One thing I didn't mention was that I voluntarily went to my family Dr. for
help.
You CAN do it, if you want to, the first couple days are a real bitch. I was
getting up in the morning blaming the shakes on too much caffeine, switched
to decaf, it didn't help. The only thing that made me feel "Normal" was
getting in the car and sucking up more vodka. I was doing a quart plus
during the work day.
I guess that's what we all refer to as a functional drunk or user.
My Dr. put me on Valium and after three days of that I went into the
hospital for a couple of days for full time monitoring.
Believe it or not, alcohol withdrawal is the only one that can be fatal, the
others just make you feel like you're going to die.
There are some meds that help with the withdrawal symptoms from alcohol,
opiates and barbiturates, they're not magic , but they do help. I'm two
weeks out from my last drink and don't really have any desire to resume.
It seems to be true that you can't come up until you've really hit your
bottom.
