My mom this morning was doing some yard work. I guess she was running the
lawnmower over the grass in the back to pick up the leaves. My parents'
house has TONS of HUGE trees in the yard and it's a huge yard, front and
back...
I guess while she was doing that, she ran over a rock and it flew out of the
mower and hit her right in the mouth.
My one brother was home and I guess he ended up taking her to the emergency
clinic and my brother said that 3 of her teeth are "smashed out" (his words)
and her mouth got it pretty good, without all the gross details that make my
stomach churn and feel sick.
It's not life threatening or anything, but boy does it make me feel sick
just thinking about that, nevermind it actually happening.
So... if you're doing yard work this weekend or some time, just be careful.
I've run over many rocks with the mower - or even hard little pine cones -
and I've had them fly out and hit me in the shin or something and boy does
THAT hurt... I even remember years and years ago cutting the grass, running
over a rock and the rock went flying out and hit my mom's car... making a
nice big dent in the door.
Just be careful. Like really... In all of my years, I've had my share of
rocks in the shins or legs, or shooting out at the car, side of the house or
just flying out the side, but never have come across something like this.
My parents' next door neighbour's son tripped and ran over his foot - taking
off 1 or 2 of his toes on one foot, but this mouth incident ranks right up
there for me.
Yikes. Just be careful, even though this is probably just a freak
accident... Of all the places to fly out and to fly so high, yuck. Just
clean the yard with caution!
Yikes, I can almost feel your mom's pain. Hope she heals quickly. I always
walk the yard and pick up anything I see before I start mowing. When there
are leaves covering everything, however, that becomes almost impossible.
Unfortunately the younger ones don't and get annoyed when I press the issue.
They like to mow in flip flops too which I also over rule. It makes me
cringe when I see people out mowing the lawn with kids playing alongside.
To me it is just an accident waiting to happen. I would always stop dead in
my tracks when a child came into the yard and if they stayed longer than the
few secs required to give me whatever message they had, I shut the mower
down. Would rather be over the top than see an injured child, or anyone for
that matter.

Oh she looks horrible too! I haven't seen her yet, but she took a picture
and sent that to me. She's on a bunch of painkillers - she was given 4
different kinds but trying to keep to just the one. I'm normally the one
that cuts the grass and does a fair amount of yardwork for my parents. They
are still able to but I usually do the stuff probably easier for me and I
enjoy doing. Normally the grass is checked to make sure there's no
surprises in the lawn, but really, the back grass is very thick and grows
like a weed so it's thick AND long, plus there's many, MANY large, old trees
with tons of leaves in the back. It does make it difficult anyway.

I always check, and I'm like you - I will stop the mower if someone comes
around or when someone is walking on the sidewalk. I stop the mower
completely and shut it off. I even stop walking if a car comes by on the
road, although I don't bother shutting it off for that. My mom once said
the kids were fine in the back yard on the other side of the yard (they
seriously have a huge back yard) while I'm cutting on the other side. No.
For some reason, I never liked that idea. I think it was from when that
rock shot out and smashed into the side of my mom's car years and years ago,
making a nice big dent in the side door LOL
I have mowed in flip flops before. I always thought if I'm going to cut off
my feet, shoes aren't going to make a difference. I'll lose a foot
regardless of what's on or off my feet. Then I realized flip flops are
horrible... Not only do your feet turn green, but they aren't the best for
walking around, turning, gripping the ground. Also, nevermind stepping on
something like an ant hill in the grass, stepping on a stick or something
missed by eyes and the mower. I now will put on a proper pair of runners
for cutting the grass!

Thanks, and I do realize this is kind of a freak accident. But, then again,
it could have been worse, I'm sure. It could have flown out and hit her in
the neck and killed her or something... Or came out and nailed her in the
eye. Or it could have come out and just shot across the way in a random
direction and hit the car or fence or a tree or something LOL
LOL thanks, but I guess yesterday morning, my mom got up and looked in the
mirror and was a little shocked. She said to my dad (joking) "Don't look at
me! I'm hideous!!!" that's her new favorite word... Hideous haha
I guess they yanked out 4 of her top front teeth as one was completely
smashed out, the other 3 were very smashed. And a 5th tooth is real loose,
but I guess they somehow glued (or something like that) the loose tooth to
the next one beside it. They also yanked out bone fragments out of her
mouth. I guess her gums just smashed as well and that's where the bone came
from. Yuck. Stitches in her bottom and top lip and she looks like a mess.
She can't go to work looking like this and on all the painkillers - I told
her she can't go to work because no one would take her serious looking like
that! haha
Wear something thick leather, my kid cut his foot
mowing in runners, 7 stitches.

You can't have everything. . . where would you put
it?
Poor woman! With all the damage she probably won't have it fixed up in time
for Christmas eats and pics. She probably won't feel like going out
shopping either. Will that mean that you will be given extra to do? I know
you won't mind, we only get one set of parents and when they are gone they
are gone, but you do have an awful lot on your plate!

Poor guy! My parents' neighbour's adult son cut his toe(s) right off with
the lawnmower.
The mower seems like one of those things that ARE very dangerous... You can
wear shoes made of steel but you'll end up getting a rock in the shin...
You'll wear something to protect your legs and you'll get something in the
face. I do definitely think I am going to seriously think twice about
sending DS out to cut the grass. He hasn't yet cut the grass, and he's
almost 9, yet I was definitely cutting the lawn when I was his age, and I
was loving it! I really don't think I'll be alright with DS (or DDs)
cutting the grass any time soon, regardless.
Well, she had the stitches already done after it happened, and they did yank
out all the upper 4 teeth, so she's missing all her front teeth now. She, I
believe, has already made the appointment and had said something about a
temporary fix with some sort of plate and teeth. Then there will be
something permanant put in, but she is, apparently, having something to fix
her teeth for the time being. She really can't work with all her teeth
missing, though, and I also think she doesn't *want* to. She's the manager
for the whole south side of the city here for child welfare, so she does
deal with people every day, although it is mostly the people in her offices
that she deals with face to face. I do think a toothless mouth might be a
little difficult to take seriously, though lol
My mom hates shopping, but, with Christmas and the food, PLUS her birthday
is the day after Christmas, I think she'll make sure she has some kind of
chompers in time. I get the impression that as soon as she's willing and
able to go, they'll be fixing something with her mouth. She's just on a
bunch of painkillers and can't even drive right now anyway lol She's doped
up enough the last couple days that my dad has been going himself to
dialysis even haha She normally goes to keep him company.
She is, though, a little put off about missing her dinner hahaha It was my
parents' 30th wedding anniversary yesterday and they were supposed to go out
for their fancy steak dinners. That obviously didn't happen lol
I am, thankfully, excluded right now from helping around Christmas as far as
dinner and stuff goes. I'm just not worth the headache as most often 1 up
to 4 kids tag along with me since I usually don't have much choice, and 4
little ones under foot is just not worth it. I best help by keeping the
kids away from the work LOL My mom did, though, say that now although her
teeth were never bad, with fake replacements, they'll now be pretty much
perfect teeth hahaha
