ROME (CNS) -- Opulence and waste are unacceptable especially when hunger --
the cruelest form of poverty -- continues to rise, Pope Benedict XVI told
world leaders at a summit on food security.

The pope condemned the greed that fuels speculation on food prices, aid that
debilitates agricultural production, and excessive exploitation of the
earth's resources.

Pope Benedict spoke Nov. 16 during the opening session of the United
Nations' World Summit on Food Security.

The Nov. 16-18 conference, hosted by the U.N. Food and Agriculture
Organization in Rome, brought together leaders and delegates from countries
around the world to find concrete solutions to end the scourge of hunger and
malnutrition and find ways to stabilize food prices.

According to the FAO, more than 1 billion people are undernourished and one
child dies every six seconds because of malnutrition.

"Hunger is the most cruel and concrete sign of poverty," the pope said in
his address to summit leaders. "Opulence and waste are no longer acceptable
when the tragedy of hunger is assuming ever greater proportions."

"Norms, legislation, development plans and investments are not enough,
however; what is needed is a change in the lifestyles of individuals and
communities, in habits of consumption and in perceptions of what is
genuinely needed," Pope Benedict said.

The transcendental worth of every human being must be recognized if there is
to be "the conversion of heart that underpins the commitment to eradicate
deprivation, hunger and poverty in all their forms," he said.

The pope said the growing number of hungry people in the world is not
directly linked to an increase in world population.

There is enough food to feed the world, he said, adding that food shortages
are caused by the rising price of foodstuffs, "the reduction in economic
resources available to the poorest peoples and their limited access to
markets and to food."

"The lamentable destruction of foodstuffs for economic gain" is more proof
that "there is no cause-and-effect relationship between population growth
and hunger," he said.

Pope Benedict called for greater action in creating "a network of economic
institutions capable of guaranteeing regular access to sufficient food and
water."

Countries must "oppose those forms of aid that do grave damage to the
agricultural sector, those approaches to food production that are geared
solely towards consumption and lack a wider perspective, and especially
greed, which causes speculation to rear its head even in the marketing of
cereals, as if food were to be treated just like any other commodity," he
said.

Not enough is being done to lift people out of poverty because some people
exhibit "resigned regret, if not downright indifference" to the plight of
others and tend to believe hunger is just part and parcel of life in certain
countries, he said.

Everyone has a moral responsibility to show solidarity toward the rest of
the human family and concretely meet the needs of others "so as to favor the
genuine sharing of goods, founded on love."

The fundamental right to life depends on the right to sufficient, healthy
and nutritious food and safe drinking water, he said.

At the end of his address, the pope -- speaking in Arabic, Chinese, Russia,
English, French and Spanish -- thanked the FAO and its member states for
their efforts "to ensure that all people are given their daily bread."

what a bunch of hypocrites !

here's a bunch of money monger's who have more treasure stolen from countries throughout
the centuries through their persecutions; personal payments by the rich not to go to the
Catholic Inquisition's... not to mention Nazis plunder paid to them for helping the Nazis
escape Europe... and who can forget payment for services rendered such as forgiveness of
sins for money ?

the whore of Babylon can't share the gospel which is in words... and they're going to
share their gold ?

Why?
You don't really think the pope drives a ferrari or eats lobster every
night....

What stolen treasures?
You are just pissed because your mom left her money to
the church rather than waste it on her mongrel son.

The Roman Catholic Church provides the way, the truth, and the light.
They share it every day with you.
Although it seems like a lantern under a bushel basket for you.
You want to hide it, keep it to yourself, and/or share your bitterness with
the world.

I must have missed the part where it says where the Vatican is
implementing austerity measures to curb "opulence." The writing is
on the wall though - the popes chefs should start hunting for jobs.

The UN screwed up royally when they decided to let the Vatican pretend
they were a sovereign state.

So pope Rat, does this mean the gold brocade and silk vestments are a
thing of the past?

I agree. We just differ in our perception of what is genuinely needed
is all.

A cotton tee shirt is good enough. You don't need silk to impress the
rubes. Impress with your intellect, charisma and personality, and you
wouldn't need all the expensive traditional props.

Transcendental as in spook, spirit, mystical, worth of people, has
what to do with solving hunger problems?

Preemptive strike or justification against all other animals and
plants to stuff more human faces?

What a myopic dweeb! Deny the obvious so you can interject the
ridiculous.

He's got that right - there's plenty of food but people don't have
money to buy it, or transport it, or store it, or distribute it.

Does handing out food solve any problems, or just bypass the
unpleasant effects long enough to deal with the same problem again in
the future?

Destruction of foodstuffs for economic gain? Anyone know what he is
citing there?

Reiterating the concept that more people don't require more food.
Excellent! no food just makes them transcendental that much quicker .

Or maybe he's thinking loaves and fishes? Pray for food or pray for a
miracle; prayer works!

There you have it. The pope should decide what gets planted. Isn't
this what state run farms were all about in the USSR? That sure
provided a cornucopia for those poor folks.

"Resigned regret" seems to adequately describe the pope's position on
world hunger, his ranting notwithstanding.

Well I donno pope, your Excellency or holiness or whatever, it is just
possible that some areas of the planet are incapable of supporting the
populations living there.

>

That is a great sentiment. Now all we need do is remove the greed
gene from mankind. Likely as not, that's one of those things we need
to survive, but so what?

Right to life? Sounds like free food, water, shelter and then we can
sit around singing Kumbaya, while we die of boredom, oops PC: become
transcendental.

I'd like the right to a pope-free world.

Hey, the RCC only accepted you fags in the 1960's and 1970's as a noble
experiment. It didn't work. It has been attempting to clean house since
82.

The Vatican doesn't own the treasure. It belongs to people no longer alive. So
the treasures belong in a museum, where they are.

The Boston Globe came out with their expose in 2001 or so.
In 1982, Pope JP2 already started to clean house. He changed
procedures, seminary requirements, and wrote to his bishops.
The abuse peaked in the 60's and 70's. It took another 3 decades
before the world discovered the mess, and by then, the stink had
been removed without exposing innocent families, victims, and
poor decisions based on bad advice from leading shrinks of the day.

And still nothing was done. Nothing more than move the known perverts to
other churches. None were reported to the police and none were required to
seek professional therapy. Not that pedophilia is curable, but to teach them
how to control their warped deviant sexual passions for children. None were
removed to places where they had no access to children. No parents were
warned about pervert priests.

The stink had not been removed. There are new cases coming forward
constantly.

Now they're trying to blame the "shrinks?" Which shrinks are they trying to
put the blame on? They KNEW from the start that simply moving the perverts
to new churches with a warning wasn't working. They admitted this. They
KNEW moving them around didn't work, they knew it for years and did nothing.

I'm not the one trying to defend the sick warped depraved homosexual
pedophiles - YOU ARE!!!!!!!! It's full evidence and very obvious that
you're more dangerous to innocent children than they are. They admitted
their immoral twisted criminal acts whereas you try to hide and minimize
what what they did.

Of course something was done.
JP2 changed procedures, eminary requirements and wrote to his bishops.
The abuse peaked in the 1960's and 1970's.
There was less and less as the years rolled on.
Obviously something was done.

>N othing more than move the known perverts to other churches.

The known perverts were sent to treatment centers, counseling
centers, were sent to Rome for additional study, and were evaluated
by leading shrinks of the day. None were sent to another parish without
the "cure" performed by those shrinks. Obviously the "cure" didn't take on
all of these priests. Out of 4000 identified and treated, nearly 200
received the "cure" and were sent to other parishes where they abused again.

> None were reported to the police

This was not a requirment of the church to do so.
The victims should have reported the priests to the civil authorities.
The church does not do this.
The church is in the "forgiveness" business, not punishment.

> and none were required to seek professional therapy.

This is an outright lie.
Would you like a list of treatment centers set up by the church?

> Not that pedophilia is curable,

Ah, but the shrinks on retainer certainly adised the church
that they were. In the DSM, homosexuality was considered
a "disorder" that could be cured.

low profile is important, because most of the 70 residents are troubled
Roman Catholic priests, a quarter of them accused of molesting children.
Founded in 1981 by a priest-psychiatrist who later died of AIDS; St. Luke is
one of a handful of church-sponsored treatment programs across the country
that U.S. bishops have turned to for assistance in dealing with priests who
abuse children. In some instances, court records have revealed, priests
accused of abuse were sent periodically to these treatment centers and then
returned to ministry.

Still, in the admissions protocol for their program, Berlin and Money
guarantee those engaged in past, present or future child sexual abuse, "We
will not, however, report to your Probation Officer information you tell us
as a part of the normal doctor-patient privileged relationship." By 1988 "at
least eight men [were] convicted of sexually abusing Maryland children while
under treatment" at the Johns Hopkins clinic." supporting the Maryland
Attorney General's rejection of Dr. Berlin's effort to cover-up ongoing
child abuse. Moreover, Dr. Paul McHugh, as former Johns Hopkins director of
psychiatry and a member of the Baltimore Archdiocese's Independent Review
Board on Child Sexual Matters was fully supportive of Berlin's efforts to
protect even active pedophiles in treatment at Johns Hopkins.

As you may know, St Luke's is one of the primary Catholic treatment centers
for priests battling personal sexuality issues. It is disturbing, to say the
least, that the founder of the institution has such high praise and regard
for men such as Drs. Money and Berlin. In short, our Lord long ago warned of
wolves in sheep's clothing and, as detailed above, Kinseyan wolves have
provided guidance to the Church in therapeutically managing homosexual
priests. Since the 50s, the criminal justice system has adopted the same
Kinseyan view of sex offenders and therapeutic management as has the Church,
with the same disappointing and destructive results.

THE PSYCHIATRIST AS ACCOMPLICE

by

Thomas S. Szasz, M.D.
SPECIAL TO THE WASHINGTON TIMES

In the long history of priests sexually abusing children, perpetrators and
victims play the principal parts. However, there are two other important
players in this drama, only one of which - the priests' superiors, who
ignored and indeed facilitated the crimes of their subordinates - have
received attention.

But the identity, the very existence, of the other accomplices - the
psychiatrists and psychiatric institutions that "diagnose" and "treat"
priests who, in fact, are criminals - has been overlooked. Why? Because they
are an integral part of our love affair with medicalizing life and replacing
responsibility with "therapy."

The tragedy of pedophilia begins, as do many modern tragedies, by people
stupefying themselves by confusing their own tongue, re-enacting God's
punishment of mankind at Babel. An adult who uses a child for his sexual
gratification is a kind of rapist: He is guilty of the crime of assault.
Such a person is a criminal, not a patient.

How does medicine - talking about diseases and treatments - enter into this
affair? The same way it enters into our belief that other (mis)behaviors are
diseases, amenable to treatment - through psychiatry. It's a long story that
can be condensed into a few sentences. For millennia, masturbation,
homosexuality, and the many other non-heterosexual, non-procreative uses of
the genital organs were considered to be grievous sins and were prevented
and punished accordingly.

Toward the end of the 19th century, they started becoming "mental" diseases.
This process played an important part in the transformation of mad-doctoring
as quackery into modern psychiatry as a bona fide branch of medicine.

Creating diseases by coining disease-sounding terms was raised to the level
of a psychiatric art form by Baron Richard von Krafft-Ebing (1840-1902), a
German-born psychiatrist who was professor of psychiatry at the Universities
of Strasbourg, Graz and Vienna. The work that made Krafft-Ebing world famous
is "Psychopathia Sexualis,"the first edition of which appeared in 1886.
Sexology became an integral part of medicine - and the new science of
psychiatry - by physicians authoritatively renaming sexual sins "sexual
perversions" and declaring them to be "cerebral neuroses" (Krafft-Ebing).

Lawyers, politicians and the public embraced this transformation as the
progress of science, rather than dismissing it as medical megalomania based
on nothing more than the manipulation of language.

Yet, Krafft-Ebing himself acknowledged that what he was doing had nothing to
do with science. It had to with "compassion." He wrote: "The physician
finds, perhaps, a solace in the fact that he may at times refer those
manifestations which offend against our ethical and aesthetical principles
to a diseased condition of the mind or the body. ... He can save the honor
of humanity in the forum of morality, and the honor of the individual before
the judge and his fellow-men."

Sigmund Freud extended Krafft-Ebing's psychopathologizing from sexual
behavior to everyday behavior. In "The Psychopathology of Everyday Life"
(1901), he inverted William Shakespeare's humanistic interpretation of
conflict as an integral part of life into a dehumanized interpretation of
tragedy as a manifestation of psychopathology.

At the root of the confusion about pedophilia lies the term "sex crime."
Exemplified by rape, so-called sex crimes are particularly heinous types of
assault. But assaults that result in blinding the victim or rendering him
paraplegic are also heinous, but we do not, on that account, call them "eye
crimes" or "neurological crimes." The belief that sex crimes are "special"
paves the way for the delusion that they are diseases, a false belief
psychiatrists turn into "reality" by naming what were formerly perversions
"paraphilias" (homophilia, necrophilia, pedophilia, zoophilia).

This is factually erroneous and morally wicked, because sexually assaulting
a child is not a disease (just as homosexuality was never a disease), and
because viewing "pedophilia" as an illness, like pneumonia, implies that the
subject is not responsible for it and it is treatable. In turn, these
beliefs lead to excusing the behavior and engaging in a pseudomedical
charade of treating it. The result is that psychiatrists and psychiatric
institutions become accomplices to pedophilia, especially by priests.

According to press reports, "centers used by the Catholic Church today
include the Johns Hopkins clinic, the Institute of Living and the Menninger
Foundation in Topeka, Kans., according to those who treat pedophilic
priests. For the most part, the regimen for treating pedophilia involves
individual and group therapy to break down denial and a 12-step program,
similar to the Alcoholics Anonymous model, to help control sexual
addictions.

That is the psychiatrists' version of such programs. The clergy's version,
judging by their actions, is that such programs provide safe houses for
sexually misbehaving priests, where they can be hidden until they are
quietly reassigned to ply their trade elsewhere.

Fred Berlin, the founder of the Johns Hopkins Sexual Disorders Clinic, is
quoted as saying that pedophilic patients are closely monitored after being
discharged from a program. However, pedophilic priests are criminals who
should be imprisoned, not monitored by psychiatrists paid off for their
collusion by the Catholic Church.

I contend that psychiatrists - especially the authors of the influential
"Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder," published in
periodically revised editions by the American Psychiatric Association - are,
like the pedophile priests' superiors, accomplices to their crimes. Their
offense is classifying and treating pedophilia as a disease. In the absence
of that deception, tragedies such as the Catholic Church and the victims now
face could not come into being.

A Boston news Web site reported: "A.W. Richard Sipe, a psychotherapist and
former monk who counseled sexually disordered priests in the 1970s and 1980s
at the Seton Psychiatric Institute and the Johns Hopkins University Sexual
Disorders Clinic, recalls: 'Oh, Father [John] Geoghan. He is well known in
the circles of those who treat priest pedophiles. He is notorious because he
has been treated by so many people, at nearly every psychiatric hospital in
the country'" (http://www.bostonphoenix.com/
boston/news_features/top/features/documents/00882888.html).

Credo quia absurdum est.

> Which shrinks are they trying to put the blame on?

1. Summary of Survey Data.

Church records indicate that 4,392 priests were accused of
engaging in sexual abuse of a minor between 1950 and 2002. This number
represents four percent of the 109,694 priests in active ministry during
that time. There were approximately 10,667 reported minor victims of clergy
sexual abuse during this period, and the Church expended more than half a
billion dollars in dealing with the problem.

2. Data Relating to Accused Priests.

According to the survey data, four percent of priests who were in
ministry between 1950 and 2002 have been accused of an act of sexual abuse
of minors. The prevalence was highest among diocesan priests. There were
75,694 priests in diocesan ministry between 1950 and 2002. Of those priests,
allegations of sexual abuse of minors had been made against 3,265, or 4.3%.
By contrast, allegations of sexual abuse of minors had been made with regard
to approximately 2.7% of the approximately 34,000 religious order priests in
ministry during the time period. The remaining approximately 200 priests
alleged to have sexually abused a minor during this period were "extern"
priests; that is, priests resident in a diocese different from the diocese
in which they had been incardinated.

Although there has been a great deal of attention paid to certain cases in
which a priest who had been accused of molesting a minor took up residence
in another diocese, there appear in fact to have been relatively few such
incidents. According to the survey data, approximately 143 priests were
alleged to have engaged in sexual abuse of a minor in more than one diocese.

Just as no one factor "causes" a priest to molest a minor, no one cause is
responsible for the incidence of sexual abuse of minors by clergy generally.
The debate over what caused the current crisis often has given way to a
search for an easy answer that comports with the individual observer's
preconceived views. As one bishop commented to the Board, "If you're
conservative, homosexuality is the problem; if you're liberal, celibacy is
the problem. So you tell me who you are, and I'll tell you what the problem
is."

Whatever its inspired roots and tenable theories, Psychology's
bread and butter comes from its role as a professional witness. Federal
agencies, corporations, and desperate criminals all agree that the advent of
modern psychology is truly the most convenient device in recent centuries
for eliminating unsightly controversy when law collides with ethics or
common decency. Psychology provides a way for These people to say what's
wrong with Those people and, in case anyone is watching, to conjure
Scientific Evidence to bedazzle the faithful. Psychology is a miraculous
snake-oil that actually works. It works because most of us believe a
statement to be true if the statement is said by a "scientist", a
"researcher", or an "expert".

Science, however, finds Psychology to be a dubious colleague. This is
because Psychology is constantly lumbering around in the world with cockeyed
projects, such as this psychological study funded by NSF which came to the
brilliant conclusion that "The Sept. 11 attacks of 2001 left a lingering
psychological impact on the nation...." Such redundant theories upset the
tidy piles of credibility that Science has mustered through slow and
expensive experiments. By developing a taste for degrees, certificates,
credentials, and associations, Psychology has co-opted the fraternal
trappings of Science and thus firmly shares that same sliver of Authority
that the public has not yet allotted to clerks, presidents, and jailkeepers.
Thus, though both the zoologist and the Psychologist are popularly
considered Scientific Authorities, the zoologist will not be found on a hot
circuit of murder trials to discredit key witnesses, no matter how pertinent
his insights into the human animal. As the professional witness, it is the
Psychologist, not the zoologist, who must show up to court dates to dazzle
jurors, transform subjective psychological profiles into 'data', and
otherwise grift and grin for a variety of shifty outfits.

The US Government hires psychologists to administer a standardized test,
conduct an interview, and then use these materials to evaluate candidates.
This process is known as The Psyche Eval. If you've never been evaluated by
psychologists before, you may find yourself a little nervous. What will the
psychologist ask me in the interview? Should I tell the truth? What if I
fail? Big Dead Place does not presume to know the best course of action in
your particular case, but we can offer some general principles and insights
that might keep you from losing your mind during this stressful
interrogation.

Four out of five biologists regard psychologists as jibbering baboons, and
you should too. If other scientists had their way, Psychology would not be
considered a "science" at all, but would be ranked somewhere above
Creationism and below Performance Art. In fact, those who receive
undergraduate degrees in Psychology but decide not to pursue graduate
programs in that field often fall back on careers in Human Resources. But
because the psychologist is in a position to terminate your contract on a
whim, it may be in your favor to temporarily imagine the psychologist not as
a glorified HR clerk, but as a respected authority with legitimate
expertise. Such ideas can always be discarded after the interview.

Beyond technique, psychology is bunk. Freud was wrong. Worse, his therapy is
ineffective, it shows less than 25% success rate. Would you go to a surgeon
with that kind of record? Jung is interesting, without a scientific basis
and culture- centric. Jungian theory is relgion masquerading as science. The
procession of therapists and theorists with the "answer" to the human
condition continues parallel to the parade of philosphers.

This is not what was on TV, in the papers or online. Even my Aunt's priest
didn't make such claims, admitting the Bishops and other higher ups knew
what was going on and did little more than warn the perverts, then ship them
off to another church.

them and not just in America.

No, but a close family member was. Also, the information is all over the
net. Just Google and you'll find plenty to read on the subject.

> Do you feel you can speak for them and their advice?

Can you? You are in this post. Do you realize the info is everywhere and has
been for many years?

And they started committing the pervert priests *when?* What years? And if
they were all committed for treatment, why were so many known cases simply
moved to other churches where they continued to abuse children?

So the Archdiocese's Independent Review Board on Child Sexual Matters
supported the protection of the perverts. You see nothing wrong with that?

Which depraved homosexual do you feel that Duke is defending?

Who admitted immoral twisted criminal acts?

As for minimizing what they did, how dare you attempt to make
a mountain out of a molehill?
Clerical child abuse is NUTHIN compared to the abuse children receive.
A study estimated that among the sexually exploited children in the United
States, 121,911 ran away from home; 6,793 fled mental hospitals, foster
homes or other institutions; and 51,602 were thrown out of their home by a
parent or guardian. It said that about 11,500 were foreign-born children who
came into the United States either legally or illegally.

>The study found that 47 percent of sexual assaults on children were
>committed by relatives; 49 percent by acquaintances, such as a teacher, a
>coach or a neighbor; and only 4 percent by strangers. The researchers also
>reported that about 20 percent of sexually exploited children who were
>interviewed were involved in prostitution rings that worked across state
>lines.

The study, to be released on Monday by researchers at the University of
Pennsylvania, relied on interviews with victims, child welfare workers and
law enforcement officials in 28 cities in United States, Mexico and Canada
from January 1999 through last March.

It also relied on the latest public and private estimates on the number of
runaway and homeless youths in the three countries and on estimates by law
enforcement officials and child welfare authorities of the number of these
children sexually exploited.

The study estimated that in the United States 325,000 children a year were
subjected to sexual exploitation, including prostitution, use in pornography
and molestation. The study's authors said the number of abused children was
much higher than was previously thought.

You whine about 4000 kids who were molested by Catholic priests between

1950 and 2000. That is less than 100 a year.

Who is going to worry about the other 324,900 kids each year abused?

Shaddup, you whiner.

one of a handful of church-sponsored treatment programs across the country

Still, in the admissions protocol for their program, Berlin and Money

Attorney General's rejection of Dr. Berlin's effort to cover-up ongoing

protect even active pedophiles in treatment at Johns Hopkins.

As you may know, St Luke's is one of the primary Catholic treatment centers

for priests battling personal sexuality issues. It is disturbing, to say the
least, that the founder of the institution has such high praise and regard
for men such as Drs. Money and Berlin. In short, our Lord long ago warned of
wolves in sheep's clothing and, as detailed above, Kinseyan wolves have
provided guidance to the Church in therapeutically managing homosexual
priests. Since the 50s, the criminal justice system has adopted the same
Kinseyan view of sex offenders and therapeutic management as has the Church,
with the same disappointing and destructive results.

players in this drama, only one of which - the priests' superiors, who
ignored and indeed facilitated the crimes of their subordinates - have
received attention.

But the identity, the very existence, of the other accomplices - the

Paquette was a master homo pedo evil man.
If the bishops had known more about him, they
would have executed him. This punk was pure evil.

II. SUMMARY

The Review Board believes that the overwhelming majority of priests
serving the Church in the United States fulfill their roles honorably and
chastely. According to Church records, however, there were credible
allegations that several thousand priests, comprising four percent of
priests in ministry over the last half-century, committed acts of sexual
abuse of minors. There appears to have been a significant surge in acts of
abuse beginning in the 1960s and continuing into the mid-1980s.

Article Date: 13 Oct 2006 -

For the first time, a major outcome study has shown that a high percentage
of patients with Borderline Personality Disorder can achieve full recovery
across the complete range of symptoms. The controlled study, appearing in a
recent issue of the Archives of General Psychiatry published by the American
Medical Association, shows that a new approach -- Schema Therapy -- is more
than twice as effective as a widely practiced psychodynamic approach,
Transference Focused Psychotherapy (TFP). Schema Therapy was also found to
be less costly and to have a much lower drop out rate. Borderline
Personality Disorder (BPD) has until recent years been considered
untreatable, with little scientific justification for longer-term therapy.
This study demonstrates that schema therapy leads to complete recovery in
about 50% of the patients, and to significant improvement in two-thirds.

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/medicalnews.php?newsid=53869

Patients treated by means of psychoanalysis improve to the extent of 44 per
cent; patients treated eclectically improve to the extent of 64 per cent;
patients treated only custodially or by general practitioners improve to the
extent of 72 per cent. There thus appears to be an inverse correlation
between recovery and psychotherapy; the more psychotherapy, the smaller the
recovery rate.

In general, certain conclusions are possible from these data. They fail to
prove that psychotherapy, Freudian or otherwise, facilitates the recovery of
neurotic patients. They show that roughly two-thirds of a group of neurotic
patients will recover or improve to a marked extent within about two years
of the onset of their illness, whether they are treated by means of
psychotherapy or not. This figure appears to be remarkably stable from one
investigation to another, regardless of type of patient treated, standard of
recovery employed, or method of [p. 323] therapy used. From the point of
view of the neurotic, these figures are encouraging; from the point of view
of the psychotherapist, they can hardly be called very favorable to his
claims.

The sad result is that society's engine of legal and social authority is

million US Army draftees. His questionable conclusions were to have
far-reaching consequences, leading to a 1924 law placing severe limitations
on the immigration of those groups Yerkes and his followers believed to be
mentally unfit - Jews and Eastern Europeans in particular. Yerkes later
thoroughly recanted his methods and findings in an 800-page confession/tome
that few bothered to read, and the policies he set in motion had the
dreadful side effect of preventing the immigration of Jews trying to escape
the predations of Hitler and his henchmen later on.

The original test results happened to dovetail with Yerkes' explicit eugenic
beliefs, a fact lost on nearly everyone at the time.

In an effort to answer the question of whether intelligence is primarily
governed by environment or genes, psychologist Sir Cyril Burt (1883-1971)
performed a long-term study of twins that was later shown to be most likely
a case of conscious or unconscious scientific fraud. His work, which
purported to show that IQ is largely inherited, was used as a "scientific"
basis by various racists and others, and, despite having been discredited,
still is.

These are just two figures in a long list of people who have tried to use
psychology to give a scientific patina to their personal beliefs, perhaps
beginning with Francis Galton (1822-1911), the founder and namer of
eugenics, one who tried (and failed) to design psychological tests meant to
prove his beliefs. This practice of using psychology as a personal soapbox
continues to the present, in fact, it seems to have become more popular.

What these accounts have in common is that no one was able (or willing) to
use scientific standards of evidence to refute the claims at the time of
their appearance, because psychology is only apparently a science. Only
through enormous efforts and patience, including sometimes repeating an
entire study using the original materials (as in Steven Jay Gould
replicating Morton's flawed craniometry work), can a rare, specific
psychological claim be refuted. Such exceptions aside, there is ordinarily
no recourse to the "testable, falsifiable claims" criterion that sets
science apart from ordinary human behavior.

One might think that psychology might have learned from its past errors and
evolved into a more strict and scientific enterprise. In fact the reverse
seems to be the case. Here are two contemporary examples:

Facilitated Communication

This bogus field sprang into existence, fueled by the wish that specific
disabled (autistic, severely retarded) people might be able to communicate
with their loved ones after all. It purports to allow communication with a
disabled person through the agency of a facilitator, someone who typically
holds a writing implement (or operates a keyboard) simultaneously with the
disabled person, and the two together create a written account of the
disabled person's otherwise inaccessible experiences. Frequently, the
"communication" seems to reveal that the disabled person is being abused
horribly by parents or caretakers. This in turn has resulted in bogus legal
actions, spurred by prosecutors who think psychology is a science.

Was this set of beliefs tested and shown to be flawed in a scientific study?
No. Was it called into question because of the utterly fantastic content of
the "communications"? No again. How then was the fraud uncovered? Well, the
PBS television program "Frontline" showed up and taped some typical clinical
practice, revealing some aspects of the practice anyone not brain-damaged
should have been able to notice, such as the fact that the disabled person
was often looking at the ceiling while supposedly cooperating in keyboard
communication, a behavior that requires one to look at the keyboard at least
occasionally. The facilitator, of course, was looking intently at the
keyboard.

And finally, after evidence of the bogus nature of both the practice and the
communications was demonstrated, was the field abandoned? Of course not - it
is still widely practiced, with the difference that TV cameras are now
typically excluded from the clinics.

Repressed Memory Therapy

In this variation on the above bogus practice, talk-therapy clients are
guided to "recovering" repressed memories, typically of horrible childhood
abuse, sexual and otherwise. And, like the above practice, these "recovered
memories" sometimes cause people to be jailed for vivid, if imaginary,
crimes.

In this case, unlike the above, over time the frequency and implausibility
of the actionable claims ruined everything for the eager practitioners, and
some clients later decided they were talked into the "memories" by the
practitioner. There have been a number of lawsuits by disgruntled former
clients, and wrongly convicted people have been freed.

But, just as in the case of "facilitated communication," science played no
role in either the creation or destruction of this aberration, this fad.
Science played no part in the creation of either field, although properly
designed experiments could have been used at the outset to prove that both
fads were not remotely what their advocates claimed. And science had little
role to play in the later debunking, because psychology is only
coincidentally addressed by science.

Some may object that the revolution produced by psychoactive drugs has
finally placed psychology on a firm scientific footing, but the application
of these drugs is not psychology, it is pharmacology. The efficacy of drugs
in treating conditions once thought to be psychological in origin simply
presents another example where psychology got it wrong, and the errors could
only be uncovered using disciplines outside psychology. To summarize this
section, psychology is the sort of field that can describe things, but as
shown above, it cannot reliably explain what it has described. In science,
descriptions are only a first step - explanations are essential:

An explanation, a theory, allows one to make a prediction about
observations not yet made.

A prediction would permit a laboratory test that might support or
falsify the underlying theory.

The possibility of falsification is what distinguishes science
from cocktail chatter.

This doesn't mean psychology lacks theories. It means the theories, when
applied to humans, either cannot be tested in a scientifically rigorous way,
or the tests fail without anyone noticing or caring. This explains why
psychology's frequent theoretical failures tend to be discussed in a
courtroom rather than a laboratory or a scientific journal.

As with most professions, scientists have a private language, using terms
that seem completely ordinary but that convey special meaning to other
scientists. For example, when a scientist identifies a field as a
"descriptive science," he is politely saying it is not a science.
