It's scary to part with things sometimes. I wish I could do more of
this. I feel so "stuck" sometimes.

Maybe if I did a list of all the things I "can't" part with I'd have a
clue as to "what" I'm actually hanging on to. I'm sure it isn't the
"stuff".

I wonder how many of us have similar "lists" in the
backs of our minds. Things that are keeping us planted in
junk/clutter that truely don't have "practical" value but are
emotional strangleholds on our progress.

I'll start:

* All my art stuff: I love art, but I'm too scared to draw for fear
of it being icky or wasting money on paper and supplies when it's not
good. (I have tons of this stuff)
* My junk mail:??? Only God knows at this point what the heck I'm
keeping it for! It's so DUM & useless!
* Books. I don't read that much, I just horde books.
* Clothes. 3 sizes. Oh...it's because I'm the yoyo queen of dieting!
* Spices. Every spice on the freakin' planet! Witch in a past life?
* Paper,paper,paper! Paper everywhere! Anykind!
* Ribbons! Everykind of pretty ribbon!
* Toiletries: Things so old and nasty I'd NEVER use 'em! YUCK!
WHY????

I'm making myself sick! I've got tooooo much paper stuff! What's up
with *THAT*????!!!!???? But ya know what? I'm not running for the
garbage sack! What's up with *THAT*, I'd like ta know!

Don't bum yourself out lily, you're not alone. Most of my stuff falls
into the 'what if' category.

1. Paper of all sorts colours and weights. what if I need to do
something special like a flyer or card or...

2. Crafty stuff. mostly cross stitch with every pattern known to man.
I have used before but not for years now. what if i want to again.

3. shoes. this is a strange one for me because generally i wear the
same pair of shoes every day. simple black suede flats. but I have two
big rubbermaid storage bins full of shoes from years and years back. I
never wear them. but what if I might?

4. clothes. getting better at this one but still not there. a lot that
is too small but so very nice. can't get rid of...what if I somehow
lose weight.

those are the biggies for me. I want to get rid of it, but can't bear
to part with it. So you're definitely not alone. I have found that
doing things one bit at a time helps. Instead of saying to myself that
today is the day I gut my closet, I'll just pull out one thing and
consider it on its own. if that one thing is serving me no purpose then
I decide to toss or give away. then I walk away from it and leave it
till next time. It seems to be less painful somehow to know that it's
just one thing that's going. YMMV of course but those 'one things' add
up as we all know.

Perhaps I can help on a couple of things:

Junk mail--you may be afraid you're going to accidently throw out something
important. Perhaps if you picked one kind of junk mail that you absolutely
know you don't need to keep--go through the piles--and only toss those
kinds. For me it would be: offers for new credit cards--automatically get
shredded seconds after they come in the house; address labels and other
stuff from charities--we don't need it and I resent them trying to guilt me
into a donation by sending me a "gift"--it gets tossed; anything that the
offer has expired on--such as free shipping or a coupon. The oldest edition
of a gift catalog--they won't fill an order from it anyway--Mom's tried.
Just tossing out one kind of junk mail might get you started.

Books--just about any book you get rid of can be almost instantly replaced
for a pittance by purchasing it on half.com. Also, by listing your books for
sale on half.com you get to keep them until someone buys them. Another
effect of this is: once you start looking at all of the books no one wants
to buy--you start wondering why in the heck you are hanging on to
them--unless they have some real personal value to you--then they shouldn't
have been put up for sale anyway.

Clothes that don't fit--by the time you get to a point where they
fit--they'll be hopelessly out of style--people would pity you if they saw
you on the street in them--get rid of them now so that someone can use
them--or you could just trash them to save someone else from being pitied.

Spices--don't worry about it--they're small and attractive if displayed
right. :) --maybe that wasn't much help. :)

Old toiletries--a lot of that stuff spoils--goes off--grows bacteria, mold,
etc--it's unsafe and useless after a few decades--get rid of it before
someone gets sick. It's a health thing--sort of like hanging on to a used
piece of toilet paper.

Good luck, Lily. I have a few scary things of my own-might even list them
later. I've noticed that when I list things--or even casually mention
them--it somehow sets me up to act. examples: the greenhouse and the diaries

Let us know what you tossed and we'll go nuts cheering for you.

Maybe you need to move - it has a way of forcing you to part with
junk.
Downsizing your abode in the process could also help.

I am bad about hanging onto glassware I will prob. never use. I got
rid of some on the last move, but still moved other stuff - like that
sentimental glass from 1963.

Regarding your art stuff...how would you be wasting money? You already have
what you need and it is now going unused. Some would say that the fact that
it is sitting there is the waste. Even if you do something you are not
pleased with you would still come out even in a way. (I just thought I would
give you a different perspective.)

Or...ask yourself...If I were moving...would I keep this or toss it??? If
the answer is "toss it"...why wait till you move? Toss it now!!!

A big one for me this last week was "Do I clean it or pitch it?"
I had some construction done and everything is liberally coated
in plaster dust. A LOT of grapevine wreaths, baskets, and silk
floral arrangements hit the trash.

Funny, since I was out on a basket hunt this week. My new place has space
above the cupboards. Being earthquake country and all, I figured baskets
would be the best idea. I had a few, but not enough to fill up the cupboard
area. I bought them all on sale, and nothing more than 4 dollars. They are
all different and interesting. Interestingly, only one basket is valuable
(handmade sweetgrass from North Carolina). If I take all of the other 7
together, I would have to triple their cost to equal that one basket. I
will be the only one, who is aware of the discrepency, I think.

Meanwhile, had I been on Deena's street I think I could have gotten a really
good deal on baskets.
