ARAA Disclaimer
WARNING:
If you have come to this newsgroup, alt.recovery.aa (also known as
ARAA), for the first time, BEWARE.......
Alcoholic discussions no longer exist on ARAA. Dont waste your time
hoping to discuss alcoholism, because it wont happen. You'll be able to
read lots of political topics, get many useless links to youtube videos,
read lots of meaningless trash, engage in a war over which linux distro
is better, and you might even get the latest Wall Street Reports, but
you wont get nothing that pertains to the intended topic. But dont quit
reading quite yet, there are some useful links below that may help you.
If you're new to ARAA, and needing help with your drinking, LEAVE AS
SOON AS YOU FINISH READING THIS MESSAGE.
If you're new to ARAA, and wanting to discuss AA (pro-AA or anti-AA),
or just want to discuss alcoholism issues. LEAVE ARAA NOW.
ARAA is almost exclusively dominated by trolls, flamers, cyber stalkers,
idiots, and assholes. If you're looking for a serious discussion about
alcoholism and/or AA, LEAVE NOW.
*** There are alternatives listed below in this disclaimer message.
This newsgroup was originally intended to be a place to discuss topics,
opinions, views and anything else related to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).
This includes, but is not limited to anything related to drinking
alcohol, alcoholism, therapy, religious opinions related to the 12
Steps, legal issues related to drinking, and anything else related to
alcohol and the program of AA. This includes both pro-AA and anti-AA
views, opinions and topics. Discussion of alternative organizations to
AA are also valid.
BEWARE.......
ALCOHOLISM AND DRUG ADDICTIONS CAN KILL - DONT TRUST YOUR LIFE TO ARAA.
There is little sobriety on ARAA. Even less membership in AA. This
newsgroup has little to do with actual AA topics. Any newcomer to ARAA
will be verbally abused by the large number of trolls, flamers, rude
assholes, religious fanatics, cultists, and idiots who post to the
group. Most of them are newsgroup abusers who do not care whatsoever
about the intended topic of the group. They use this group to discuss
politics, linux, post weblinks which have nothing to do with the groups
topic, and generally abuse the group for personal use. While there is
an actual FAQ (list of rules) for this newsgroup, the majority of the
regular users repeatedly violate these rules on a daily basis. Abusing
the newsgroup is shameful and a waste of this resource for alcoholics.
However the problems on this group are deeper and more damaging.
There are a few persons on ARAA who delight in harassing persons who
come to the group while still drinking, and even those who are not
drinking but want to discuss both the pros and cons of AA. Some of them
are downright rude, hateful, and want to deny others the right to use
the group, and even deny Americans their right to freedom of speech.
There have even been cyber stalkers on the group who will follow you
around the internet to annoy you. If you do run into conflict with one
of these persons, ignore them, and if they violate the law, such as
denial of free speech, or stalk you, report them to their Internet
Service Provider, their newsgroup service providers, and even to your
local police. If you are not sure how to do this, there is help
available on the Google Groups home page. You can also use google to
search for words such as "online harassment", online bullying", "cyber
stalking", and more. If you do intend to file a complaint, DO NOT
delete the message. Save it for evidense in your newsreader program, or
copy and paste the message text (With headers), to Notepad or any text
editor program. Another method is to print the offensive message to
give to the authorities.
Bear in mind, that at least a few of these persons on ARAA are drunk,
using drugs, or mentally disturbed. They get some sort of sick arousal
from harassing persons who are trying to get or stay sober, or who have
opinions which they do not share. The internet has it's share of these
disturbed persons, and there is little you can do, other than just
ignore them. But as I stated above, it they threaten you, stalk you, or
violate the law in other ways, you can and should contact the
authorities. Every U.S. State has laws against this type of behavior,
and do enforce them. I'm sure some other countries also have laws to
deal with internet harassment.
Please take note, this newsgroup alt.recovery.aa (ARAA) is *NOT*
connected to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) in any way. In the past, the
"Alcoholics Anonymous World Services" (AAWS) website (
www.aa.org), used
to list ARAA as a resource. However. in recent years, AAWS has removed
this newsgroup as a resource from their website links page, (for good
reason).
There are several on here who claim they are active sober members of AA.
Don't let them fool you. they might have gone to a few AA meetings years
ago, or none at all. They are NOT members of AA, or other alcohol
recovery programs. Some of them claim they are sober, and appear to be
sober, a few are obviously drinking, and this does not include those who
openly say they are drinking. Actually, sobriety is not a requirement
of the newsgroup ARAA, since this is not AA. However, staying on topic
*IS* a requirement and those who violate this rule are in violation of
general internet newsgroup policies and netiquette (internet etiquette).
See:
http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc1855.txt
It need be noted that ARAA does contain a few regular posters who are
severely mentally and emotionally ill. They are incapable of discussing
anything and in one case, the person is not even capable of posting
messages that make any sense. There are also the flamers and trolls who
will oppose anything you say, regardless of the topic. These persons
are downright rude and inconsiderate individuals. If you decide to use
this newsgroup, it's highly recommended that you use the "filters" built
into most newsreader software, and simply filter these people out. Why
waste your time reading rude comments or messages that have nothing to
say other than random words.
ARAA is a very poor representation of Alcoholics Anonymous and what it
stands for. It should also be noted that there are several regular
posters to the newsgroup who are using numerous nyms (online names), and
pretending to be other persons, while in fact they are one and the same
person. Some even portray both sobriety and drunkeness, and are the
very same person.
If you have a negative image of Alcoholics Anonymous, and your viewpoint
is anti-AA, be forwarned, you will be the victim of verbal abuse on
ARAA. These people, while most are not actual members of AA, want you
to believe they are active members of AA and believe they are above
others. After all, they are a gift from God, and *how dare you* speak
against their beloved program.
If you want the *REAL* Alcoholics Anonymous, go to a local meeting, or
visit
www.aa.org to find one. There are also other resources for
alcoholics available online. Do a google search for "alcoholism" or use
any other search engine. If AA is not your cup of tea, but you want
help with your drinking, there are other programs which may help you.
(some Links below). Another option is to go to a local hospital and ask
for help with your drinking. Most hospitals have support groups, can
provide you with a therapist or counselor, or offer other help and
support. Dont forget to look for bulletin boards within the hospital,
some will list outside support groups for alcoholism and drug abuse, in
your community. And dont forget to look in your phone book. Look under
CRISIS INTERVENTION or HOTLINES in the yellow-pages.
If you can not stomach ARAA, or find it's content useless, (which it
unually is) there are alternatives.
Other newgroups which have potential are:
alt.recovery
alt.recovery.addiction.alcoholism
Or for those with an anti-AA view:
alt.recovery.from-12-steps
There are other online discussion groups.
Yahoo Groups
Google Groups
and others..... Search for "online alcoholism groups", or simply the
word "alcoholism".
Some alternatives to AA are as follows:
S.M.A.R.T Recovery
www.smartrecovery.org
Rational Recovery
www.rational.org
Moderation Management
www.moderation.org
Secular Organization for Sobriety (SOS)
http://www.sossobriety.org
Stop Drinking Alcohol .com
http://www.stopdrinkingalcohol.com
(Not an actual program, but ways to stop on your own)
Another option is to call or visit your local mental health center,
normally located in most hospitals. Speaking to a therapist or
counselor never hurts anyone, and these facilities often have specialty
counselors who help with addictions, and/or have a list of referral
local self-help groups and places to get further assistance.
If they suggest AA, and AA is not what you want, tell them so, and ask
what other alternatives they have.

AA
If you've never been to AA, but want to learn what their program is
about, you can read their "Big Book" entitled "Alcoholics Anonymous", by
going to your local library, or it can be read online here:
http://www.aa.org/bigbookonline
This book is the "Bible" for AA, and is what the program is about (or is
supposed to be). You judge for yourself what you wish about their
program.
If you want to get a feel of what you'll actually hear at AA meetings,
besides hearing portions of the "Big Book" read out-loud, go to this
webpage:
http://www.drunkalog.com
You'll hear lots of stories like these, as well as all the disputes, and
dictorial statements from long time members who can be helpful at times,
but are often control freaks who think they know it all.
-----
Soon to come, a list of all the user names of the newsgroup trolls,
usenet abusers, online stalkers, cyber bullies, control freaks, flamers,
mentally retarded idiots, and other assholes, who abuse ARAA, with a
brief description of their abuses. Several ARAA regulars should be in a
mental asylum, or should have been aborted before their birth.
While most of those who frequent ARAA and abuse the group, are simply
violators of the newsgroup itself, there exists a few very disturbed
individuals who not only violate cyber laws, but are dangerous
individuals over all. There is at least one individual who also
violators both the federal (FCC) and state laws, and who poses a threat
to others, both online, and in real life. This person has been reported
to the proper authorities. Use extreme caution, and never disclose your
true identity on ARAA.
-----
This message will be posted regularly to ARAA, and to other "recovery"
usenet groups. This will serve as a warning to everyone new to these
newsgroups and/or alcohol recovery. If you need help with alcohol
addiction, you will NOT get it on the newsgroup alt.recovery.aa
