traits that you will find and make your
own.

How many people do you know that pass their hours sniping at anyone and
everyone? "She is such a bitch." "If my kid was that stupid..." "Those
people have no class at all." You probably know a lot of people like that,
right? The one thing that I hope will be said about me when I'm gone is
that I never had a bad thing to say about anyone. As I said, if you look
you will find the beautiful in everyone.

If this all sounds hippy-dippy "peace, love, dope," well, maybe it is. The
biggest difference with me, though, is that there are no mystical forces or
supernatural powers driving my world. Between the sunrise walks on the
beach, evenings filled with laughter and friendship, travels around the
world or just a quiet moment to myself, why would I need a bug-a-boo, ghost
or supreme being to show me happiness?

Sorry, but you were way off the mark this time.

We're not reading your newsgroup. We're reading alt.atheism. Typically,
a christian has spammed us and cross posted to christian news groups.
Apparently grandstanding for god.

I'm reading your post in alt.atheism so *you must be "looking for

I agree with most, but not all of what you said, Uncle Rocco. And I think
that you're much closer to the message of Christ than you know. I don't
think you necessarily need a belief in God to get to heaven. I think we'll be
judged on how we treat our fellow human beings, not what we believed or
disbelieved in this life. It sounds to me that you're far along that path in
that department, and that I could certianly learn from you.

You are obviously a person who wants to make the world a better place. And
while we disagree over the existence of God, our goals are the same.

That being said, I hope God gives you a big "surprise" party when you meet
Him in the next life. Maybe you and I will meet there as well. You seem like
the kind of person I'd want to hang around with.

Peace to you,
Brian

The atheists are correct, there is no god, and athiests are by and large
just as happy and well adjusted, if not moreso, than Christians who live
with their heads in the sand. Why? Perhaps because we don't live our
entire lives in anticipation of some wonderful afterlife that will never
come to pass. We live our lives with the knowledge that when it's over,
it's OVER. That;s why we try to take as much happiness as we can in the
here and now, instead of depriving ourselves and making ourselves miserable.

I suspect he needs to believe that those that don't follow his fantasy
are miserable, after all, how else is he going to feel superior?

I've met some pretty miserable Xers in meatspace and cyberspace. They
come in two types the openly miserable one and the smarmy type that
just insist that they're /so/ happy. That's not a picture of all Xians

If belief in god was the same kind of thing as belief that George Washington
was the first president then we would all be believers in God.

But the fact is that while scarcely anyone doubts that George Washington was
the first president, lots of people doubt the existence of god.

Yet the original poster is correct in that you believe that Washington
existed, even though you never saw him with your own eyes. Indeed, no one
living today saw him with their own eyes, so you cannot even get first-hand

However, we have more than one source of information about George

from one source: the Bible. If I wrote a book about an alleged sighting
of a UFO, most people wouldn't believe me. However, if 30 people all
wrote books relating the same sighting at the same time in the same

the same amount of evidence for God as they do for everything else in

More hateful vitriol from Michael Nash the Miserable Atheist.

By the way, if I saw photos of the big bang, it would only serve to increase
my wonder of creation, and to confirm my belief in the existence of the
Creator. As an astronomer, I have always viewed the universe as proof of the

That's a silly statement. By your logic, someone who doesn't understand
nutrition shouldn't "waste their time" eating.

Like anything else, the more we know about our loving God Who created us, the
closer we can get to Him, and the more we can be warmed by the fire of His
love. That is the only path to true happiness.

Michael, you need not suffer in your misery in this life (although I pray for
you that you will be relieved of it in the next). If you turn to God, you
will find the peace that you know in your heart you so sorely lack.

As St. Augustine said, "Our hearts were made for you, oh Lord, and they shall
not rest until they rest in you."

Now Michael Nash the Miserable Atheist is resorting to insulting someone's
mother.

It's a good thing for you that you use insults in all these discussions. If
you didn't, you may have to back up your hopeless position with some reason.

Michael, I'm willing to bet that you try to live your life in a decent
manner. Am I correct? I would hope that you try to help your fellow human

Well if the argument you stated above is correct -- "when it's over it's

don't you just step on people, stab them in the back, and do everything you

may affect others?

After all, by your logic, it wouldn't matter. For when it's over, it's over.

As far as friends and relatives go, I have many who are atheists. At
least two friends I have are on anti-depressant medication. One has a
history of suicide attempts. However, I don't think atheism by itself
causes unhappiness; nor does it cause happiness. The same applies to
religion. I have some Christian friends that are the happiest people I

Abner, you make an assumption that I "preach" to atheists. Nothing could be
further from the truth. Posting my opinions on a public newsgroup (just as
atheists do), is a far cry from preaching. After all, the whole purpose of
newsgroups is to discuss issues.

I could just as easily describe any of your posts as "preaching" in the name
of atheism. But if I did so, I'd be wrong.

More hateful, name-calling and nastiness from a miserable atheist who can't
engage in an intellectual discussion without resorting to foul language and

Boy, you atheists are just full of vitriol and hate. I hope you overcome it

You can all run from the truth, but you cannot hide.

Oh, please! The bible makes it very clear what happens to those
that do *not* worship (believe in) him.

Before you say that i am misreading the bible, or misrepresenting
or "not reading in context" or whatever, i ask you to present a
version of bible and the appropriate interpretation of it that is
universally accepted by xians.

I do note, however, that you sidestepped the actual issue, as is
the wont of the average christerbot bent on depressing the
oppressed.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary proof.

With all due disrespect, the two words "bible" and "fact" do not
belong in the same book, let alone the same sentence. Continuing
the same disrespect here, i bet my bottom dollar that we have more
knowledgeable bible scholars here in alt.atheism than you, and that
we atheists are in general more knowledgeable than the average
xian. Easily.

And again, there are more versions of xianity than there are stars
visible in the northern hemisphere. If my memory serves me correct,
the number is somewhere around 20000. When you give me a
satisfactory answer as to why it is possible that all those
denominations are doctrinally different, yet based on the same
book, *then* you can ask yourself whether or not *your* opinion is
informed, and whether or not *your* information is correct.

Have a researchful day.

I wasn't aware that you were attempting to engage in an intellectual
discussion; so far all you've done is make arrogant assertions. That
people have called you on it is hardly surprising. You may think in
some way that you're attempting to "help" people, but you're coming
off as a huge jerk in the process. Perhaps you might ask yourself why
virtually *everyone* is insulting you here. It isn't because we're all
miserable, it's because you're being obnoxious.

You're being called names because you're an arrogant jackass. Theists
who treat us with respect (Jayne) are given the respect they deserve.
Theists who come here to alt.atheism to preach and make insulting
assertions are also treated with the respect they deserve: in this
case, none.

What was that point again? That we get annoyed at idiots who have the
arrogance to tell us how we feel? Quite true; it's amazing that you

Mine too.

In fact, here is is again. .

OK OK. I think we all see where you're going with this.

You post a buncha flamebait about how we're miserable, wait for people

proof that they're miserable.

Somehow I doubt the sincerity of your interest in what atheists think or
feel. Did you really come here seeking to save atheist souls? Or did you
come here to bump against evidence that contradicts your picture of
reality--that sane, intelligent, well-educated, rational people can be
both atheist and reasonably happy--in the hope that by bumping against
it, it will go away? I would bet that you're more troubled by the
possible existence of intelligent and reasonably content atheists (as
well you should be) than they are by the probable nonexistence of God.

If you examined your need to send this post to this newsgroup (i.e.,
alt.atheism), I would be interested in an honest accounting of it.

So which *minority* of christian denominations are 'wrong'?

Here's a few possible answers.

You know the wrong atheists, I'm happy from time to time, and all
people I know in real life don't consider me to be miserable. I don't
think I'm the prototypical happy & cheerful atheist, though. Perhaps
Tukla is, he's so happy he even likes ABBA songs.

The face of reality is not necessarily a beautiful one, when
confronted with it a person may become miserable.

It may be true that to some extent some religions can cheer you up
when you're down, but the question is if making people happy can
justify "deep faith in God". Not all religions do this trick, you
shouldn't seek comfort in calvinism or gnosticism when you're
depressed, for example.

I freely admit to reposting this material I wrote in another thread, but
it is absolutely applicable to the above question.

Assuming that's more than a rhetoric question, I can honestly assert
that I live one of the happiest lives imaginable. In no particular
order, I can point to deep satisfaction in the following areas of my
life: 1) wonderful wife, 2) delightful children, 3) challenging and
rewarding career, 4) outstanding extended family, 5) terrific house in a
terrific neighborhood, 6) good health, 7) new car paid off, 8) enjoyable
hobbies and interests, 9) involvement in advising a local college social
fraternity, 10) no religious constraints, 11) a fully-funded college
education for both of my kids, 12) an early and very comfortable
retirement a decade from now. That's just a dozen reasons off the top of
my head; if I needed to, I could keep going for quite some time.

On the other hand, I'm quite sure that there are Christians who are
profoundly unhappy, as one of my best friends from high school, Heather,
a sincere born-again Christian with unshakable faith in Jesus, is
struggling with many different tragedies and burdens that she really
doesn't deserve. Raped, assaulted, married to (and fled from) an abusive
husband, on public assistance, caring for four kids battered by her
husband, no means of transportation, and no home of their own. She's
attempted suicide on two occasions. I've helped out as much as she will
allow, and then even more, but it becomes apparent to all except her
that her God has abandoned her. The point is not that I've done more for
her and her family than her God has done, but that for some reason her
God (assuming He exists) is putting her through some sort of useless,
pointless "test" while I am enjoying life to the fullest without having
any belief or faith in her God.
