the 12 steppers aren't raking in billions of dollars. They may be misguided,
but they're not the big money operation that scientology is.

Most certainly, those who go to the church-basement meetings are not
raking in the billions and it would be preposterous to suggest that is
the case. You are correct that the average member is simply misguided.
However, the U.S. treatment industry which is about 95% 12-Step (the
remainder being mostly Scientology and Fundamentalist Christian) does
indeed rake in billions, probably enough billions that Scientology can
only dream about having them..
Not only that, but the 12-Step treatment industry gets much of their
money from various levels of the government. The government doesn't yet
fund, at least that I know of, Scientology "treatment."
